Report: Could Shaq fit in Boston? 07.06.10 at 1:03 am ET
By

According to a report on ESPN.com, which cited league sources, the Celtics have expressed interest in center Shaquille O’Neal. With the C’s already over the salary cap, they could offer no more than the $5.8 million per year mid-level exception. According to the report, O’Neal would be intrigued by the idea of playing for Celtics coach Doc Rivers and with forward Kevin Garnett.

With Kendrick Perkins sidelined for part of the 2010-11 season following surgery to repair his torn ACL, the Celtics are looking for help at center. O’Neal averaged 12.0 points and 6.7 rebounds a game while playing 23 minutes a night for the Cavaliers in 2009-10.

The report said that O’Neal has also encountered mutual interest with the Hawks and Mavericks, and that if LeBron James returns to Cleveland, he would consider a return to the Cavs. O’Neal, 38, has played for the Magic, Lakers, Heat, Suns and Cavs in his career.

Would Shaq be a good fit for the Celtics?

I smell disaster for celtics if they will sign shaq….they will run out of gas in the end…only rondo is young now you will add another old guy in your team? lol….Pierce, Garnett, Allen, Wallace and Shaq = doomsday !!!

A great pick-up for the Celtics. SHAQ will do 2 things for the Green – He’ll make them OLDER & SLOWER.

Shaquille O’Neal is nothing but a backup center at this point in his career. It’s amazing that he is even still playing, at 38 years old, especially as a man of that Diesel size. Case in point: observe how he slowed the Cavs down in the playoffs against the Celtics. In general, a Verajao and Big Z platoon at center would have been much more effective than starting Shaq, who was barely able to run the floor and made it much easier to defend the Cavaliers.

I agree with the sentiments above. He will only make the Celtics older and slower. He should only be considered as a center off the bench who will give you 20-25–hopefully quality–minutes.

I think signing Shaq would be a short term fix for Perkins because Shaq can still match up with some of the big men in the league like D Howard. I think by signing Shaq if they could to the mid level acception would be great and a great short term fix until Perk gets back. Even if they sign him to a 2 year contract at a mid level I think it would be a good sign. Just think Shaq next to KG and then Pierce allen and Rondo. Even though it is an older line up it would be great.

And it would only be short term. We all know Shaq is getting older and slower, but he is still a force in the paint which we need. Better than Sheed taking 3′s all the time.

i think shaq, would be a wrong move, his atitude of the past may be to disruptive for a tight nit team , thats hoping to come back for another run as pretty much the same team,we got enough big names, 5years ago maybe.

Shaq its time to set on the sidelines and finish watching the game pass you by……. it’s over big SLOW….

Shaq looked better than he has in years , last year
12 pts and 6.t bounds is nothing to sneeze at
If we had him last year, we might’ve won the whole thing
He can provide just what we are lacking
    rebounding, and interior scoring
with Rondo feeding him, he could average 15 pts next year

Celtics are a defensive oriented team and Shaq doesn’t play defense. Hes lost on the pick and roll on defense. The Celtics exploited that. Bad fit.

You people are saying no because he’s slow? Are you serious? Have you seen Kendrick Perkins run up the floor? He might just be the slowest guy in the NBA with the worst hands. Their numbers were very similar last year. I’d like to see him in a Celts uniform next year coming off the bench.

I think Shaq will be great off the bench and Celtics need size. He should be agreed to come off the bench though. If they could sign him that would be great. I can not wait for Nr. 18.
