Rasheed Wallace rumors start again 01.11.11 at 11:47 am ET
By

Stephen A. Smith went on the Dan Patrick show and said that Rasheed Wallace told him the plan was for Wallace to come out of retirement and join the Celtics at some point this season. Naturally this has started the Sheed will come back rumor again, but there are several problems with this scenario.

First, Wallace’s agent Bill Strickland told Fanhouse’s Sam Amick that his client hasn’t changed his mind about his retirement (although Strickland did use the disclaimer, “for now.”) Second, Smith himself backtracked from the original claim saying Wallace told him he would return “months ago.”

So, there’s not even smoke on this latest rumor, but even if Wallace did want to return to the Celtics, there are compelling reasons to believe that it won’t happen.

1. There is no room for Wallace figuratively

The Celtics have four centers — Shaquille O’Neal, Jermaine O’Neal, Semih Erden and Kendrick Perkins, who is expected to practice this week and has announced himself close to returning. All four have had injuries this season, which is why Danny Ainge has four centers on the roster.

Two weeks ago on The Big Show, Ainge said this about a possible Wallace comeback:

“I know that he’s been in the locker room a couple of times this year and he’s been to a couple of practices. I know the guys are teasing him about that about coming back. He’s said that doesn’t want to come back. I’m not sure there’s room for Rasheed unless we just have a whole bunch of injuries. Right now our center position, we have three healthy centers, we have a fourth one that’s not too far away in Perk.” (Emphasis mine).

Ainge also said that he’s more concerned about his backcourt, which truly hinges on the health of Delonte West. The Celtics have come to the conclusion that Nate Robinson is not a viable candidate to replace Rajon Rondo should anything happen to him, which leaves West. The Celtics have centers. What concerns them is the depth at guard.

2. There is no room for Wallace literally

The Celtics have 15 players under guaranteed contracts. The deadline to release Von Wafer (and West) without having to pay them for the rest of the season has come and gone, which means that in order for the Celtics to add a player (like Wallace), someone would have to go either by trade or outright release.

Looking at the roster it would seem that adding another veteran big man is way down on their list of concerns.

3. The Celtics don’t view Wallace as a viable replacement for Kevin Garnett

Garnett isn’t likely to play Wednesday, but Doc Rivers insists that it’s only a matter of time and he is very close to getting back on the court. They also insist that Garnett’s injury is a muscle strain and has nothing to do with his knee.

Assuming that is the case, suppose Garnett suffers a more serious injury at some point, would adding Wallace make more sense? In a word, no.

In 2009-10 Wallace rarely played any position other than center. When he did play alongside Perkins up front, the Celtics weren’t very good, and Rivers even said that he didn’t like playing the two of them together.

In sum: If one of the O’Neals suffered a season-ending injury and if Perkins isn’t able to make a full recovery from knee surgery, then there might be a fit for Wallace if he even wanted to come back. But that’s a lot of ifs.

Hmmm….well wih the KG injury looking more serious I think they may want to start wiggling some room somewhere. I just don’t trust those KG knees.

  • Dave

I think there’s some room for him in Chicago. We could definitely use him there.

  • Dave

I can’t help but think this Flannery guy looks like Pau Gasol! Shave for the picture or something! I do not want Wallace to infect this team.

  • Steve

Jermaine O’Neal is not a viable option for the Celtics – take him off that list.

  • Jason

The last thing we need is Rasheed, he would ruin the chemistry and drive of this team.

    Sheeeed for 3!!!!!!!! BRICK

  • Celtics #1 fan!

Rasheed Wallace wasn’t the best last season and i dont think that this is a good idea. Steve, Jermaine O’Neil can be good sometimes, not likely, but hes better than Rasheed. KG better come back soon, we need him when were up against the Magic and thew Lakers. Hopefully, Perkins will be back in no time too!

Bring him back. He is a monster in the playoffs and thats what the celtics need. Jermaine Oniel is to brittle always getting hurt. Shak is only good for 15 a game. Bring back rasheed wallace and lets win another one.

Here are a few reasons why Rasheed Wallace WILL comeback to the Celtics this season.

1.) Jermaine O’Neal’s health is in question. He hasn’t been healthy all year, and now according to recent interviews, he’s going to need surgery. So, as of now, the Celtics currently have ONE healthy Center in Shaq.

2.) Semih Erden, the C’s ROOKIE 4th string center, has been playing hurt with a right shoulder injury for most of the year. He’s been playing significant minutes as of late with Jermaine’s inability to play for more than two games in a row and with KG also out. Erden also needs surgery, but has put it off to help the Celtics’ depleted frontline.

3.) Perkins is not due back until after the All-Star break, and even when he does come back, the Celtics would only have TWO (completely) healthy centers at their disposal, and as we know Shaq’s health is not gaurunteed.

3.) The Celtics ACTUALLY DO HAVE ROSTER SPACE. There are currently only 14 players on the C’s roster, as Avery Bradley was assigned to the D-League just a couple days ago… the plot thickens…

Rasheed’s chances of coming back are actually greater than what people originally thought. The C’s center position is very shaky right now and Rasheed’s services would no doubt be a lot of help. As for the notion that the C’s need backcourt depth, they actually don’t because Ray, Rondo, Marquise and Nate all play significant minutes, and when Delonte comes back (which will be in about a month), they are going to be that much deeper in the backcourt, with Von Wafer warming the bench just in case one of them goes down. If you’re concerned about Paul not having a back-up, Marquise can also play the 3 and he’ll do that a lot more once Delonte comes back. With Avery being sent to the D-League and opening up roster space, it seems as if Danny’s got another slick trick up his sleeve… BRING BACK SHEED says I.. We NEED HIM.

@ kaleb no thy don’t have any space it doesn’t work that way i think thy have to let him hsave his surgery and apply for a disabled players exception and sign sheed that way

i thinl all fingers are starting to point to ssheed right now he knows the system and is a much better player at this point than jermaine also he can play as a center and he doesn’t have knee issues he has back issues but not much else

and ithink he would be a much improved 3 point shooter aswell all fingers point to sheed i think JO just doesn’t look healthy JO is a much better shot blocker though but sheed can block shots also

im just waiting right now for the status of JOs health if hes not at least 80% it really does make sense to get rid of him in a trade with a young player like bradley or von

i always said harongody will be fine in this league hes having the better season out of the 3 rookies and deserves a chace to really get better

  • john

@kaleb buty have his surgey i mean JO in the case of bradley it doesn’t work that way hes still xontracted to the cs they can take him back whenever they want

  • Kaleb Berhane

oh ok.. i was a little confused about how demoting players to the nbdl worked.. but if J.O. goes for surgery, then theres definitely a possibility that Sheed could come back.. and I agree with u john.. i personally like what sheed brings to the team more than J.O. he stretches the floor more given his 3 pt range.. and hes also a great low post defender, he just doesnt get much credit for it.. J.O.’s given us pretty much nothing this year and sheed would definitely be an upgrade.
