Pierce to LA fans: ‘We ain’t coming back’ 06.07.10 at 6:35 am ET
By

Lakers center Pau Gasol made some comments about Kevin Garnett over the weekend that some people tried to turn into inspiration for the Celtics. Now it’s Paul Pierce‘s turn for some locker room bulletin board material. During the closing seconds of the C’s Game 2 win Sunday night, as Pierce helped up teammate Kendrick Perkins, he appeared to say, “We ain’t coming back [to LA].” If the Celtics were to win (or, for that matter, lose) the next three games in Boston, the series would be over without the Lakers hosting another game.

It should be noted that after Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals in Orlando, Pierce made a similar proclamation, saying “See y’all next year,” as he walked to the locker room, after an interview with ESPN sideline reporter Doris Burke in which he said, “We’re coming home to close it out.” That proved to be inaccurate, as the Magic pushed the series to six games.

Here’s the clip of the Sunday night comment, which became a hot topic overnight on message boards across the country.

    this isnt newsworthy.

  • http://weei billjay

Has anyone given Ray Allen a nick name? I have one; SILK!

  • SilentSteph

Words for Inspiration none the less it is good to have those words to speak

  • the-facts

paul pierce needs to shut the hell up. all he does is talk trash. as a celtics fan i’m very disappointed in him. he did in the last series against the magic, now his doing it in the final. just keep your damn mouth shut man. why can’t you just be humble. ray allen would never say something stupid like that. i hope doc and ainge talk to pierce about keep his mouth shut for the rest of this final.

  • Joe

@the-facts, maybe you need to get your facts straight. talk to anyone who follow the celtics closely and they will tell you that the entire team is known for running their mouths so lets not get on Paul Pierce or any of the Celtics for that matter. i personally dont care what they say so long as they play tough and win games. this is really not a story anyway.

  • CeltsWatcher

    the-facts,

Whatz you so scared about? Hyped-up talk is the way players amp up the energy and keep themselves in the “zone”. What, you don’t think the Celts can do it? Don’t doubt it for a moment – you gotta believe, man!

  • http://WEEI CelticFan

Funny, THE-FACTS must be a youngin cause Larry Bird was the biggest trash talker/toungue in cheek commenter of the 1980′s Celtic teams and throughout his career, especially on the court where this latest PP quote was overheard and run with by a media who acts like a dog chasing a steak on a stick. Rather than do some real sports reporting, the media runs with this chit. Today’s media is absolutely pathetic.

Think about it. Pierce is no different then Bird of 30 years ago, nor should he be treated or villified as such. The way today’s media reports, hopefully we’ll start to see certain media members or agencies boycotted by players, teams, organiations and leagues in the future. The fans again will be the ones paying the price but if this is the balogna they’re going to report on….I’m all for it!

PS: I couldn’t agree more than Boris….totally not newsworthy! Especially when the comment was not made to the media, to Laker players or their management. It was made to perhaps a fellow teamate but more likely aloud for the nearby fans to hear! I’ve seen Reggie Miller play with fans and say stuff (re. Spike Lee), and it goes on and on. PP’s comment was not meant for the media but to the fairweather fans Pierce was assuredly getting lip service from standing approximately 3 feet away. The fact is, these media whores would have their microphones and reporters up players a.s.s.e.s. if they could and this is what we’ll continue to get until players and teams do something about this bogus media crap in the future!

And as for the sites and writers in media across the country as well as WEEI reporting on this……one word….PATHETIC!

  • http://weei Stan

Silk is already used by Jamal Wilkins of the 74-81 Lakers keep tryin, we don’t want a laker name for a Celtic great

  • cutler

Paul is a former finals MVP. He can say whatever the hell he wants. Besides, it looks like from the video he is just talking smack with some drunk, rich, non-sports Lakers fan in the front row. Funny how those criticizing Paul for talking smack are talking smack. If you wouldn’t say it to Paul’s face then shut-it.

  • ADR ’77

Doesn’t any one remember ‘Moses Malone Eats Sh*t’

Or how about ‘Cleveland fans – you don’t want me on that floor’ spoken by Larry during his rehab phase of his Dual Achilles blowout just before he commenced to limp into the Cleveland Arena and single-handedly sweep the pathetic Cavs and their fans out of existence…on two bad wheels no less!

Basketball is all about confidence, and forcing your opponent into submission by any means, including intimidation w/ words, actions or both…and then backing it up w/ results – it just happens that only a very rare few can get away with it…let alone even dare to try it…

If you don’t think so – give it a try sometime w/ your buddies – playing golf, poker or anything else you can think of – and see how it works out for ya…then try to imagine doing it on a global scale, in front of millions, microphones in your face and the world documenting every word…then if somehow you happen to pull it all off you might get a hint of what it feels like to walk in these guys’ shoes…

    Until then just enjoy….

  • DEVIL8121

(BILLJAY) anyone who has listened to a Celtics game on the radio knows Allens nickname is “sugar ray” all you can say is sweet when he goes on a run like last nights…

  • PKM

The media is so lazy about going out and getting a real story that they report this chit. Come on guys!! With the game that Ray Allen, Big Baby, Rajon had last night this is all you can come up with??? Pathetic.

Make no mistake: Boston and Celtics fans are real jerks. There’s a reason they call people from Massachusetts Massholes. I lived there. So much hate. So much anger. They hate the Lakers and we need to understand that. Shannon, for God’s sake, get some anger and fight back.

  • http://www.rsp.com sarah smith

Funny how Boston thinks they are a big city that can compete with New York and L.A.. Just a little podunk town with angry folks who want to prove to the world they matter. Really sad. The Celts play that way too. Trying to prove they matter, but they really don’t.

  • The truth

“the-facts” must be a little lack of confidence girl as Pierce can say, “I will dunk on Kobe” if he wants because he has that confidence and that’s what makes him different. Please, whoever mentions the Orlando series needs to can it- that was blatantly a fixed last 2 games won by Orlando. What coach doesn’t take a timeout in a tied game 4? How was Perkins honestly kicked out before the half? A means of revenue for the league, Pierce can say all he wants but in the end its David Stern who will make the last call.

  • Pete

Is it just me or did anyone else notice that Perk was on the floor because he had taken a hard foul that included a slight slap to the face at the end. As it happened I immediately thought Gasol was trying to bait Perk into retaliating and thus picking up that 8th tech and a suspension for game 3. I thought Pierce recognized it and was in his own way applauding Perk for being smart enough not to take the bait, as well as trash talking to Gasol as his way of retaliating.

  • Pete

Hey Sarah, yeah the C3eltics are irrelevant LOL. Check this out. The Network keeps pointing out that between the Celtics (17) & Lakers (15) they have won half the titles in NBA history. But here’s what they keep leaving out. The Lakers are 15 & 15 in Finals series for a .500 winning percentage whereas the Celtics are 17 & 3 for a .850 winning percentage.

By the way, rest assured that in the Celtics locker room they firmly believe that if Kevin Garnett had not missed last years playoffs with the knee injury they would be playing for a Third straight title right now. Doc Rivers even said it after the Orlando series, this starting 5 is 7 & 0 in playoff series!

  • Jim

That’s exactly what Clyde Drexler said in ’89 when Portland split at Detroit. Turns out he was right, because the Pistons swept all three at Portland.

  • Dave

Hey Stan, Jamaal Wilkes was a hell of a shooter. Not sure who Jamal Wilkins is and I follow basketball pretty closely. So before you spout off about Laker legends make sure you know what you’re talking about, okay?

  • Joe

sarah smith criticizes the city and people of Boston for having so much ‘hate and so much anger’ with a post that is filled with hate and anger (and jealousy). sarah smith = dumb

  • howie

on mike & mike this morning jalen rose said he was in close proximity to the whole thing & said PP was saying that to fans sitting there who had been calling him paula pierce all game….leave it to the media to leave out just a bit of info to incite fans

  • Joe

Hey sarah the Celtics have more titles than LA,11 in 13 years. How dare you call boston a city that dosn’t matter. If it wasn’t for Boston we would all be watching Cricket!!

  • Jon M

Hmm, so according to Sarah, New York and LA are the only cities that matter? Are you fond of making enemies with Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, San Francisco, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Miami, Denver, Seattle, Portland, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Orlando, New Orleans, St. Louis, Kansas City, etc., etc.? How about New York and LA can form their own little sports leagues, and the rest of the cities can keep the existing sports leagues, and see which leagues do better?

  • Jon M

Yes, on the floor, the Celtics trash talk more than the average team, but there are trash talkers on every NBA team. A better question is, do they trash talk in interviews? Pierce doesn’t, and I don’t recall any Celtics trash talking in the media in recent years. The media should stick to what’s said in interviews and press conferences, and not take seriously anything said between players on the floor. It’s a different domain.

  • Vin

Paul Pierce is shooting under 30% for the series. He isnt contributing. Did someone compare him to Larry Legend b/c Larry trashed talked? Are you kidding me? When Pierce actually shows up to play then he can talk. until then, keep his overrated pie hole shut. just one man’s opinion.
