Irish Coffee: Celtics Rumors 911 (Episode 2)
Posted By Ben Rohrbach On November 29, 2011 @ 11:28 am In General | No Comments
It’s Episode 2 of a show we’ll call “Rumors 911″ from here on out, as the water cooler boils over with scuttlebutt (Ok, that doesn’t sound right …) and nobody’s name is off limits in Boston — if only because Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge likes it that way.
Today’s Celtics-related topics of conversation: Mavericks free agent center Tyson Chandler (yes please!), Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo (God no!) and Knicks free agent guard Roger Mason Jr. (so what!).
First, the longshot: Discussing high-profile free agents on NBA TV, NBA.com’s David Aldridge rather calmly slipped in this gem: “Boston is a team that has very few players under contract right now and desperately needs a center. They’re looking very hard at Tyson Chandler” (h/t Red’s Army ).
The first two parts of that comment are entirely true, considering Jermaine O’Neal is the lone center on a C’s roster with just six players under contract enter the Dec. 9 free agency period. The latter portion of Aldridge’s statement are curious, if only for the obvious question: How?
It’s not impossible to land Chandler, just improbable. But at least the Celtics can “look very hard” at him.
SAMUEL DALEMBERT: PLAYING FOR HEAT ‘WOULD BE FANTASTIC’
It sounds like we can cross another center option of the Celtics’ list of potential free agent targets, as Samuel Dalembert appears enamored with the Heat, based on this Fox Sports Florida report .
Considering he has more than 50 relatives in the area and already owns a house in Boca Raton, Miami seems his likely destination, if a) as Dalembert indicated he’s open to signing for the mid-level exception and b) the Heat want him. Also, his list of other potential destinations included the Knicks and Rockets, not the Celtics.
REPORT: CELTICS OPEN TO TRADING RAJON RONDO
The Chris Broussard report that the Celtics are open to trading their starting point guard would be news, if only Ainge didn’t tell WEEI at the end of last season that nobody on the roster was off limits in a trade.
The most important qualifier in this rumor is this: FOR THE RIGHT PRICE.
Ainge wouldn’t trade Rondo for Jimmer Fredette. It would be for Chris Paul, and probably only for Chris Paul, and wouldn’t Ainge be crazy to not at least consider that option?
ROGER MASON: ‘RAY ALLEN CALLED ABOUT BOSTON’
If you believe free agent Knicks guard Roger Mason Jr., Ainge isn’t the only one exploring options for the roster.
“I’ve had guys calling,” Mason told The Washington Examiner . “Ray Allen called about Boston, and I’ve talked to Carmelo [Anthony] about going back to New York, and Andray [Blatche] wants me to come back here to Washington. Hopefully I’ll have some good choices.”
I’m not sure why Allen called Mason, but hopefully it wasn’t about basketball. For a sharpshooter, Mason wasn’t exactly Bob Lee Swagger in “Shooter,” averaging 2.9 points on 33.8 percent shooting in 12.3 minutes over 20 games for New York last season.
