Irish Coffee: Six Celtics actually play basketball

Wake up with the Celtics and your daily dose of Irish Coffee …

Celtics restricted free agent Jeff Green played with the big boys, and won.

A fixture in exhibition games hosted by NBA stars during the lockout, Green helped former Thunder teammate Kevin Durant as well as LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, LaMarcus Aldridge, Jamal Crawford and former Boston College standout Reggie Jackson win the U.S. Fleet Tracking Basketball Invitational [3] in Oklahoma City on Sunday night.

Green totaled 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists in 48 minutes of a 176-171 overtime victory against the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Michael Beasley, Damien Wilkins, James Harden and Jonny Flynn. Beasley (51), Anthony (43), Durant (42) and James (40) all eclipsed 40 points.

“You put guys like that on the court, you are going to do whatever it takes,” Green told reporters after the game [4]. “It was fun at the beginning, then it got serious at the end. It’s great to play these type of games, but we do want to get the season started.”

Green was one of six current or recent Celtics who actually played competitive basketball over the weekend. Here’s a rundown of the other five …

  • Celtics backup point guard Avery Bradley started and totaled just seven points on 1-of-6 shooting in 25 minutes of an 89-68 blowout loss during his debut for Israeli team Hapoel Jerusalem. Bradley committed more turnovers (4) than he totaled assists (2) and rebounds (1). Ouch.
  • Playing for Vanoli-Braga Cremona (1-2) in the Italian league, Von Wafer totaled 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting in 32 minutes of action during a 92-89 loss to Banco di Sardegna. He is averaging 19.0 points (62.5 FG%, 9.1 3P%, 73.7 FT%), 3.7 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.3 assists in his first three games.
  • Celtics second-round pick E’Twaun Moore totaled only two points (1-of-5 FGs), two assists and two rebounds in 24 minutes of Italian club Benetton Treviso’s 83-75 loss on Saturday. Moore is averaging 6.7 points (50.0 FG%, 50.0 3p%, 50.0 FT%), 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 26.3 minutes.
  • Moore’s BT (1-2) teammate, Brian Scalabrine, scored 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting. He is producing 14.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 32.3 minutes per contest over the team’s first three games.
  • Nenad Krstic produced eight points (4-of-5 FGs), five rebounds and two blocks in 25 minutes during Russian team CSKA Moscow’s 77-64 win on Sunday. Krstic is averaging 7.8 points (38.5 FG%), 4.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.8 blocks in six appearances.

JAJUAN JOHNSON: ‘I WANT TO BE’ IN BOSTON

Taking a break from workouts in Indianapolis, Celtics first-round draft pick JaJuan Johnson watched an hour of Purdue University basketball practice over the weekend, and Journal & Courier reporter Jeff Washburn caught up with [6] the former Boilermakers forward. Here’s what he had to say:

“It’s tough, because I want to be out there [in Boston] meeting the guys. I want to get accustomed to how it is going to be. I’m just working out in Indianapolis. That’s it, really. You have to be optimistic. All I can do right now is kind of hope for the best for whenever it’s going to be. I do think it’s going to get settled at some point, but when is a big question.”

Good to hear Johnson is working out. It’s got to be strange waiting in limbo — not only to actually meet many of his new teammates but to get paid.

QUICK RELEASE: CELTICS LINKS

Celtics captain Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo are reportedly now contractually obligated to participate [7] in the six-game world tour during what would have been the first two weeks of the NBA season. Kevin Garnett is apparently still mulling an invitation.

The tour is set to begin in Puerto Rico on Oct. 30, followed by stops in London and Macau before ending with a pair of games in Australia by Nov. 9.

Pierce is also expected to play [8] in the four-team Las Vegas Superstar Challenge, hosted by Allen Iverson on Nov. 12-13. Durant and Amar’e Stoudemire are also among those rumored to participate. …

Celtics guard Ray Allen would play in the 1980s [9] if he could play in any era. “The game was a lot more physical and tougher,” he said. …

Senegalese kids love Garnett [10]. …

Former Celtics swingman Marquis Daniels is scheduled to participate [11] in an exhibition game organized by Josh Howard on Nov. 12 in Dallas. You’ll remember Howard recently told The Globe, “Boston is a great organization. I also have a good friend in Marquis Daniels that spent a lot of time up there and who spoke highly of the organization.”

Meanwhile, the Crossover Chronicles blog raised the point [12] that Daniels would be a likely invite to Dwight Howard’s planned all-star game in Orlando. Daniels recently had his Edgewater High (Orlando, Fla.) No. 3 jersey retired. …

Celtics free agent backup point guard Carlos Arroyo is battling a hamstring injury [13] and remains 60-70 percent healthy as Puerto Rico prepares for the start of the Pan American Games on Wednesday.

“I hope to recover before the tournament,” Arroyo said. “It’s hard because when you’re trying to get the rhythm and play, awaiting pain, it’s difficult.” …

Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo will play Monday night in Lexington for the Big Blue All-Stars alongside John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Tayshaun Prince and Enes Kanter against a Villains team that features Tyler Hansbrough as its star and Christian Laettner as its coach. …

Celtics center Jermaine O’Neal‘s Vegas Vacation was still going earlier this month [14], as he apparently crashed Barry Zito‘s bachelor party. No word yet on whether J.O. is lobbying for a “Hangover 3″ cameo. …

A great story from Celtics legend Bill Sharman during a Q&A with NBA.com [15]: “I told Red Auerbach that I didn’t think the hoops were the right height at one of our away stadiums, and Red approached the owner of the team, and they got into it and Red knocked his front teeth out.”

But then there’s this: Asked to pick between Boston and Los Angeles, the former Lakers coach said, “Los Angeles … without a doubt. I have been a Laker for 40 years, and I am purple and gold all the way!” Ok then.
