Harangody reflects on impressive week 07.09.10 at 2:45 pm ET

The Celtics finished the 2010 Summer League with a 1-4 record, but that matters little. The real purpose of the week is to start the process of finding out if any of the young players on the roster have a chance of sticking at the NBA level.

It’s still early, but so far it appears that the Celtics may have found a keeper with second-round pick Luke Harangody.

“I felt it [the week] went really well, except for the record we had,” said Harangody on Friday after an 86-68 loss to the Nets. “Personally, I thought it was a good week.”

The Notre Dame alum led the Celtics for the week with 16.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. The forward shot 47.1% from the floor and 50.0% on 3-point attempts. His level of physicality, a trademark in his Big East days, translated well over the five games.

“I knew what to expect,” Harangody said. “Especially when you play five games in five days. That’s the grind of it. You just have to keep your head down and keep going every day.”

Oklahoma City assistant coach Brian Keefe ran the Thunder summer league squad. He watched Harangody score 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting against his club on Monday.

“He looked like an NBA player to me,” Keefe said. “He made some shots and was really aggressive.”

Harangody, the 52nd pick of the 2010 NBA Draft, felt that he “learned a lot” over the week in Orlando.

“Four days of practice, with Boston, was great for me,” said the 2008 Big East Player of the Year. “I struggled the first day of practice, just picking up things. But as the days went on it just got better every day.”

The rookie-to-be harbors no illusions about his role should he secure a roster spot with the Celtics in 2010.

“I see myself as a young guy coming off the bench at times when they need me to do whatever they need out there,” Harangody said. “They have bodies, no question about that. I’m just going to be there to come off the bench at times, to be an energy guy.”

Harangody is looking more and more like a steal for a second round pick. I am pretty sure he is making the roster. Maybe 11th or 12th man, but I think he makes the roster this year, and I see him developing into a nice player.
What I like about the way the Celtics are going about business is that they are not banking the house on one thing….Let me illustrate. They are keeping a winning team for the most part intact as it ages, so that it can still contend now, but they are also getting good young players for the future so that the transition period from this championship team doesn’t take so long to come back from.

I hear over and over about how the point guard position is the new center position in the NBA, meaning its the most important. That’s a debatable point for sure, but for the sake of argument, if it is true, we have that position locked up for the foreseeable future in Rondo, who only gets better and better. Perkins also is young and the perfect counterbalance defensively to any center in the league. He doesn’t score much, but he makes up for it in that his man usually scores less, if not much less, than against most other centers, so he, in essence, neutralizes the star center of any team, i.e. Orlando.

Big baby has developed very well; TA I think is finally figuring himself out in respect to the team and the league. Just play solid defense and score on the fast break TA, that’s what they need you to do. Bradley should be a solid player, and Harangody I think is a complete steal.

Danny understands that the Celtics are old and here is the cool part, he is using it to the Celtics advantage. It seems to me that Danny is building for now and the future. He drafts guys that have plenty of potential that will develop under the Big Three. I say Big Three as no disrespect to Rondo, but because he is young and part of the present and future of Celtics as is Perkins. In fact Rondo illustrates how well Danny’s plan, at least what plan I think he has, works. Rondo out of high school was a superstar and was an elite player. At Kentucky he did well, but not to the level of expectation that was implied, thus his draft stock sunk and he gets drafted late and the Celtics grab him. Now, its very arguable that he is the most important player on the defending Eastern Conference Championship team. Not many expected that from him when he was drafted. Some say Danny and Co. have drafted good players. I disagree, I think Danny and Co. Drafted the RIGHT players. I have a hard time seeing Rondo or Baby developing into half of what they are on other teams. These young players are being brought into the system and taught NBA basketball from legends, and they are listening to them. Honestly there are a lot of NBA players that may have or could be very good if they had the right tutelage. Beasley I think is a fine example and I for one am sad that he is not coming here. I think Beasley is the type of player that has all the abilities, but he needs to be taught by some veteran players about playing in the league. I believe that GPA (Garnett, Pierce, and Allen) could have developed him into a monster. Right now, he is being traded for a second round pick, he could be worth so much more.

Anyway, I’ve rambled enough. I think the Celtics are in very good hands with Danny Angie. He has shown a willingness to gamble, but he also has vision for the future. Remember Danny is a former baseball player as well, and I think he understands a little better than other GMs the need to develop players over time and he is doing that.
