| Report: Fernandez trade talks ‘likely on back burner’ for now | 07.28.10 at 11:17 pm ET |
The rumor mill has been buzzing with reports of the Celtics being in the mix to acquire Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez, who is reportedly unhappy with his current role behind Brandon Roy. But the talks may quiet down until next week.
On Wednesday Jason Quick of the Oregonian tweeted, “Rudy trade talks likely on back burner until Sunday. GM Cho tells agent Andy Miller he will meet w/coach McMillan in Vegas on Sun to discuss.”
That doesn’t mean, though, that speculation will be curbed until then. On Tuesday, Fernandez wrote in his blog, “There is gossip about my future and everyone asks me but I’m really just focused on the national team right now.”
In the meantime, here is a glimpse into why Fernandez is drawing interest around the league:
Fernandez has two years remaining on his contract and is set to earn $1.25 million next season. He averaged 8.1 points and 2.0 assists in 62 games last season.

Fernandez would be a nice aquisition if they could get it done. Will add some much needed depth to the bench, and give us an option should Marquise Daniels disappear again next year.

Get him Danny ! Lets go Wyc !

he’s got scoring punch but he’s not a strong defender. He’s 6’6″ but he can’t guard a strong wing. Do we really need a scorer that can only guard twos? Do we really need 5 guards? I think that once we signed Marquis we said goodbye to shooting guards. Let’s focus on a power forward that blocks shots.

Agree with Daemian here…though if the C’s didn’t do the Daniels deal I’d go for Fernandez strong. What did they see in Daniels that I didn’t? oh well…somebody like Darius Songaila or another big body who can grab you 5 a game and score 5-10 in 15 minutes may be the best option. Stay tuned! And I would LOVE to get Bill Walker back anyway we can…imagine if he was on the court in game 7 against the Lakers when we couldn’t buy a bucket.

This video makes me hate the Von Wafer signing even more. First choice shouldve been Rudy, him and Rondo as the starters in 2 years would be great. Second choice: Lebron’s Step daddy Delonte. Crazy, yes, but he hustles every play, the C’s need people who wont mail it in during games. And Von Wafer seems pretty crazy himself, not Delonte level, but still minorly tapped.

I agree that Rudy’s got a great game. The only problem is that being from Portland, I actually followed the Blazers playoffs and I can say that Rudy will NEVER amount to a player that makes a difference when it comes down to brass tacks. Just like Jermain O’Neal who also played for Portland, there is no real future for him as a starter because he’s mentally weak and apparently his ego isn’t allowing him to realize that he will be either a great bench player or an mediocre starter for his entire career. It’s just too bad Portland let Outlaw go instead of Rudy. At least Outlaw was to stupid to be mentally weak.

i’m glad you said something jeff. you guys think you are snagging a great player, but if he is anything less than the starter (which for a team like yours, you don’t need him to start) he will start to complain and give up. this guy is fragile, heartless, and feels entitled to be given minutes rather than earn them.
doubt you guys followed the blazer/suns series, but he started in the first three games and was given an opportunity to prove himself. he got the minutes he asked for, he got the looks he was dying to have. what’s sad is that he threw it away by passing up open looks and not burning nash who is smaller and older than him (he could’ve just drove and popped for a midrange shooter without worrying about getting blocked). he looked so dead and disinterested in that series, it hurt to watch it.
in getting fernandez, you’ll get a scorer. but having a team that prides themselves with having heart, you guys in boston deserve so much more.

I said this after we signed Wafer and I’ll say it again. I’d still rather see Delonte over these guys. He’ll Hustle. He plays better perimeter D than Wafer, Fernandez or Daniels, (although he’s not at TA’s level defensively) but he can shoot the 3, take the ball to the rack and handle the backup point guard role as well.
Wyc and Danny…bring back Delonte!
