O’Neal says he was part of Heat’s plan 07.14.10 at 4:59 pm ET

WALTHAM — In meeting with the media on Wednesday, new Celtics center Jermaine O’Neal spoke about his former team, the Miami Heat, saying that he was aware that the plan was to reel in star free agents LeBron James and Chris Bosh while also retaining Dwyane Wade. The Heat also wanted O’Neal back to team with the trio, but he instead took a two-year deal with the Celtics.

“I knew what the were trying to do, and I could have re-signed back with those guys, but it comes down to fit,” O’Neal said. “It comes down to personalities and style of play, and Boston has all that for me. It was the most important choice that I’ve made in my career.

“It was the first time I actually had the opportunity to even be a free agent in about 14 years, so it was very difficult, but I just felt like over the next two years I needed to be somewhere where the focus is strictly about winning now, not worrying about chemistry, not worrying about anything, just about coming in and helping the team win and doing my part of being involved in something good.”

As for having to worry about matching up against the Heat, O’Neal doesn’t seem overly concerned regarding who the top team in the Eastern Conference is.

“I don’t really look at it as an individual matchup,” O’Neal said. “Obviously they have a great tandem down there, but I feel like this team has the best team. … I had a great time down in Miami, I had an opportunity to re-sign back with them, but I just thought that this is where I’m meant to be.”

O’Neal said that he liked the Celtics’ powerhouse over the potential one Miami would eventually form based on the way Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo have proven their ability to work together.

“Those guys, they have a ring already, but they want another one,” O’Neal said. “I don’t have a ring and I want one, so I felt like their hunger and their focus is at a different level. There were some other good teams out there that i really looked at that i thought could compete for the championship, but threes guys just came off an NBA finals appearance and obviously they’ve won one, so they know what it takes to get there.”

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge applauded the Heat for the job they’ve done, saying that though they still might make some more moves, the big pieces they’ve put in place already are substantial.

“It’s pretty impressive,” Ainge said. “They’ve put a terrific team together, but it doesn’t even matter what they do. Obviously [additional moves] could make a little bit of a difference, but the three guys that they’ve put together down there with Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem, that’s a pretty solid team.”

Asked about the chemistry element that O’Neal previously referred to and how it might apply to the Heat, Ainge said: “Wining does amazing things to team chemistry.”

    WOW!!!!
    what an idiot

Thanks jermaine, you did make the right choice. You made the choice to go with the team and players that are on their way out. You are on your way out yourself…you used to be somewhat good but now your just washed up garbage. thanks for not joining the miami heat, you would be a terrible fit with the group of guys that they have now/want to get. Celtics may have one more good year in them, but just like the detroit pistons from a couple years ago, they are on the downhill i believe. They made their huge push in this years finals, but i don’t think they can do that again especially playing against the heat who can just run them out of the building with the speed of the big 3. Kevin Garnett is soft anymore. Paul pierce has bad legs. And ray allen is so inconsistent cuz all the man can do is sit on one spot and shoot 3 pointers. I really hope mike miller is the great 3 point shooter for the heat like ray allen is for the celtics.

i wanted him to come back to Miami because he is that “down low” presence that shaq would have on defense, while not standing in the paint and clogging the slashing lanes of Wade and LeBron on offense…

it would have been a great fit for both, but i guess now we have Big Z trying to accomplish that role for the next year or two, so the heat definitely need to find the guy that Jermaine would have been for us by next offseason… and there are plenty of free agents who might take the mid-level exception like Nene, troy murphy, and maybe even yao ming

If the Big 4 stay healthy (HUGE if), and Perk comes back and plays at a level 75% of last year’s level, I think O’Neal will turn out to be a great depth acquisition. A championship team needs quality big man depth, and having three 6′-10″+ guys will help. We saw how important that was in Game 7, as the Cs faded with Perk out of the lineup.

It will be interesting to see if this at all affects whether Sheed retires. His decision should hinge on whether he decides to get back in shape. I don’t want him back if he’s going to take another 82 games off. If he does come back serious about playing, the C’s will be stacked in the frontcourt come playoff time (albeit they will be very old) and the depth may prevent burnout.

If Sheed retires and they trade his contract to create some cap space, the Celts should try to bring in somebody to fill Tony Allen’s shoes.

Is Josh Howard still an option? Would he have to sign for the veteran’s minimum?

Look haters first of all there is only one ball Heats three will have to share there are reason why Oneal came to Boston why Ray stayed in Boston why fisher stayed in L.A instead of following them to South Beach. Its called loyalty, heart, team chemistry, earning a ring not having one handed to you or finding the easy way out. Not for Perkins knee and lakers getting some calls going there way Celtic Nation celebrates #18. Oneal is not done and the Celtics are not done ethier. Who took out LB 2 out of the last 3 years and Wade last year Bosh nowhere to be found. Like it or not the road goes thru Boston including the finals in 11. So Celtic haters think again it does not matter who the heat or magic have the Celtics are still the team to beat and they will prove it again we are coming back hungrier than ever to get #18 and remember our starting five when Perkins comes back still have never lost a playoff series and thats a fact Haters!

I think he made that comment so he wont seem like he didnt have other options.Im happy for celtics, that way Jermaine can come off the bench, his career will end on the bench. He isnt a center, heat did that waiting to sign wade and form big 3.Jermaine played awful last season and HEAT needed to get rid of the spider ebs holding Wade’s potential. Having JErmaine O’neal as center in the Big 3 heat is like putting hubcaps on a Mercedes.

Sheed is out with arthritis and so J.O’neal can fit in.

He was a disapointment to the HEAT, he shouldnt have had his jersey sold as an ALLstar in stores, he doesnt come close to an all star player.

Dont blame Riley or The guys in the HEAT now for wanting to make sure THEY
    win a championship.

J.O’neal is seriously delutional or fooling himself

why do people always say “only one ball?” We already know that idiots. No one has “handed” the rings to the Big 3 in Miami yet. (by the way, the Boston trio no longer qualifies as the big 3 as none of the 3 will be all-star starters). Boston should have won it this year but didn’t and now window is closing mad quick. A good run & gun team i think can beat Boston.
