Irish Coffee: Imaginary 2011-12 Celtics roster
Posted By Ben Rohrbach On December 5, 2011 @ 1:07 pm In General | No Comments
We’ve already discussed the Celtics reported interest in the following players: Shane Battier, Kwame Brown, Shannon Brown, Tyson Chandler, Marquis Daniels, Reggie Evans, Aaron Gray, Grant Hill, Josh Howard, Chuck Hayes, Carl Landry, Roger Mason, Anthony Parker, Joel Przybilla and Michael Redd.
Over the weekend, The Washington Post reported the Celtics are indeed among nine teams interested in Josh “Not Dwight” Howard, and The Plain Dealer confirmed the Cavaliers will have to contend with at least the Celtics and Knicks for the services of Anthony “Not Candace” Parker. And Evans practically drooled over the possibility of playing for the Celtics, telling The Boston Globe , “I was kind of surprised when they reached out to me. It was an honor, especially with the kind of players they have on their team.”
However, it doesn’t appear the Celtics are among the potential landing destinations for Chuck Hayes, as his agent Calvin Andrews told Houston’s FOX affiliate (h/t Red’s Army ) his client is focusing o the Blazers, Raptors, Rockets, Kings and Timberwolves. In other words, he’s looking for maximum dollars, not victories.
Also, an anonymous agent told the Boston Herald he doesn’t “see any way” the Celtics can’t get a deal done with Glen Davis and that Jeff Green‘s return to the Celtics “is practically done.”
Finally, according to Jason Richardson‘s hometown paper, The Saginaw News , the Bulls are considered the favorites to land him, although “rumors have also linked him with the Boston Celtics” — whatever that means.
With this knowledge (or lack thereof it), let’s take a stab at what a Celtics’ opening-day roster could look like.
Kevin Garnett: $21.2 million
Paul Pierce: $15.3 million
Ray Allen: $10.0 million
Rajon Rondo: $10.0 million
Jermaine O’Neal: $6.2 million
Jeff Green: $5.9 million (qualifying offer)
Glen Davis: $5.0 million (Bird rights)
Shane Battier: $3.0 million (mini mid-level exception)
Avery Bradley: $1.5 million
Joel Przybilla: $1.4 million (10-year veteran minimum)
Michael Redd: $1.4 million (10-year veteran minimum)
Delonte West: $1.3 million (non-Bird exception)
Aaron Gray: $1.0 million (4-year veteran minimum)
JaJuan Johnson: $0.9 million (1st-round pick cap hold)
E’Twaun Moore: $0.5 million (NBA rookie minimum)
It could be better. It could be worse. I just wanted to give you an idea of how and with whom the Celtics might fill out the roster, and I’ll probably take a few more stabs at it before the Dec. 9 free agency/training camp insanity.
Five important notes here: 1) Re-signing Green and Davis should be priorities, 2) who the Celtics can land with the mini mid-level exception is probably Ainge’s most important move, 3) the C’s can give West slightly more than another team that offers the veteran minimum because of the non-Bird exception (120 percent of last year’s salary), 4) the Celtics need to land two free agent centers at the veteran minimum and 5) Bradley, Johnson and Moore will all have legitimate shots to earn big minutes for the Celtics this season.
JOSH SMITH: RAJON RONDO RUMORS ‘A SICK JOKE’
While Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo has yet to publicly speak about the Chris Paul trade rumors, his agent Bill Duffy addressed the issue, telling the Boston Herald , “It’s just disturbing. It’s disturbing for everybody. It’s disturbing for me. It’s disturbing for him, because it makes one think, ‘Where do I stand in this relationship?.”
Rondo’s high school teammate and good friend, Hawks forward Josh Smith, also spoke for Rondo to NBA.com .
“Rajon didn’t talk much about it but let me do it for him. It’s mind-boggling to me to see people talking about getting rid of a player who damn-near broke his arm during the playoffs last year for his team and kept playing. We’re talking about arguably the best player in the playoffs for his team energy-wise, defensively and offensively. It’s a sick joke. For anyone to talk about getting rid of him, one of the elite point guards in this league and a true point who passes first and shoots second … it just reminds me of what I already knew, that the NBA is strictly a business. They can try to make it as family oriented as they want to, but at the end of the day it’s a business. And the fact is there is no loyalty in the NBA or any other profession.”
Of course, the Celtics would only be interested in trading Rondo for Paul, the elite point guard in the league.
QUICK RELEASE: CELTICS LINKS
The Celtics will visit the Heat two days after their season opener against the Knicks in New York on Christmas Day (TNT, noon), according to a CSNNE.com report . Also, the C’s will play a pair of preseason games against the Raptors, in Toronto on Dec. 18 and home in the TD Garden three days later. …
JaJuan Johnson‘s mom is pretty psyched about the end of the NBA lockout, if only because she won’t have as much to clean up around the house. “I got kind of tired just sitting around the house,” Johnson told the News-Sentinel . “I know my mom is probably ready for me to leave. She always says the house gets a little more messy when I’m around. I’m happy to start a new chapter in my life.” …
Ray Allen was supposed to make an appearance on Friday’s episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” but lockout legal logistics left his contribution on the cutting room floor — until now in the YouTube video embedded below. The younger brother of Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, an 11-year-old who took his own life as the result of bullying, 8-year-old Charles Walker was surprised on set by Allen, his favorite player.
The New York Times reported the absence of Allen, who appeared at Walker’s school last week for two reasons: to discuss the dangers of bullying and make sure Charles’ classmates believed him when he said he got to play 1-on-1 mini basketball against his favorite NBA player in his own bedroom.
