Irish Coffee: Greg Stiemsma’s March to NBA legitimacy 03.26.12 at 1:55 pm ET
By

As Austin Powers reminded us, the idiom of a steamroller as an overwhelming, irresistible force isn’t exactly an apt one. Rather, the plodding machine goes about its business, transforming a bumpy road into a smooth, consistent surface. And so goes the NBA life of Greg “The Stiemroller” Stiemsma.

Since amassing 13 points and seven rebounds during his first career start just six games into his rookie season, Stiemsma became somewhat of a cult hero in Boston — Brian Scalabrine 2.0, if you will — particularly after Tommy Heinsohn compared his shot-blocking prowess to the legendary Bill Russell.

Except, the “Scal-a-bri-ne” chants that so often enveloped the Garden came in the final moments of blowout victories by a championship-contending team, a Gino-esque symbol that signaled another opponent throwing in the proverbial white flag. The opposite is true for this group of Celtics, whose lack of depth in the frontcourt requires a nightly contribution from the 7-foot Stiemsma if they hope to accomplish anything in the playoffs.

“I don’t think there’s been one real moment that it kind of all clicked in, but this whole season has been about opportunities,” said Stiemsma. “Early on, even in the preseason and the training camp, I had certain opportunities, and I got to play well in those opportunities. So, I think early on it helped me establish just in my own head that, ‘All right, I can play at this level and proved that.’

“So, even if I have a bad game or have a bad possession, whatever it is, I can just get over it and not worry about the big picture of ‘Maybe I’m not cut out for this level,’” he added. “I think I’ve proved that I am.”

Doc Rivers is forced to play Greg Stiemsma, and it's paying dividends for the Celtics. (AP)

The road hasn’t always been so smooth for Stiemsma. He went from leading Randolph (Wis.) High to three straight state titles, to averaging just 2.7 points and 2.3 rebounds in 85 games over four years while battling depression at the University of Wisconsin, to the 2011 Pan American Games in Mexico as a member of the bronze medal-winning USA Basketball squad, and to Turkey (twice), South Korea and Sioux Falls (twice).

“The journey I’ve been on, I’ve had a lot of losses, and that’s something I haven’t really experienced in my career at any level,” he said. “Growing up as kids, we expected to win every game. Then overseas, to be on a below .500 team, that was tough. So, it feels good to be here in a winning program. There’s a lot of expectations, too. We step on the floor and expect to win every night. We have big plans for the rest of the year.”

Even this season has had its share of ups and downs. Between his breakout performance back on Jan. 2 and March 6 — the night before Chris Wilcox played his final game of the season — Stiemsma didn’t score more than four points over a 30-game span that included seven DNPs. Not to mention a laundry list of injuries to his right foot (bone bruise), left foot (plantar fasciitis), right thumb (jammed) and right pinkie (“just a flesh wound”).

“There’s always little bumps and bruises that you get throughout the season,” he said. “This year, with the situation we’re in, now that Ryan [Hollins] is here we have a little bit of help, but otherwise we didn’t really have a choice. I’ve worked too hard to get to this point to let a couple little injuries keep me off the floor. It’s been a journey to get here, so I’m not going to let something little keep me off the floor.”

Without Wilcox and Jermaine O’Neal for the remainder of the season, the Celtics will rely heavily on Stiemsma to ease the load at center placed on Kevin Garnett‘s shoulders, at least until Hollins can pick up the system.

“Greg’s been huge since the departure of J.O. and our lack of big men,” said Garnett. “I think he’s stepped in and been solid for the road that we need him. He understands what we’re doing here, he understands his role, and I think he plays his role very well.”

In his last 12 games, Stiemsma is averaging 4.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 1.1 steals in 18.4 minutes a night. Count Scalabrine among those who never had a month that productive in a Celtics uniform. For the season, the former NBA Development League Defensive Player of the Year has produced 7.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, a rookie-best 4.2 blocks, 1.6 steals and 1.4 assists per 36 minutes. In other words, opportunity taken.

“I think my confidence is coming,” said Stiemsma, who totaled 10 points and seven boards in Sunday’s win over the Wizards. “It’s been building all season, and right now I feel about as good about my game as I have all year.”

That confidence was on display Sunday, when Stiemsma took four shots from 10-23 feet, knocking down three of them — both forcing opposing defenses to respect him and opening up things for his teammates. “I mean, I’m sitting there wide open from 15 feet,” he said. “I’ve gotta knock those down.”

Asked what he’s noticed from Stiemsma in recent weeks, Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo added, “Just his confidence shooting the ball. He’s knocking down the elbow 15-footer shot, getting a lot of blocks out there and his defensive rotations are getting better.” To be sure, that last note goes a long way in Doc Rivers‘ eyes.

Sunday’s line was a similar one to his first career start almost three months ago, only now it’s no longer a surprise but an expectation from Stiemsma. His last last seven games have also included an eight-point, eight-rebound effort in a two-point win over the Warriors and a hodgepodge of six points, five blocks, four rebounds, four steals and three assists in a 100-91 victory against the Bucks in his return to Wisconsin.

Coincidentally, while Stiemsma performed well in his home state, his Badgers were back in Boston, losing a dramatic 64-63 Sweet 16 matchup against Syracuse. Still, Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan found the time to leave some encouraging words behind for a player he may regret underutilizing.

“That Badger smell is still kind of hanging in the locker room,” said Stiemsma, later adding, “There’s a little note in my locker. It just says, ‘Coach Ryan was here. Best of luck.’”

Stiemsma’s journey from worldwide basketball journeyman to entrenched backup NBA center has been anything but lucky. He’s earned each opportunity, his confidence growing every step of the way — perhaps never more evident than when on multiple occasions Stiemsma gave referee Michael Smith the stink eye after a whistle.

“Some of these rookie calls, hopefully they’re going to start fading a little bit. It is what it is,” said Stiemsma, laughing. He added, “That’s part of the game, interaction with the officials. You’ve got to feel them out a little bit. You’re obviously not going to change their mind. I’ve yet to do that, to see them reverse a call.”

Just one more obstacle for the Stiemroller to iron out on his road to NBA legitimacy.

Hey, give the Pussi, umm I mean Canadiens credit they forced the Bruins into some stupid penalties and got a win out of it. Chara being lost for 17 minutes proved to be a killer. I don’t mind the fights but isn’t that why you have Thornton on the team? When you lose Lucic and Chara for long stretches it hurts. Oh well, I guess this balances out the win in Montreal earlier in the year and we’ll see who’s on top when the Bruins play the 3 games in hand they have.

  • buffchops

your in 1st place (for now) congrats BUT have some pride as a MAN and hockey player and stop diving like little girls you should be ashamed of yourselves

  • Guy LaFleur

Bruins, and their fans, having been calling out the Habs as a bunch of flopping pu$$ie$ for many years not just this year.

    • Mike

BC that’s what they are.. A bunch of diving homos. Been doing it for years.. Mike Ribiero, Kovalev, Subban, Gorges.. Every team in the league knows the Habs dive.. Everybody hates the HABS!!!

  • benchwarmer

nothing but dead baby seals from these club swinging hacks.

  • H Hanka

Claude I suppose the Bruins have never engaged in flopping. Give me a break and stop whining like a two-year-old. And try to keep your marginally talented goons in check, its hockey not WWE.

    • Bruinman86

Admittedly there have been a few flops by the Bruins over the years, but not even a 1/4 of what Montreal does.  They take to another level.  I can understand the occasional flop, but 4-7 a night?  Not cool. Shame on the league for letting them continue the practice in the face of the league and its fans. I bet if Montreal Fans had their way, they would want them to win the right way and play a more honorable game.

    • Bruins #1

Two points ahead and bruins have three games hand your not in first place for long. Pk Subban one if the best actors in the NHL.

  • Boston_Sports

Still flopping. That’s what the HABS have reduced themselves to. Acting is now a part of all sports and MONTREAL is the best at it.

  • Guy LaFleur

The Canadiens are a bunch of ballerina’s in tutuu’s. They won’t be in first place for long.

  • Billy OBrien

I liked Pacioretty when he was layed out on the Montreal ice when chara took his head against the pentaly box post. He wasn’t taking so much then.

  • dmm1047

They look like a bunch of ballet dancers.

  • Matty

sounds like a guy who still suffers from cooncussion like symptoms, after chara sent him flying two years ago.

  • Tim Thomas

Everyone just chill out! The Habs’ have not been relevant
    in like 20 years!

  • Fab4ever

Hockey players are the brightest athletes…and Max is a poster child for “stupid”…the Habs have played 3 more games and are ONLY 2 points above the B’s….my guess is the B’s would win 2 of those 3…and then Montreal would be in 2nd place..The advice I would give Max is to watch his back….the next time they meet, I’m pretty certain there will be some stealth-like actions taken upon him…what a fraud…I love it. Cannot wait to see the B’s kill these guys…and they will…

  • Chris D

I love the comments but common Claude. What about Marchand. Doing it for years. I love the stick in Prust’s face!!!

  • David McCarthy

I would usually say that I’m looking forward to seeing him get blown up next time they meet, but I just looked at that schedule and I have no idea how this team is going to be able to play intense, physical hockey with a game literally every other day for the rest of forever. I’m not sure I’ll even be able to maintain “focus” for all of them and all I have to do is sit there and get fatter. Maybe a game-day afternoon nap will help.

We might see some really ugly, sluggish games the rest of the way. Hopefully we get at least a few more glimpses of the Seg-Berg-March brilliance of the other night cuz that was as good as it gets.

  • Afam

Ha Ha. Very Funny Pac. Not

  • DJKuulA

I think Maxie is confusing jealousy with frustration. You know, what happens when instead of going on a 4-minute power play, your captain gets taken off the ice for 17 minutes.

Guess why you’re in first place today, Maxie. You think that little officiating screwup had anything to do with it?

  • Scott Enos

Im not sure why they are trying to hide it. U can tell after a period that they embellish everything. And yes ur in first by two points and have played three more games. I really wish refs would start calling embellishment penalties cause it drives me crazy. Take the hit like a man and move on.

  • jimbozz59

that lose means nothing, the bruins will make them pay next time and we’ll see whose in first place then

  • Alfred Sneade

Well, Pacioretti, you oughta know abut cheap shots!!

  • Mike

LOL Habs have like 4 games in hand.. You really got a quality education at a new england prep school huh Max? Sure the B’s are jealous of your last place finish last year, knocking you out in 2011 en route to the Cup!!! Worst sports city on the planet = Montreal.. Ps MAx must still be concussed from almost dying a few years ago.

  • joe

all i have to say to you guys is mike milbury. he put all you people complaining about embelleshing and how montreal dives soooo much but you have never watched a montreal game in your life. watch what mike milbury said to the other homer who cries like a baby and puts him in his place. i cant stop laughing at your comments it makes this victory evr sweeter thank you boston for looking for excuses to why you lost, its 100 years some things never change

  • David

Maybe Subban embellished a little bit but please tell me who else. Thats right no one else so quit your whining Julien and Marchant. You lost and man up.

    • Spitfie1064

A little, hahahahahaha you must be smoking what Pacioretty is toking, dude open your eyes, you hab loving fool.

    • Spitfie1064

If you breath on Subban he flies through the air like a girly man, just stop man, please.

  • NYCBruinsFan

Tough loss for the Bruins tonight.  After looking so good in the first quarter its hard to believe they let a three goal lead go and then lose in OT.  So many great things about this game (Marchand’s penalty shot, Chara and Dougie’s goals, Thortons fight) and then to lose.

Oh well, well take a point.  Get some rest and then on to the Leafs Thursday night.

  • Boring Media Hype

Bah…..this team is a house of cards that will come tumbling down

    • Fab4ever

      They’re not a “house of cards”…..far from it…..it’s a loss, albeit a disturbing loss but they ain’t folding….come on…

  • benchwarmer

    Rask is a risk.

  • Geetsolboy

Rask was awful in this game. I thought three of the four goals were soft. Still doesn’t take the rest of the team off the hook for allowing that three goal lead to evaporate. Brutal loss.

  • mike

Sometimes Julien’s defense first system proves to be their downfall can’t stop attacking after the first period. Need to do something with the 3rd line…Not a good game by Rask… That being said, beat Toronto and you have 3-4 games in hand on Montreal..

  • Nemo

Rask allows too many rebounds and loose pucks.  It’s like he’s fighting it all of this time.  Too bad they couldn’t afford to keep Benny on the third line.  Kelly and Peverley don’t seem as effective.

  • Jscmith

Very disappointing.  Rask was not real sharp, the third line is not productive at all …again, and where has the Krecji lines intensity gone.  They used to dominate after a goal against or killing a penalty.  The second line is the only line producing as of late.  Very bad loss blowing another third period lead.

  • AcieEarl

I was at the game and in the 1st period, they had the crowd out of it.   They were dominating the game.  In the 2nd and 3rd periods, they looked flat.  Like they were sitting on a 3-goal lead and Washington stepped it up.  They have dangerous players on that team and when they put it together, they can play well as they showed.

I think the B’s will be players at the deadline for some O help, possibly Iginla or Brassard

  • Christophercarey92

Just curious, does Marchand get a power play goal or a short handed  goal??

    • http://twitter.com/actiontoyxpress ATX

      it was a sh goal

  • Chappy

The referring at the NHL level is a joke.  They added a 2nd referee because the game is so fast – has that helped?  I say no – now they seem to wait for the other guy to make the call.  The 3 most important things in referring are location, location, and location……2 guys to see the entire sheet should be plenty – they all need to be more consistent regardless of the score or period – grow a set and make the call that needs to be made.  Whether it’s hooking or diving — make the friggin’ call!!!

  • H Bouley

Lets see…the Bruins are 14-3 this year and Claud cant understand why they can’t win every game they play.
Maybe thinking 48-0 would be par for the course. :)

    • learnTOtype

you realize this comment does not make any sense right?

  • Troll Hunter

At least “Titletown” can now sleep well. Or, he will have to find something/someone else to complain about….

    • Titletown1

Finally. You have to feel for Peverley and Kelly; they were shorthanded every time that line hit the ice.

If pointing out the reality that number 48 didn’t belong in the NHL is “complaining”, so be it. Number 48 was horrible. If it wasn’t for his last name he’d be running a car wash in Kamloops.

  • ILoveHockey

Failed experiment, it happens. I can’t imagine the pressure on that kid with Ray being his dad, that can’t be easy- hopefully he ends up back in Providence, I’ll enjoy watching him there

    • Fab4ever

Well said….it’s tough to follow in the footsteps of a genuine great…look at Larry Bird’s kid…he’s all messed up..John Lennon? Sean Lennon?……this might also be the first step in making additional moves…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Fred-Ganczar/100001754564386 Fred Ganczar

Notice why the P-Bruins pp suddenly got good? When Bourque went up.

      • ILoveHockey

really? bourgue is a detriment to AHL teams now, get a clue

  • ILoveHockey

Safe to say Chiarelli has a move in mind to bring someone else in- be interesting if they can bring in someone that will click with Kelly and Peverely to make that line more of a threat

  • http://twitter.com/Patsfan002 Paul Marinoni

I disagree with this big time. I have watched every Bruins game and I can say he really pushes the pace when he is out there. We need quick skaters Marchand & Seguin are the only other guys we got at his speed.

    • ILoveHockey

speed is great when paired with skill- not sure Chris falls into that catagory. I would say you left out Paille in the speed dept.

      • Uncle Buck

They gave the kid a very generous shot.  No question the speed is there, but it doesn’t translate at the NHL level.  He got caught back a lot and the line was covering for him back checking and in the defensive end.  He may catch on somewhere but I didn’t see much “touch” around the net.

        • ILoveHockey

I agree with the move also- I don’t think he will be much more than a fill in NHLer- mostly AHL talent, but some of the folks on here want to pin Kelly and Peverley solely on him- not sure I agree with that, I think they are both having bad years combined with the fact that they played a little over their level before this year.

  • Old Time Hockey

Who’s his replacement? Don’t tell me it’s Pandolfo

    • ILoveHockey

short term, I would hope. I would guess there will be a trade announced soon

  • Backfromthedepths

he tried hard, but just couldnt cut it. best of luck to him.

  • Riche

if he catches on with another team and they win the cup we can have a parade for him like his father-another great frickin idea by Mumbles!

  • Zadam12

did the b’s give up pouliot for this guy?? pouliot was the sheeet last year!

  • jcbruinsfan

It was an easy call.  He didn’t stand a chance the way that line has been playing, whether it was the poor chemistry, lack of talent, or just in a slump.  That line has been much better in the past, and needs to start scoring and stop giving up goals for this team to keep winning.  Any idea when Caron may be ready.  He was a better forechecker with better size than Bourque.

  • BoKnowsHockey

The kid has some offensive talent, but his head is obviously in the wrong place right now.  Hope he ends up in Providence.  There is no reason to give up on him yet.

    • Titletown1

Offensive talent? Exactly one goal and three assists in 20 games, to include some PP time, and a -6 for his plus/minus. He may have been an offensive talent at BU and in the AHL, but it hasn’t translated in the bigs.

No reason to give up on him “yet?” Seven years in the minors; I think it’s time to pull the plug.

      • ILoveHockey

although i don’t disagree with your accessment of him being sent to the minors- he did have the best plus minus on that line!

  • Jimmy Freeze

Unfortuantely, this kid’s taking the fall for the other 2 cardboard cutouts on that line…but, Chiarelli can’t waive those guys because he just gave them big contracts.  Those 2 have had more defensive whiffs in key situations than Carl Crawford.

    No more excuses now, boys!

  • Mr. Peanut

His really close to getting it just more time

  • Jacques LeCoq Grande

He is NOT an NHL Level Player. If his last name was “Pork”, he never would have played here…

  • http://www.facebook.com/wwh.hhw Wwh Hhw
  • Bruinman86

Exactly. Besides, it’s a Regular season game.  Throw in the fact the Habs had lost 7 straight regular season games against the B’s before Sunday.  IF they want to celebrate it like their Stanley Cup, let em.  Next game should be fun.

  • JR Liwanag

I am guessing bath salts from diving in their tubs!

  • JR Liwanag

As a Briuns fan that makes me sick. So I can only imagine how sick it makes u to watch all those Montreal Canadien games!

  • Fab4ever

Brutal….they were killing them in the first period…just skating rings around them, hitting..then they morphed into a college team…I don’t get it….somebody needs to get vocal in the clubhouse…they play the Leafs next..they ain’t the Rangers but….

  • Troll Hunter

Their offense is just so hard to get a grasp on. They start off like a house of fire and don’t score the rest of the game. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again you just can’t keep winning 2-1 or 3-2 games. They need another proven goal scorer they can stick on that second or third line.

  • Fab4ever

I agree….and I still believe they’ll be players come the deadline….they need help on that power play, period…we know that….

  • Bruinman86

There have been a few holes in the defense this year.  Neither Boychuk or Ferrence have been great so far. Hamilton has been a little up and down – to be expected as a 19 year old rookie.  Defensive mistakes stand out even more when the offense struggles to score.  So packaging a few of the guys plus maybe a David Krejci might score them the necessary players needed to improve this team.

  • kb

Pacioretty has been married  for a year, so nope.

    whats his name? lol
