Kevin Garnett says Suns coach Alvin Gentry was asking for playoff tickets 03.02.11 at 11:27 pm ET
By

Celtics forward Kevin Garnett and Suns coach Alvin Gentry had words for one another in the final seconds of the C’s 115-103 victory over Phoenix on Wednesday night. Things escalated when Rajon Rondo then attempted a three-pointer with the C’s holding a 10-point lead, which led to a technical foul from Jared Dudley.

“Alvin Gentry was asking me for tickets for the first round of the playoffs,” Garnett said after the game. “I told him I’ll hook him up, so that’s what that was.”

Celtics coach Doc Rivers shared his opinion on the exchange, saying he doesn’t believe in such behavior from coaches.

“I thought their bench, their coaches were talking,” Rivers said, “which I don’t think you should ever [do] if you have a suit and tie on and and actually can’t play. I don’t think toy should be doing a lot of talking to the players on the floor. It’s just my opinion.”

Garnett, who led all scorers with 28 points in the game, defended his style of play that has led so many to criticize him.

“I don’t really care, but don’t make stuff up. …I’m far from dirty,” Garnett said. “I play the game really hard. I play with my heart. I never going to make any excuses about that, so who cares about what they’re talking about?”

He said he generally wouldn’t expect a coach to jaw at a player, but given the tension between the two teams this season, he wasn’t surprised.

“It’s very uncommon,” Garnett said, “but they’re an uncommon team.”

It didn’t seem to bother DOC when Garnett was dressed in a Suit on the sidelines of the Bulls /Celtics playoff matchup a cpl of years ago and Garnett was droppin F bombs from the bench and coming out on the floor yelling at the Bulls players..

Garnett needs to tone down his swearing on the court, Young kids are at these games. Show some professionalism.

reeeko makes a damn fine point… he was giving it to gordon like he was beating a rug, did anyone see doc ask him to tone it down? i respect doc, but he has to practice what he preaches

  • john

what doc meant by when you wear a suit on the sidelines is when your a COACH you shouldnt be jawing at the other teams players and he is correct with that statment !!! garnett isnt a coach he was using the suit and tie statment to single out the coachs in the league ,,, wow read between the lines dude !!! lol

  • john

AGAIN ITS VERY UNCOMMON FOR A COACH TO JAW AT A PLAYER JUST TO DO IT !!! I DONT LIKE GENTRY AS A COACH ANYWAYS !!! HES NOTHING LIKE DOC OR PHIL JACKSONOR LARRY BROWN ETC,,,, GENTRY IS JUST ANOTHER REGULAR NO BIG DEAL COACH IN THE NBA FOR ME HE SUCKS AS A COACH !!! THATS JUST ME LOL !!!!

John stop hating on Alvin. Do your homework and stop displaying your ignorance. Alvin is a great coach and if you had any brains you would know that. What have you ever done and are you a big name person? Let me answer for you, probably not. Don’t take it personal just be real.

Wow, Garnett and Rivers are an assss. No professionalism at all. show some respect to other team and their players and coaches.

I bring my 3 year old to the games and I have no problem with KG sticking up for his teamates or cussing at other players. There is thousands of people in the stands dropping just as many F-bombs as Kevin Garnett is. Its part of the game….And Doc is NEVER gonna tell any of his guys to tone anything down on the court because he is a players coach and always has been. He didnt tell the crappy teams before KG and Ray allen got there how to play and he doesnt tell these guys how to play.

  • tata

Gentry must be a pretty good coach to get the Suns to the WCF last year.

  • Darshan

Gentry and some of the Suns players really are sick of trash-talking.

  • Streetsilence

First and foremost, KG is as professional as it gets. He takes his profession very seriously. He shows up to work early, he leave late, he doesn’t take days off, he doesn’t complain, he doesn’t demand more money, he doesn’t bad mouth his management, he’s always in uniform on and off the court, he doesn’t drink, do drugs, or any other illegal substance, and he puts 110% in everyday. How many people do you know that take there jobs even a fraction as serious as KG does. An F-Bomb is exactly what it is, a word. That’s all it is. Just a word. There are S-Bombs, N-Bombs, B-Bombs, and all kind of other bombs in our language today. Kids use them everyday. People in general use them everyday. “Show some professionalism”……That is totally irrelevant. Grow up!

I believe in Alvin Gentry and can say the proof is in the pudding. As for you john who lables Alvin Gentry as a no big deal coach, didn’t phil and the olther so call great coaches have to start somewhere before they because big name coaches? Besides, I wonder what you have ever done and I wonder what kind of name you have. Alvin is a great coach and if you check his stats, you know that yourself. Stop displaying your ignorance ans stop hating on Alvin. You wouldn’t know a great coach if you tripped over him.

I’m late, but reeeko you are a complete idiot. Please learn to actually comprehend the words that you read instead of making up your own conclusions on stuff that literally wasn’t in the article.

““I thought their bench, their coaches were talking,” Rivers said, “which I don’t think you should ever [do] if you have a suit and tie on and and actually can’t play.”

ACTUALLY CAN’T PLAY. I don’t see how KG is someone who can’t play basketball, so Doc’s comment isn’t hypocritical. You’re just an idiot.
