5 Things that Went Wrong in Game 7 06.18.10 at 12:07 am ET
By

The Celtics lost Game 7 of the NBA Finals to the Lakers in Los Angeles on Thursday night, 83-79, falling short of their 18th championship. Here are five things that went wrong in the deciding game. (Click here for a recap of the Celtics’ loss.)

1. The Celtics gave it away - The Celtics were in control. They had the momentum and the confidence to get it done … before they let it all slip away. The Celtics led by 10 with seven minutes to go in the third quarter and had taken away the Lakers biggest weapon. But they began to miss shots and the Lakers were there to grab the rebounds. The C’s scored just three points in the final four minutes of the quarter and only led by four going into the final 12 minutes. The Lakers immediately got within two points seconds into the fourth, while the Celtics did not score for nearly three minutes. Bryant made three free throws to cut the Celtics advantage to one, and banked another two minutes later to give the Lakers the lead. Bryant scored four consecutive points to pull the Lakers ahead by four with 5:22 left, and they never looked back. The Celtics played catch up for the rest of the game as Bryant, Ron Artest, and Pau Gasol made critical baskets.

2. Kobe Bryant - The Celtics have battled past superstars the entire postseason, each time prevailing with team basketball. But after defeating Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Dwight Howard, they could not overcome the individual performance of Kobe Bryant. The Celtics held Bryant to just eight points (3-14 FG) in 22 minutes in the first half. When Bryant began to find his rhythm, though, the C’s failed to find an answer. Bryant scored 15 points in the second half, including four straight to tie the game and give the Lakers the lead with less than six minutes left. He finished the night with 23 points. It wasn’t his best offensive performance, but he made the shots when it counted.

3. Rebounding – The Celtics have said the entire series that the team that wins the rebounding war wins the game. On Thursday, they won neither. The Lakers outrebounded the Celtics, 53-40, including 23 offensive boards. This can’t be pinned on the injury of Kendrick Perkins, either. He alone doesn’t account for a 13-rebound differential. The Celtics had players capable of rebounding, but in the end, Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant combined for 33 boards while only Paul Pierce rebounded in double-digits for the C’s. Kevin Garnett, who the Celtics desperately needed defensively, grabbed just three rebounds.

4. Ray Allen - His monumental 3-point performance is all but forgotten after Ray Allen’s offensive struggles continued through Game 7. Allen shot just 3-for-14 from the field and scored 13 points. While he deserves credit for playing tough D on Bryant, his lack of production at the basket hurt the Celtics in a situation where they needed everyone scoring at full potential.

5. They Played Lakers Ball - The Celtics dominated the first half by feeding off their fundamentals of tough defense and team basketball. In the second half, however, it became showtime for Bryant and the Lakers. The Celtics failed to put together productive offensive possessions, rushed shots, and attempted forced baskets. In the end, they were forced to put the Lakers at the line, where they were outscored 25-15. They C’s began the season by beating the Cavaliers in Cleveland with Celtics basketball, and ended it by losing to the Lakers in Los Angeles by falling victim to their opponent’s game.

    WHAT AN IDIOT;
THE ONLY REASON WAS THE REFS 37-17 FREE THROW ADVANTAGE, AND SECONDLY MISSING PERKINS WAS DEVASTATING IN BEING OUT REBOUNDED SO IMMMENSELY

  • http://www.glidebikes.com Glide Bikes

The officials stopped the Celtics when they drove the Lakers fouled but no calls on the other end their giving Ray Allen a cheap foul on Kobe’s 3 pointer. They took them out of their flow and could not get in the paint without getting hacked. I was way to biased and very apparent who they wanted to win. Celts gave it their best shot but its hard to beat the refs

  • Dean

Ya, stuff went wrong. But raise your hand if you thought the Celts would be in the finals and Game 7 to boot.

The loss hurts but there is a lot to be proud.

To Doc and the team, thanks for the great season. You boys are still the champs.

    Go Celts Go

  • http://Bostonchannel.com Bruce

Hi, the celtics didn’t stand a chance in the game. They weren’t just playing against the lakers, they were also battling the ref’s. The celtics could have hit every shot and the Fakers still would have won. Look at the FT discrepancy. It’s sad when the ref’s decide the game and not the players. And as far as Kobe is concerned he’s a jerk and an adulterer the lakers did not deserve to win. There should be an asterisk beside this years champion. Go Celtics you’re the real winners.

  • JC

Celtics get called for a lot of fouls because that’s their game, they tend to foul a lot and play aggressively. The minute the Lakers started scoring points and closing the gap, they panicked and started playing TOO aggressively.

Blaming the refs is a lame scape-goat and takes away from the fact both teams played great defense this game, but the Celtics choked away the game by falling into the trap of playing the game how the Lakers wanted to play the game.

MAN THER REFS SCREWED US FANS AGAIN!!! TOOK OU TTHE CELTICFLOW! LIKEDONA HUE SAYS FIXED! FIXED! FIXED!!!!

  • Sha

20 EXTRA FREE THROWS…ENOUGH SAID!!! RIDICULOUS IN A GAME 7. Will anyone ever step up

  • http://jimheo9a@gmail.com jim

The fix was in as they were afraid of major riots in LA if they lost game & the refs followed the script by putting the C’s in foul trouble before halfway point of 4th qtr. while the Lakers had a foul to give in the last minute yet both teams played the same hit, clutch & grab ball throughout the game. If Rasheed does retire I expect him to file a multimillion dollar lawsuit against the NBA & their Referees for the bets on techs.

  • LakerFan

Stop whining about all these excuses your sorry celtics lost! Plain and simple They SUCK! GOOOO LAKERS!!!! Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha, LOSERS!!!

  • LakeShow

WOW Celtics do Suck Bad!!! boston sucks! boston sucks!
i love how peirce makes excuses about what they should of done to stop the Lakers, Shut the hell up!! LOSER!!

  • Bear

Hey LakerFan, you didn’t win crap. A fix was in, that’s all. You know it, everyone knows it. Why do you think the NBA is a joke to the rest of the sporting world? The National Bastard Association wouldn’t allow a rapist like Kobe Bryant to lose on his home court now would they? This whole series was fixed, you tool!

  • Charles

The refs gave the Lakers 25 FT’s in the fourth Quarter and they called absolutely nothing on the Lakers hacking and slashing every player they could I had Gashole with no less than 10 over the back calls and he wasn’t hit with one! the handcheck is illegal in the NBA but not when your name is ron artest or Kobe Rapist. I won’t watch next season because all the Lakers have to do to win is make sure Joey Crawfish shows up in three of the games and have home court advantage! I guarentee you if this game were played in Boston and Joey Crawfish pulled the crap he did tonight he wouldn’t have escaped the rath of the Celtic fans!!!!! My biggest concern with his being there is the FT differential he ahs given opposing teams when reffing against the Celtics. I truly hope the federal government invetigates the NBA as they are now without a doubt in my mind a corrupt organization.

  • LakerFan

Its so sorry and sad how a celtic fan cant take a loss.
Call it what you want a W is W in my book regardless of what you think
no go to sleep and think about our parade you wont enjoy!!! lol loser!

  • LakerFan

Man please stop all these dumb excuses about refs. its over get over it unless your in tight with the commissioner and can maybe do something about it, shut the hell up YOU LOST!!!

  • LakerFan

    NOW LETS PARTY!!!! LAKERS BABY!!!!!

  • Jon

to all you fans who say you dont want to watch because you think it is fixed…good, dont f-ing watch. its disgusting how the losing team whines. you got smacked in the 4th because you stood on offense and got murdered on the glass. and Ray Allen and Paul Pierce played terrible. I just dont get how its the refs fault that Ray Allen cant hit wide open 3′s. anyone want to explain that?

  • Kevin Garnett

I only had 3 rebounds. Can I blame the refs?

  • Penzoil

What a total disgrace….you stupid referees calling it lopsided in favor of LA in the 4th qtr after letting both teams play the 1st 3 qtrs…..shame on the NBA…..how in the world you gonna give one team 20 extra free throws in an even game like that?? A game 7!!….. Unbelievably poor sense of the moment for the refs…… inexcusable…..Celtics couldn’t get a break…..seemed like every call went the Lakers’ way……shame, shame, shame……refs have to realize this is a game 7 and you can’t call every little touch foul especially after letting em play for most of the game….. horrible!

  • Kevin Garnett

I’m still confused how I only got 3 rebounds. Maybe it was the refs boxing me out.

  • Mel

hey it wasn’t the greatest game for both teams, and the Celtics have nothing to be ashamed of. You Celtic fans should show more class. if your team had won the game i can imagine what you’d be saying. Maybe next year. It was a good long series, and I was entertained. The refs had nothing to do with the win, being that this was a 4 point difference.

  • PurpleReign24

Bear: How can you say the game was fixed? The Celts won in 2008. Was that fixed too? Like Rasheed said “both team played hard”…unfortunately one team had to win tonight…

  • Penzoil

hey dumbass Laker fans….you barely eeked out a referee-assissted “win” in 7 games….it was an even series….now go back 2 years and remember the beat-down your team took at the hand of these Celtics……that could easily have been a 5 game series or even a sweep….the Celtics dominated your sorry behinds…..your team won one and we won one, but it is clear we are still the better team….got it??

  • VIC

You Celtic fans have a point the refs didn’t call anything against the Lakers. Here’s what you should do. Why don’t you put together a presentation with all the missed calls and send it to the NBA offices, maybe you can use a power point presentation to prove your point that should work wonders.

  • Mel

Hey Penzoil, grow up and be a sportsman.

  • PurpleReign24

That’s true…in 2008 the Celts opened a can of whip*ss on the Lakers…the whooping was so bad that the Lakers learned their lesson and responded with Back to Back titles…thanks for the motivation!

  • Penzoil

Mel, the Lakers had 21 free throws (made 16) in the 4th qtr whereas both teams played an equally physical defense….Mel, its a fact the better team was hindered from winning by the lopsided calls……no they were not at their best and the Lakers did a lot of things well, but you can’t convince me the better team won…..”The refs had nothing to do with the win, being that this was a 4 point difference” – Mel that is just silly…if you had said it was a 39 point difference (game 6, 2008 finals) and the refs had nothing to do with it, that would make sense, but a measly 4 pts?? please!….the simple fact is the lopsided refereeing had a lot to do with the final result and that is a doggone SHAME.

  • Penzoil

Hey PR24, last year don’t count….they didn’t beat the Celtics (Garnett out), so your team won one (by the skin of their teeth with the help of 20 extra free throws) and yes we won one, when we put that whoopass on yo asses!!

so you tell me…..which is the better team? Clearly it is the Cs.

  • John

    eerily similar:

He also worked Game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference Finals between the Lakers and the Trail Blazers. The Lakers were down by 13 at the start of the fourth quarter when Bavetta went to work. The Lakers outscored Portland 31–13 in the fourth quarter and went on to win the game and the series. It certainly didn’t hurt the Lakers that they got to shoot 37 free throws compared to a paltry 16 for the
    Trail Blazers.
TONIGHT LAKERS 37, CELTICS 17 FROM THE LINE,
IN 2000, LAKERS 37, BLAZERS 16! HOLY SHIT!!!

    FIXED!

  • PurpleReign24

Penzoil: Oh yeah…the Celtics are clearly the better team if not the best team! They beat Lebron James and his Calvaliers…they beat Dwight Howard and the defending Eastern Conference Champions Orlando Magic…so your Celts beat the the top 2 teams in the league! I wish the Celts did win …that way there would be no complaints about the refereeing…no complaints about some conspiracy or setup to have the Lakers win the title…but unfortunately…it just didn’t happen that way…it is what it is…show some decency and deal with the reality that Lakers are the Back to Back Champions!

  • Penzoil

Hey Vic, maybe these dumbass, no-sense-of-the-moment refs oughtta open their eyes and use a little common sense and maybe even have some sense of fairness, THAT would work wonders.

  • steph

    asterisk. What a joke.

  • Penzoil

Yeah, PR24 the Lakers are the Champs, congratulations. No seriously, the Lakers are a very good team and are much better than they were 2 years ago, and they earned a lot of respect from me and other Boston fans. Kobe’s single-minded focus is to be admired and Gasol’s all-around game is fabulous, and of cours, Fischer is money, so yes, congratulations. I am just upset that my beloved Celtics came so close with so much adversity this year and if they had played better they would have won despite the refs, but the refs definetly were adverse to the Celtics.

  • steph

Amazing the spin all the sportwriters are putting on it… yeah, yeah, yeah… we know… don’t want to bite the hand that feeds you. Man up guys… support this team that just gave you their hearts… call it like it was: one of the greatest thefts in sporting history. Asterisk.

  • steph

Im feeling for our guys. To have it stolen from them like that… thats gotta hurt.

  • Jeff

boston choked, there moron coach doc rivers gave up on game 6 which was a bad move cuz they had no chance to beat LA in game 7, everyone knew the refs were gonna favor the lakers at sum point in that game and if u didnt kno that then your stupid, boston blew a 13 point lead plus kobe and gasol havin bad shootin games and boston still loses, where was allen and pierce

  • Ron at

    Lakers are the best,
cuz, we pay the refs good moniessssss,
    hehehehe. hey money talks.

  • Pau G

why do u think jack sit at count side,
hey refs, I got my monies on the Lakers -7.
party at my pad tonight with hohos.
    pay day, refs.

  • franc

the reason why the blogger didnt say refs is because it wasnt the reason the celtics lost. 17 FT attempts in one of the lowest scoring finals in history, the real reason is the celtics gave it away and ron-ron OWNED the paint why cant you celtics wipe the slime away and look at the game more objectively, stop being drunk punks, the celtics being too tech-friendly and aggressive was a major deterrent coupled with the fact you got OUTREBOUNDED, and that defined the entire series! GEt with it idiots! REBOUNDS won MY Lakers the game, and thats that. I also recall you bunch crying in the Magic series games 4,5,6 and those were all EVEN games..

  • franc

Also, I guess Celtics were too rowdy and myopic to even notice the most obvious stat in the whole series, REBOUNDING again, if the game was fixed why did it go 7 games with a flurry of injuries and kobe being @ 95% witha lingering finger issue? Easy to answer this, Lakers almost shouldn’t have won it. They shot poor at first, but hey you bounce back, they werent about to lose to you sleazy turncoat bandwagon slimeballs again. Never shall it happen you hear! Defence @ end, big plays, Garnett’s less than decent rebounding and loss of perkins in a Lakers Home game helped to defeat you noobs. Stop blaming the Refs, they shoulda T’d Sheed for bringing Kobe down in the 1st QTR. F u Leprechauns, you guys are done.. glad it was like this game 7, because we are going for the threepeat!!!!!! BACK 2BACK!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Joe

Blaming the refs? What a lame excuse. You Celtics fans really need to learn how to handle a loss, and that’s what it was plain and simple. Penzoil– so the Lakers championship last year doesn’t count because you had a big man out for the year? hmm so did the Lakers in 2008, so maybe your title shouldn’t count. But then again we’ll let you have it and keep obsessing over it while the Lakers continue on with their dynasty and the C’s miss the finals for a decade or more. Nice try Boston, but your team just isn’t as good as the Lakers.

  • http://yahoo Ezquiel Reyes

To all u laker fans talk all u want the reality is nba wanted the lakers to win n u know it i will make no excuses about the refs there is no need to we all know what happen there. CELTIC NATION will never backdown from any laker n by the way we have 17 titles u only have 16 we r still #1 n we are 9-3 in the finals againts u we will be in the finals again next year the road will go thru BOSTON n remember our starting five have never lost a series thats a fact. We will be back.

  • Nadinski

Listen, the lakers had the worst Shot % in recent history the entire series…at 32.5% and they won. Yeah the refs made some bad calls, but those calls should have never mattered. If you play so poorly that a couple bad calls change the game.. well, its time to score some baskets maybe? The Celts, as hard as it is to say, pissed this away. Poor rebounding..its like they hoped the ball would magically float to them. Poor shooting…my god, look at ray allen….some of the worst shooting ever. They missed like have the shots in the paint! I mean 4 ft jumpers and layups! I was praying for the Celts, but they played like they didnt want the win. KG with 3 whole rebounds…I mean come on! They couldnt buy a damned basket and that why they lost.

  • http://yahoo Ezquiel Reyes

That just shows how much of basketball knowledge laker fans have in 08 bynum would of made a difference we gave u a beat down it took seven games n alot of help this year to beat us we made u tough whimps.

  • Joseph

Those who are crying that the nba is “fixed” then please stop watching the nba right away. Why bother watching? I understand if you’re frustrated that Celtics lost and you scream fix so either stop watching the nba because it’s fake or stop watching the Celtics and other nba games altogether to bankrupt this billion dollar league. Come on and make it happen. Prove David Stern wrong. Man, talk about sore losers.

  • lakertroll

grow a brain celtics fans. you lost. homecourt advantage is what it is. that’s why it’s called an ‘advantage’. in 2008, you had homecourt & won, now, it’s the lakers turn.

too bad your team won’t be around next year anymore. so enjoy another 20 years of irrelevance!

  • http://jimheo9a@gmail.com Tom

In Boston they have what is called Celtic’s pride & have won big games with their guts & players. You look at Laker big time wins & you see that they had the help of the Refs with whistle after whistle calling the game different in the all important 4th quarter. A ref gets caught betting on games & the guy he called the most before games was somehow allowed to work all important game 7. That shows how hard David Stern works to make sure he has the best guys calling the game.

  • http://www.glidebikes.com Glide Bikes

Lets start a Federal investigation of the NBA like Arlan Spector threatened the week before the Patriots Super bowl loss. The NFL knew this and did not want the Pats to win so once they lost it all went away (Brady was getting hit well after the throw by the Giants never 1 call). The Refs are payed the least in all the sports but can make a huge difference in the outcome. They should do background checks and financial checks on these guys and then do video reviews after the game to make sure they get it right. Then come up with bonus pay or merit system to grade them. I still feel ripped off from the Seattle Pittsburgh Superbowl and I am not a fan of either team. Its a shame to loose to the refs. With today’s technology this should not be tolerated.

  • Statsjockey

Hey Celtics fans. Congratulations on a long season with great success. Your team fought with a lot of heart and never gave up. They have a lot to be proud of for sure. On the subject of refs fixing the game, please stop the sour grapes. I saw the game just like you did, and I saw bodies all over the floor everywhere. The refs let them play as much as they could without it turning into a wrestling match. Yes, there was a differential in fouls, and the Celts had some key ones called on them late in the game. But that wasn’t the result of fixing the game. Instead, the Celts just wore out from being undermanned in a long and physical game and they started hacking when they were having trouble getting rebounds and keeping possession. Wallace had cramps and foul trouble in the 4th quarter, Garnett was gassed out and in foul trouble as well. In the player interviews and in the interviews with Doc Rivers, all they talked about was not having enough energy to close it out. None of them tried to take the low road and claim that it was something out of their control because they played like men, and in the end, they lost like men too. Hopefully, the Celtics fans will let their make an exit with respect by manning up like their team did.

  • Statsjockey

One last point about the referees. For years, Boston claimed leprechauns helped them because the Celtics always found a way to win down the stretch. Others said that there was a bias in favor of the Celts, and that the refs would not let them lose. Nonsense! The Celts won for all those years because they imposed their will on their opponents, and now that the same thing has happened against them by a taller, younger, and more physical team, just accept the fact that the best team wins a 7-game series by force of will. That force of will is demonstrated by the overwhelming rebound differential and especially in the offensive rebounds. The Celts had been dominating down low because Bynum could only play effectively for about 5 minutes per game, and they had Perkins to push around the lightweights Gasol and Odom. It was so obvious that he was the advantage because the Lakers clearly dominated the games where Bynum played extended minutes. But once Perkins was gone, then it cancelled out the loss of Bynum that the Lakers had been dealing with during the whole series. This left Wallace to fend for himself in the low post where he is clearly less comfortable than on the perimeter. And when push came to shove, Wallace and Garnett ran out of gas, and the Lakers imposed their will. So the better team won because it had the numbers on the last night of the season, not because there is some grand conspiracy to lock out the Celtics.

  • Painter

Lakers did not win – the game was handed to them. Once Boston went up by 9 in the 3rd one could see the refs felt LA needed help, so they gave it to them. That is abundantly clear. The disparity of fouls called, the lack of enforcing basic rules (Gasol up and down, rapist dribbles off of his foot, runs to the ball and starts dribbling again), and the total, and I mean total, blindness to LA hacks every time Boston went inside, and giving “just looking” fouls to Boston was the difference. The Lakers alone could not have won this game. The League has a lot to answer for as a result of this obvious handout. Given the odds (8 to 5), the Celtics actually won the game in the eyes of true basketball aficionados outside of LA (not the three monkeys: Brainless Breen, Homer Jackson, and Van Gumby, apologist all). Take away the extra free throws and who won? Boston should have the trophy, but it’s just a meaningless piece of worthless junk now anyway. A hollow feeling must pervade the Lakers organization today. Bittersweet at best, knowing that they didn’t earn a championship but received one as a gift. Unfortunately, it’s non-returnable, which would be the only decent thing to do if they had any pride whatsoever. By the way Statsjockey, you’re right about one thing, “…when push came to shove…” the refs ignored them except when they thought Boston might do some of their own. Might…. not did, might.
