UPDATE (12:48 P.M.): ESPN’S Chris Sheridan is reporting that the teams have a tentative agreement that will send Eddie House, Bill Walker and J.R. Giddens to New York for Nate Robinson and an unidentified second player. It’s likely that that the other player is coming from somewhere other than New York, since none of the other Knicks make the salary cap math work.

The Knicks have been engaged with the Rockets, and now the Kings, on a deal for Tracy McGrady. Keep an eye on those two teams as the afternoon progresses toward the 3 p.m. deadline.

****

The Celtics want Nate Robinson. The Knicks want Eddie House. That’s the easy part.

House told reporters in Los Angeles, where the Celtics are getting ready to play the Lakers Thursday, that he expects to be traded before Thursday’s 3 p.m. deadline. Robinson also reportedly cleaned out his locker in New York and was scratched from the Knicks game against the Bulls with what the team said was the flu.

The Celtics have targeted Robinson for a month and House has a relationship with Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni going back to their days together in Phoenix. And yet, it’s still not done.

The problem, as it’s been from the start, is that Robinson’s contract status as a base year compensation player makes him difficult to trade. The Knicks won’t take back anything for Robinson other than expiring contracts and while the Celtics have many players who fit that bill, none of them make the math work in a straight-up trade.

The Celtics can’t trade House straight-up for Robinson. They can’t trade Tony Allen or Brian Scalabrine straight-up for him. Draft picks won’t help either. That leaves them with two options.

They can start to assemble a deal with multiple players involved — and reports have had everyone from J.R. Giddens to Bill Walker in the mix. Or, they can try to find a third team to bring into it who would then absorb some of the salaries. To date, no third team has been identified.

It’s also worth noting that the Knicks are at the 15-player maximum, which doesn’t leave them with a lot of wiggle room. The Celtics have had an open roster spot since the release of Lester Hudson. In other words, the Knicks can’t take back more players than they trade. (Minor update to this: The Knicks worked out a trade that sent Darko Milicic to Minnesota for Brian Cardinal and they are expected to waive Cardinal, which would free up a roster spot).

There is every reason to believe that the Celtics will wind up with Robinson in their backcourt. It’s just not clear how yet.

Not a bad idea while the Cavs are picking up all stars we are getting a 5’9 bench player. We need a BIG player to play with the Cavs. Maybe Igoudala??

  • Joe

Big guys, how many do we need, Rasheed, Perkins, Davis, and maybe garnett as a tall foward. They need a guy who plays defense, offense, and sparks up the team. This guy is it. Even if he is 5’9″, I saw a clip of him stuffing Shaq. This kid needs Boston and we need him. Plus he is young.

I like the deal, but i also feel there still needs to be another. The team has really shown the there age recently, and only seem to be able to play three quarters. Id like to see them get an Iggoudala, Loul Deng, or Monta Ellis for Ray Allen.

If we know anything bout nate is he cant shoot and he’s destructive in the locker room, he’s had several incidents in his years in new york, do we really need a guy whos more interested in slam dunks as a part of this championship run, i agree with Jerry another big is perfect but A.Ig. has a huge contract and is another pierce. The only good thing about nate is that Tommy Heinsohn absolutely hates him and i love watching tommy change his tune when these jerks put on his beloved green.

I stayed with this team through an 18 win season but if they trade Eddie House for this POS, I’m out. I don’t get this move at all.

To all the misinformed and ignorant fans out there, Robinson may not rival the Jamison deal but he is a “HUGE” upgrade over House. The numbers don’t lie fans, just check ‘em out. The biggest misconception is Robinson can’t shoot. Here’s the proof…… FG% Rob: .452% House: .401 Hello ??? So your worried about the 3 pt %…Rob; .375% House: .383…..Virtually equal !!! PPG Rob: 13.2 House: 7.2……Are you kidding me ? The guy scored 41 in a half for crying out loud. He also averages 2.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists in only 26 minutes a game so he’s not a selfish player.Obviously, his attitude is the only obstacle but do you really think KG,Ray,Paul,Perk, etc. will allow that to be an issue. Great move without question. He’s not Marbury boys and girls.

  • Tim

Thank you Steve….perfectly said, i could have done better. All i have to add is that he can actually play D…WOW what a concept. And to the Jamison deal to the Cavs….not that great they got a guy who’s in his mid thirties and on his way out. Worse comes to worse next year for the celts at least they will have a backcourt of rondo and robinson ….better sounding then rondo and house!

  • Ryan G

I agree with steve also, we need a scorer off the bench. I love eddie but when he is cold, he is ice cold. we need someone consident in there to spark the bench and be able to drive and score. Plus he can dribble which house struggles at with pressure. I never was a huge fan of this guy but i think he might be the answer to the C’s second half struggles. If the team can handle that moron starbury we can handle this guy. Great move, now all we need is ray allen to retire and wade to replace him…

  • Jack

I don’t know if this is the right move, but the team as it was can’t win another title. They had to do something. He does seem to be a sparkplug and they certainly need one in the 4th quarter.
