T. Allen agrees to sign with Grizzlies 07.11.10 at 4:33 pm ET

WEEI.com has confirmed with a source that Tony Allen has agreed to a multi-year deal with the Grizzlies. The Memphis Commercial Appeal first reported the agreement.

Allen, an unrestricted free agent, has spent his entire career with the Celtics since being drafted in 2004. He excelled this postseason as a defensive stopper and played a critical role in containing Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade.

Allen told WEEI.com during the playoffs that he would like to return to the Celtics next season … and beyond.

“I am a Celtic,” he said. “I love being a Celtic. It’d mean everything in the world [return next season].”

He added, “I mean, things happen but I feel like I’m going to be a Celtic for life.”

Should Allen sign elsewhere, his departure would leave a huge gap in the Celtics second unit as the organization looks to rebuild its bench this summer.

    Say it aint so!!! He needs to playing more (and in a Cs uniform). When this guy gets playing time, he can score…and he gets better and better….you need this guy’s young(er) legs to rest Pierce, Ray, and even Rondo. Danny sign him, he’s a stopper!!

    Are you KIDDING me? We need T.A. We really really need him, especially now that the Miami thing has happened. If this isn’t finalized yet, Please, PLEASE, just give him the 3rd year. It won’t kill you. Having a rookie bench? That just might officially close the book on the banner 18 possibility with these starters. Mr. Ainge? Please? PS… with the Cavs in a mess, know who you might want to trade for? Leon Powe. He belongs here, and he’ll give you everything every night. (Could have used him in these past finals, no? Might not have had such rebounding woes.)

    I love Tony Allen play style and I love the way he plays, so as a Celtic fan, I dont like this news at all. He is an awesome bench player who should have gained the sixth man of the year. Any way, I think Celtics made a good deal but only if they put Ray Allen in the bench and sign another great player to line-up ( Joe Johnson would be a good choice ). I know that Ray Allen´s salary is a lot so maybe, the thing to do is to make a deal with another team for his trade, to. I think Celtics need new fresh rosters to make the diference. Dont speak bad about Rondo. He is the only guy who has brought something new to the Celtics. I bet he will be one of the best PG or even the best PG in the NBA next season.
