Impromptu Irish Coffee: Celtics awesome at high-fiving

Wake up with the Celtics and your dose of Irish Coffee …
With only Northeastern product J.J. Barea‘s role in the demise of the Heat left for Boston NBA fans to root for, I’m not sure the news that the Celtics were the best team in the league at touching each other is any consolation.
But a recent study by researchers at the University of California indicated that the C’s are not only among the league’s elite in skill but also in chemistry, according to a Wall Street Journal report . The study analyzed the number of times NBA teammates touched each other, and the Celtics are some of the best high-fivers in the league.
After reviewing broadcasts of games from the 2008-09 season, they concluded that good teams tend to be much more hands-on than bad ones. Teams whose players touched the most often were more cooperative, played better and won more games, they said.
While there’s no evidence that an NBA team can touch its way to victory, the two touchiest teams in the study, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, finished the season with two of the NBA’s top three records.
So, where do they hang the banner: 2008-09 NBA Touchy-Feely Champions? Or is it a trophy of two players in a James Posey-Paul Pierce-like embrace ? Does this make Brian Scalabrine Hall of Fame eligible as one of the great high-fivers in league history? So many questions.
And obviously Danny Ainge cost the Celtics another high-five title by trading Kendrick Perkins.
JEFF GREEN: ‘I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE AGGRESSIVE’
Appearing on Washington, DC’s ESPN Radio affiliate, Jeff Green reportedly claimed he should have asserted himself more after joining the Celtics as a result of the Perkins trade. In other news, the sky is blue.
“I should have been more aggressive when I look back on it now. That’s what they brought me in for. … Being a young guy in this league, it’s tough coming in where you got Kevin Garnett on one side, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo now who’s been with that team for a long time. It was tough for me to come in and be ‘the man.’ Coming off the bench, it was tough. In my mind, I’m thinking, ‘Those guys preach, sharing the ball, sharing the ball.’ It was kind of, ‘You gotta be aggressive,’ but I didn’t want to step on anybody’s toes. I look back at it now, and I should have taken it for a grain of salt and taken my slice of the pie. I don’t think I did that when I came into that situation.”
New favorite Green quote: “I should have taken it for a grain of salt and taken my slice of the pie.” Somebody’s been watching Shannon Allen‘s cooking show a bit too much lately.
CELTICS COMING & GOING
Coming? Asked if there was any NBA team he would like to play for, Raptors point guard Jose Calderon told Spanish newspaper La Gaceta , “Obviously, everybody would like to play for Boston or the Lakers, because apart from being two of the best teams, everything around them is amazing. When you watch that, you’re like, ‘How cool!’ But you’ve got to realize that it’s difficult to get a spot there.” Of course, Calderon is under contract for $20 million over the next two seasons, so that puts a spot on the Celtics roster even further out of reach. …
Going? As we learned yesterday, Nenad Krstic is negotiating a two-year deal overseas worth an estimated $6 million with CSKA Moscow, according to a report out of Russia . Considering the Celtics entered the 2010-11 season with Shaquille O’Neal, Jermaine O’Neal, Kendrick Perkins, Semih Erden and Glen Davis on the roster, and only JO remains, Krstic’s surprising departure almost guarantees the Celtics draft a center on June 23. …
Coming? The agent for Marquis Daniels told CSNNE.com that his free-agent client — who had spinal surgery after his scary injury against the Magic in March — will be available next season and wouldn’t rule out a return to the Celtics. Said Mark Bartelstein: ”When the time comes, he’s going to look at and explore all his options. But Boston is certainly a team he knows well, has a great amount of respect for and really enjoyed his time there.” …
Going? If Celtics assistant Lawrence Frank doesn’t get a head coaching job this offseason, it’s not for a lack of trying. Frank lost out to Kevin McHale for the Rockets job and Mark Jackson for the Warriors job, but he’s still rumored among the candidates for the same role in the Raptors organization and with the Pistons . …
Coming? We’ve been running daily profiles of potential Celtics draft picks on the blog. Check them out here and come back to that same link every day for the next potential pick.
