Lakers celebrate finals win with parade 06.21.10 at 5:03 pm ET
By

Avert your eyes, Celtics fans, but the rival Lakers and their rooters are spending Monday lining the streets of LA in celebration of this year’s seven-game NBA finals victory over the men in green.

Local officials expected around two million supporters to line the two-mile route, and thousands had already filed in by the morning. The police were out en masse to hopefully quell any exuberant celebration that may have erupted in a similar fashion to the violence that occurred the night the Lakers won Game 7.

The Lakers themselves rode on a flatbed float and talked to the crowd through a microphone. However, unlike past years, there wasn’t a rally of any sort following the parade, meaning there would be no moments like Pat Riley’s guarantee or Mark Madsen’s dance at this year’s festivities.

The team announced a few days prior that it would pay the entire cost of the nearly $2 million parade.

Before it even started, there was already a little bit of controversy, though. Earlier in the day, many along the parade route had complained about a lack of portable toilets. There was more controversy as it was reported that marijuana lollipops, which are legal in the state of California, were being sold to parade watchers.

I still can’t believe that the Lakers have to pay for their parade. With everything (economically) that they bring to Los Angeles it’s a shame. The public relations team did a good job getting in front of that this year after learning from last year. They stayed ahead of the problem so that it wasn’t a big deal like last year like this blog said ( http://wellonscommunications.com/pr-blog/2010/06/20/the-price-of-good-pr-paying-for-your-own-championship-party/comment-page-1/#comment-282 )

Sorry Santos…the comparison is like Sam Adams to Dom Perignon because the Lakers are the class of the league. Face it, Boston in it’s current incarnation is nothing but a bunch of screaming idiots that try to intimidate their opponents into submission. The Lakers can play many styles…fast or slow, tall or small, finesse or grind-it-out. But the class that separates the two teams is that the Lakers don’t need to scream in everyone’s face to prove their point…they play hard, but don’t lose their class by yelling at everyone. So drown yourself in Sam Adams while we toast another title in LA. And don’t tell me about the Celts having one more title than the Lakers because that’s changing soon and the Celts won’t be around to stop it. And while the Celts hold the huge advantage in head-to-head titles, that’s ancient history from the 1960′s. In the last 24 years, the Lakers have won 3 out of 4 head-to-head matchups in the finals. So welcome back to the 1990′s when you barely made the playoffs because your team is about to be dismantled by its owners. Enjoy the ride down hill!!!
