Irish Coffee: E’Twaun Moore or E’Twaun less?

Wake up with the Celtics and your daily dose of Irish Coffee.
If you just watched this highlight video and knew nothing else about E’Twaun Moore , you might think the Celtics second-round draft selection is destined to become an NBA rotation player once the lockout comes to an end — especially when the announcer for his Italian club Benetton Treviso yells: “E-Twaun Moore-ah, alley-oop-ah!”
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
In four games and 26 minutes a night as a starter for Benetton TV (2-2), Moore is averaging 7.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.5 blocks per contest. Sure, he’s shooting 50 percent from the field, but he’s making just 30 percent of his 3-point shots and 50 percent of his free throws.
While Moore’s production in all phases of the game (10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block and 1 assist in 25 minutes) during a 72-55 blowout win on Sunday is encouraging, let’s put his performance into perspective.
Brian Scalabrine and Von Wafer , two players who could barely crack the Celtics lineup in the Big Four era, also play in the same Italian league. In fact, Scalabrine, plays for the same team, and he’s generating 12.0 points (71.4 FG%, 66.7 3P%), 6.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 0.8 steals in 32 minutes a night. Wafer plays Moore’s position for Vanoli-Braga Cremona, averaging 19.4 points (63.6 FG%), 3.4 rebounds, 2.2 steals, 1.2 assists and 0.4 blocks in 31.4 minutes over his first five games.
Moore’s ability to make the Celtics roster might depend less on his expected contribution and more on the team’s financial situation after a new collective bargaining agreement.
Meanwhile, in Israel, the Avery Bradley saga still goes unresolved. Still listed on Hapoel Jerusalem’s roster entering Monday’s game, conflicting reports about the Celtics backup guard’s future overseas continued to emerge as late as Sunday.
Eurobasket.com’s Dubi Pick reported that Bradley will start in Hapoel Jerusalem’s game on Monday and “board a flight back to the United States the same night.” But Jerusalem-based blogger Noam Schiller suggested that the rumor may be premature, even though Bradley may have “angrily walked out” on the Israeli club’s latest practice amid confrontations between American and foreign teammates.
Is it just me, or is there a growing frustration among NBA players overseas? The failure of the World All-Star Classic to export star players and the lack of success for others who negotiated NBA-out clauses is just another blow to the union’s leverage. Perhaps that’s why players pulled their last card (decertification) and owners delivered an ultimatum over the weekend: take 51 percent of basketball-related income or lose a whole lot more.
We know where Glen Davis stands on the issue: “Take the 51 percent man and let’s play.”
And we know where Paul Pierce stands, as numerous reports indicated he is the most vocal of NBA players urging union members to decertify.
We now also know where Rajon Rondo stands.
“We’ve already gone down more than 4 percent from 57,” Rondo told the Herald . That’s a $400 million cutback that we’ve already agreed to give back. I mean, (performing) artists don’t give up 50 percent of their revenues. There’s no business model for what they want us to do.”
While ESPN.com reported that a number of players and agents are hoping to secure enough signatures (130) to request the National Labor Relations Board put decertification up for a majority vote to the players’ union, Celtics guard Ray Allen tempered that talk.
“I don’t think Paul was trying to go behind anybody’s back or anything,” Allen told the Herald . “We haven’t had many meetings just for the players, and I think guys wanted to get together and talk about what was going on.
“No one was doing this or saying anything to spite the union. This was just for the pure education of it. We were just having a conversation with each other to educate and inform each other.”
In related news, the Celtics would have already played games against the Cavaliers , Hawks and Pacers already if the NBA actually existed this season. Instead, Pierce and Kevin Garnett continue to scrimmage against Ricky Rubio and others in the Los Angeles area, Pierce plans to play in Allen Iverson ‘s Las Vegas Superstar Challenge on Nov. 12-13 (available online for less than $10 here ) and Celtics restricted free agent Jeff Green throws down more dunks in exhibition games.
