| Doc: ‘I think No. 6 should be retired’ | 11.13.09 at 7:57 pm ET |
Going into Friday’s game against Atlanta, Doc Rivers had lots on his mind. Namely, Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Al Horford and the very young and talented Hawks.
One thing NOT on his mind is whether the No. 23 should be retired throughout the NBA, as suggested by superstar LeBron James.
“I don’t know if there’s a right answer on that,” Rivers said. “Something I’ve been asked far more than I’d like to be asked, going into a game. He said he was going to wear No. 6. That number should be retired. I don’t know what the right answer to that question is. I think it’s good either way.”
James offered to give up his No. 23 and wear his Olympic No. 6 instead. Then, Rivers had some fun with reporters pregame Friday.
“You know who No. 6 is, right?” Rivers said, referring to Bill Russell.

Bill Russell to me is the greatest player to ever play basketball. He has rings from when he played and from when he coached. Just because Jordan got super rich off everybody buying his shoes, winning 2 dunk contest, and getting 6 rings he is the greatest off oall time. Come on! If it wasn’t for Bill Russell playing and what he had to go through during the civil rights moment it wouldnt be a Michael Jordan.

I agree with Doc Rivers! These young hip hop fans & kids need to learn the history of the NBA. There was an NBA before Jordan. By what standard do they base Jordan as the greatest player of all-time? Championships? Are they kidding? [Bill Russel]!! Dunking? Are they kidding? Check out films on Connie “Hawk” - Doc J, Nik!!! The game was changed for Jordan’s [the Jordan Rule]and the league’s benefits–to sell tickets and marketing. This is a perspective from a black man’s view. I have followed this league since 1959.
