So, late last week I made a sort of half-ass case for keeping Darius Miles . I knew even as I posted it that things looked grim, but I was hoping that the old Darius would show up, and soon. It didn’t happen and today he got the axe.
It makes sense from the Celtics perspective because he was the only one without a guaranteed contract and Bill Walker (particularly) and JR Giddens have shown flashes of being useful NBA players sooner rather than later. Gabe Pruitt, obviously, showed what he can do if called upon, and there’s something comforting about keeping Sam Cassell around in case of an emergency.
In theory, Miles could have been the long, rangy, athletic guy that could come in for 12 minutes a night or so, and cause some problems in the passing lanes. The problem was I kept viewing Miles through the lens of the player he was supposed to be, rather than the guy that he is now.
That may as well be the chiseled in stone on his scouting report because Miles himself seemed to think that at any minute he would become a primary option for the Celtics, and that just wasn’t going to happen.
In the end it was worth the investment. You never say no to taking a relatively free chance on talent. So, with a week to go before the start of the season we know who the 2008-09 Celtics are going to be and we also know the answer to the question: Who will replace James Posey? No one.
The Celtics bench will be a much different beast than last year’s version. Jessica will have more on that this week.
