| What Von Wafer does for the Celtics | 07.29.10 at 8:28 pm ET |
Von Wafer is a 6-5 shooting guard who does one thing well: shoot 3-pointers, and according to Hoops World he will be doing it for the Celtics this season. Wafer made 39 percent of his 3′s with the Rockets in 2008-09 when he appeared in 63 games and played over 1,200 minutes. Wafer also made 45 percent of his 3′s in his one extended season in the Development league in 2007.
He was drafted by the Lakers in 2005 and has had cameo NBA appearances in each of the last five seasons (Dallas signed him to a 10-day contract this past season but he didn’t see any action). After his breakthrough season with the Rockets, which included scoring 14 points and making a late shot to beat the Celtics — Wafer signed with Olympiakos Piraeus in the Euro League.
Wafer was bought out of his contract only a few months into the deal and he appeared headed back to the NBA, but he reportedly failed physicals with the Grizzlies and Rockets. He spent the summer training in his hometown of Louisiana and declared himself healthy. It’s still unclear what caused Wafer to fail his physical, but he has had back issues in the past.
Wafer also clashed with Rockets coach Rick Adelman about playing time and was sent to the locker room during a playoff game, for which he later apologized.
All of that makes this an interesting addition for the Celtics. His shooting ability will certainly be a plus for a bench that could use some. If he can accept his role and do it without complaint then this move has solid potential. If not, then it’s still a reasonable low-cost gamble for a player with an obvious skill.
Wafer gives the Celtics 13 players under contract with second round pick Luke Harangody expected to become the 14th shortly. They also have Tony Gaffney and Oliver Lafayette on non-guaranteed deals. Counted in those 13 contracts players is Rasheed Wallace, whose situation remains in limbo.

i don’t like it i feel we should of looked at rudy fernandez been patient and looked to sign him if so no injury problems a great shooter and a good player around the rim this guy has fialed physicals thts not a good sign got back issues
but saying all of this he could be amazing for us next season and if so i will shut my mouth if not this i don’t really think we have time to be getting player siginings wrong with the championship window closing ever so quickly but danny is boss he sees somthing i don’t so ill accept that but in my eyes rudy was a better fit

I love the move only because the Blazers almost certainly demanded too much in return for Fernandez. He is obviously quite talented and would most likely require something outrageous like a first round pick or Glen Davis. Wafer has shown he can shoot for high percentages, blow up in games and even play defense, which is without a doubt, what wins championships (other than Kendrick Perkins in Game 6 and 7 situations).

He brings even more toughness and attitude to a dangerous celtic team that will be looking for their 18th title and show the lakers just how it s done when they have homecourt this year in the finals.

Tai, I have to disagree with you concerning Rudy Fernandez. He would have had the same role that he had under Nate McMillian, which he was disgruntle about; backing up an All-Star. Rudy believes that he should be starting somewhere and that is not the role that the Celtics have for him. The last thing we need is a group of bench players still unsatisfied with their role.
Von knows his role; instant offense; hopefully some toughness…Rudy thinks he is Brandon Roy, but when he opportunity presented itself he cracked under the bright lights.

I love this guy’s physical style of play and junk-yard dog attitude. We need his 3-pt ability and his aggressive defensive approach. 6’5”/210, and we got him for a song and dance (vets min). I like his signing far better than Marquis Daniels. Youtube has videos on this guy showing him doing some flat-out audacious stuff with the ball offensively and defensively (some crazy sick blocks). He and Nate makes 2 peas-in-a pod for our backcourt. They may not be straight thugs but it doesn’t hurt having aggressive players who play with a little thug in ‘em when we face stiff elite competition. That’s just good championship basketball. Lakers have Artest and (now) Matt Barnes. It’s time for us to man-up also. It’s a good signing for the price we paid.

LOLZ.
Come again? Wafer plays “OLE!” defense. As in NO defense. What have you been watching?
Wafer and Robinson will make for an AWFUL defensive backcourt pairing…

Evidently, somebody needs to sign AL up as the Boston’s new Gm and coach. He seems to think he knows better than Ainge and Doc. They seem to differ from his lofty opinion.
And evidently AL hasn’t heard any of Wafer’s most recent comments (upon learning that the C’s are to sign him) about wanting to learn and eager to engage with the C’s defensive schemes which he feels will take his abilities to another level.
Maybe AL just likes to hear “himself” talk; and maybe he believes that ignorance is bliss.
Wafer has tremendous natural ability (he finshed 2nd in the 2003 McDonald’s Slam Dunk contest, second only to Lebron James) he just needs to be in a scheme which puts a premium on defense. Plus, he’s taken many taller NBA players shots out the air with his leaping ability. (See youtube).
Who is AL anyway? Would we talking about “Weird AL Yankovic” here?
His post definitely sounds like it.
