Irish Coffee: Doc Rivers molds Celtics bench … again 03.29.12 at 2:23 pm ET
By

This version of the Celtics bench is somewhere between Version 3.0 and 893.7. I know because I’ve written each time Doc Rivers molds a different group into form, only to have that unit dismantled by injuries.

At the start of training camp, most expected Brandon Bass, Keyon Dooling, Jeff Green and Chris Wilcox to fill out the 2011-12 Celtics nine-man rotation. Along the way, injuries to Dooling (knee, hip), Green (heart), Wilcox (heart) and Jermaine O’Neal (knee, wrist) forced Bass into the starting lineup and left a rookie (Greg Stiemsma), a sophomore (Avery Bradley) and a guy who cleared waivers (Mickael Pietrus) to fill out the reserve unit.

Sprinkle in a way-past-his-prime Sasha Pavlovic, a guy coming off spinal surgery (Marquis Daniels), two more rookies (JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore) and a little bit of Ryan Hollins, and you’d expect a big old bowl of poop soup that might lead Padma Lakshmi to ask Danny Ainge to kindly, “Please pack your knives and go.”

Somehow, someway, Rivers & Co. are making it work … again. Of course, it helps the veteran core of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo and — save for a pair of ankle sprains — Ray Allen has remained intact. Those guys can make a lot of players look better, but they also set an example that leads them to play better.

Avery Bradley, Keyon Dooling and JaJuan Johnson are all trying to find their niches on the Celtics bench. (AP)

“I can’t ask a teammate to do something and look in himself if I’m not looking in myself,” said Garnett. “I’m every bit of the word of a true leader — not by the words that come out of my mouth, but by example. That’s just me.”

Same goes for Pierce and Allen. Even Rondo has slipped into that role as a mentor to Bradley this season.

“I consider him kind of a young guy, and I try to take him under my wing and give him as much as advice as possible, but I don’t want to try to act like I’m this vet or anything,” said Rondo. “It’s just that whenever he needs me to shed some advice, I give it to him.”

That allows wins like Wednesday’s over the Jazz to happen. The Celtics watched an 18-point advantage shrink to five, entered the fourth quarter with a lineup of Bradley, Dooling, Garnett, Pavlovic and Stiemsma, witnessed the lead evaporate entirely at 66-66 a minute into the fourth quarter — and nobody panicked, not even Rivers.

As Rivers explained afterward, “Really who I thought won the game is our bench.”

Even with a chance to tie the 76ers for first place in the Atlantic Division on the line, the Celtics coach didn’t rush Pierce or Rondo back into the lineup in hopes of salvaging a win before the calendar turns to April and the schedule features playoff contender after playoff contender.

Instead, a Dooling 3-pointer broke the tie, Garnett drained a fadeaway jumper and Bradley knocked down a pair of free throws to stretch the lead back to seven. The Jazz sliced that margin back to three, but another Dooling jump shot and a Pavlovic trey opened it back up to eight midway through the fourth quarter — just in time for the starters to put the finishing touches on the team’s third straight victory.

“It really made it easy for us to close the game once we got back into the game,” said Pierce.

“We have a team that is really about us,” added Dooling. “What we do is build habits and build for the playoffs. This team is made for the playoffs. It’s built for grind-it-out type games, and that’s usually how playoff games are. We’re building our habits, guys are executing their roles and we’re starting to get better.”

Bradley has been the biggest revelation for the Celtics. He’s filled in for both Rondo and Allen, compiling a 9-4 record as a starter, and off the bench he’s built a reputation as one of the league’s best defenders as well as an explosive offensive weapon capable of beating opponents down the floor or on back cuts to the hoop.

“Defense is what I take pride in,” he said. “I go in every game, and I try to play as hard as I can on the defensive end. I try to bring the intensity in the first group and the second group, and that’s what I try to do every single night. That’s what Doc wants me to do, so that’s what I do.”

Even Bradley’s much maligned jump shot has seen significant improvement in recent months. “I’m not out there lost,” he said. “I’m a lot more confident. I don’t second guess anything. I just go out there and play my game.”

“He’s getting opportunity, and I hope he’s feeling like that,” added Garnett. “We’ll be looking for him. He’s a big part of our offense, a big part of our defensive schemes. The kid has worked his behind off to get where he’s at, and I’m happy for him.”

Conversely, it hasn’t been about confidence for Dooling, but rather health. He averaged 9.0 points and 40 percent 3-point shooting in the first nine games of the season before suffering successive knee and hip injuries. It’s taken more than two months for him to play his way back into the rotation, but he’s averaged 4.8 points, 1.6 assists and 1.4 rebounds in 16.8 minutes over his last five games.

“I’m starting to feel better,” said Dooling, who totaled seven points (3-6 FG), three assists and two rebounds against the Jazz. “At the end of the day, everybody’s banged up at this time of the year, but I think I’m starting to earn Doc’s trust a little bit more and starting to really find my niche and my role on this team. So, I want to continue to try to execute it every night.”

We’ve already covered Stiemsma’s development this season at length, and should Pietrus regain form as the 3-point and defensive specialist he was prior to his concussion, Rivers might actually have the depth he’s craved in recent years, even if the bench doesn’t look like it was supposed to at season’s start.

“They’ve earned it,” said Garnett. “You see these guys come in and put in the work. Young guys don’t even grind like this. They don’t even come in and work like this, so it’s good to see, man. It’s refreshing to be honest.”

“Before the season I thought we could [make a run in the playoffs], beginning of the season I wasn’t so sure, and now I do,” Rivers told Dennis & Callahan on Thursday morning. “And again, for us — and actually for everyone — you have to be healthy. You just have to be healthy. I do think we all forget the one thing that is good is we rest more in the playoffs. In the playoffs the games are harder, but the rest is more.”

Just imagine how rested the Celtics could be if the bench continues to sustain leads like they did on Wednesday.

I went to Juco with Mack Herron, he liked his pot, but he was also a hell of a nice guyand a great running back.  It’s just sad the way we treat addiction in this country.

  • NYCBruinsFan

Great Saturday Matinee and showing by the B’s this afternoon against Philly.  Nice PP and good to see Caron in there with a game early assist.  Go TB Lighting tonight against the Habs.

    • Fab4ever

It was a fairly easy game for them….and despite that, they displayed why they’re a true power…I expected a win…a solid defensive showing….and, dare I say, a power play goal.

  • NYCBruinsFan

Also awesome to see Tuukka get a SO.

  • Uncle Buck

Solid all around win at home, as it should be.  Although, the Flyers played most of the game with what appeared to be a large, collective hangover.  Lethargic showing at best.  Keep it rollin B’s.

  • David McCarthy

    Save, Seggy!

A very good win and the defense looked a lot better. A couple of concerns about the offense still bother me. They score 3 in the first and seem to lay back the rest of the game. I know they had a few good chances but they need to bury these teams and not let them hang around for the rest of the game like they did in Washington. Philly also caused the Bruins some turnovers in their own end and bottled them up by taking away the high board pass they always use to break out of their own zone. Montreal and a couple of other clubs have been taking away that pass lately as well. I would love Chiarelli to add another puck moving defenseman that can play the power play and a scorer to play on that third line.

  • NYCBruinsFan

Good come from behind win. Tuukka gets the credit for a great game in net. Nice seeing Krejci getting the game winning shoot out goal tonight. Hopefully that quiets any trade thoughts or rummors.

    • Fab4ever

Yes…nice win, solid 2 periods of hockey…coming out “flat” was an understatement…..Losing Kelly is tough…but that’s the way it is…injuries happen…now lets see what the B’s do at the deadline….

  • Troll Hunter

Nice road win and an even bigger test in less than 24hrs….

  • Xander Bogaerts

No reason to trade Krejci as he has been good all year with the exception of a couple of bad games just like everyone else. His linemates are another story. Both Lucic and especially Horton have been terrible the last couple of weeks. I would love to see the Bruins pick up a player with some skill, hockey sense & speed to play with Krejci. Horton is just not getting it done. The guy handles the puck like a grenade & takes forever to decide what to do when he do have the puck on his stick.

    • rogerroger

I’d honestly like to see Lucic go. He’s got more penalty minutes than should ever be considered acceptable and he doesn’t produce like a first-liner (and never really has). He’s certainly not the “next Cam Neely” that he was billed to be 2 or 3 years ago. If not for Krejci neither of those two get much done so far this year. He’s one of the best, and most consistent, on the team.

      • glenn88

Roger, Lucic racks up high PIMs for a first liner because he fights.  He didn’t rack up penalties with lazy hooking penalties.   You also undervalue what he brings to a top line in terms of checking, going in the corners, winning pucks, operating in front of the net, moving the puck through the neutral zone and the havic he creates for defensemen.  There is a reason opposing teams hate playing him.

With Calgary tanking their final road trip game last night they should be  looking to dump of players.  Wonder if Peter swallows one of those LW contracts of either Cammalleri or Tanguay, because the asking price shouldn’t be that high as the Flames want those contracts off the books.

  • Great Win

They seem to allow more goals in less than two minutes at the start of a period. They also score a lot of goals with less than two minutes in a period. Great win and hope Kelley is OK. Keeping pace with games in hand and this is a tough place to play.

  • Chris Nilan

If Kelly is going to be out for a while, then Seguin should play center, and this is what the lines should be…

    Lucic Krejci Perry
    Marchand Bergeron Peverly
    Soderberg Seguin Horton
    Paille Campbell Thornton

    • mike

juts plug Soderberg into Kelly’s spot-the guy is a center..

    • yazorrbird

No way you slide Seguin to the 3rd line!!!!

  • mike

Hope Kelly is ok but good opportunity to bring Soderberg who is a center…

  • ILoveHockey

“The Senators could have made it 3-0 with just over three minutes to go in the third period”, Sorry Bean they couldn’t first period maybe?

    • rogerroger

Bean is brutal. Can’t write. Knows nothing about hockey.

  • Uncle Buck

And yet another 2 points on the road.  I’m guessing Kelly is done based on what we could see.  Two goals from the 4th line is pretty nice.  I thought the little toe drag spin-o-rama move in the SO was bush league. I thought I was back on the pond on Sunday afternoon. As if the SO isn’t enough of a joke….Am I alone in thinking the camera positions and angles combined with the sound quality/acoustics were pretty impressive last night?  NESN and the Bruins should consider trying to duplicate that at home.  Much better broadcast.

  • Claude’s Toupee

Way too early to rule Kelly out. It’s probably nothing more than a deep bone bruise. His knee and surrounding tendons are likely very bruised and will take a few days for the swelling to go down. I’d expect to see him back against Washington/Pittsburgh.

  • Marcosautoservice

why is there such a love fest with Lucic?????? I now live in florida so I don’t get to see as many games as I would like, but everytime I do see a game, i can’t stand to watch him. First that “#1″ line seems to be on the ice for 75% of the other teams goals… that may be a big #, but every goal that he is on the ice all you see is him coast into the play a minute late….. The breakaway goal against Ottawa is a prime example. One min into the game and Luc is coasting out of the offensive zone while the play goes the other way, then just coasts into the defensive zone. if you watch that play I don’t think he took a stride once, just coasting…. i like his toughness but it bothers me to always see him coasting out there!!!!

  • Fab4ever

A trend is beginning to form…they are struggling in the 3rd period…up again and poof, gone. No time to panic but this is disturbing….reminds me very much of last season….

    • Titletown1

Completely agree. They puked up a three goal lead to Montreal and they spit up all over themselves tonight. It’s like they get too comfortable just holding on instead of getting the next goal which would put the game on ice (no pun). This is the third time they’ve done this already….

    • Bruinman86

The lack of offensive creativity and finishing is a concern for me.  They need some scoring punch to give them some breathing room. I’m all for trading Krejci for a sniper.

    • Troll Hunter

The trend is whenever they get a two goal lead they start laying back and stop attacking and play that trap. It sometimes works with a goaltender like Tuukka but you just knew tonight Anton was going to cough it up. Not his fault as the turnovers and the failure to clear their own zone reared its ugly head again tonight. I swear Julien gets fined if the Bruins score more than 3 goals or win by more than a goal or at most two. I can cut them a little slack with the back to backs coming off that OT game in Ottawa but man that was frustrating.

      • Fab4ever

I am with you…I think I heard or read that the B’s have not had a 4 goal margin all season…something to that effect….OK, I understand it was the back end of the back-to-back games and it was the 3rd period but they are losing their legs, that isn’t good. Like I said, I’m not going to panic…I’ll sit back…they still have 2 games on the Habs who play NOBODY until the come back to Boston late this month…that will be the biggest game of the year…

  • Titletown1

Wow, where to begin with this one? They played like champs for the first 20 minutes and then tried to hold on for dear life after that. Khudobin played out of his mind for 55 minutes. Welcome to the 48 game sprint, B’s.

But once again, this game points out the need for a goal scorer. You can’t score just two goals against a team like Pittsburgh and expect to hold on for a win.

BTW, anyone seen Milan Lucic lately? Did he dress tonight? Or the last game? Or the game before that?

    • Mole

another no show for cementhead…..he could be outta here with a big trade before the deadline…

  • Boring Media Hype

Bah…too many of these type of losses…..not a team I’ll waste my time following any longer

  • Troll Hunter

Might be the worst loss of the season considering they at least got a point after blowing the lead in Washington and you could blame Chara being in the box against Montreal. You just can’t keep trying to win games 3-2 every single night. Chiarelli needs to get at least another decent scorer as Horton looks old and slow. He might take the longest to get a shot off(usually missing the net) than anyone else I have ever seen. Bad, bad loss and they needed to at least get a point after pitching a shutout for almost 54 minutes. BTW how many terrible giveaways have you seen by the Bruins in the last 4 or 5 games? I know they had a nice little points streak going but man they have turned the puck over way too much lately.

  • po’d

No, milk carton, I have not seen our ‘first’ line!!!

  • Xander Bogaerts

I would trade Nathan Horton tomorrow if the Bs could find someone who has skill to play on a line with Krejci. Horton’s decision making & puck carrying skills are absolutely terrible. He is singlehandedly bringing down the Krejci line. Horton has been horrible for a month now. I would sit him and try to light a fire under him for his careless play. Lucic hasn’t been much better.

  • http://twitter.com/bruinsinbc steve grande

i wonder what juliens excuses are this time..get rid of peverly and horton asap..they cant even get the puck out of there own end of the ice…they wont trade anyone and they will be out in the first round again…..im done with this team

  • NYCBruinsFan

What a terrible display.  You could watch it all happen as they skated in slow motion at the end of the 3rd peroid giving them one opportunity and give away after another.  No excuse for dropping these 2 adn 3 goal leads in the 3rd.

  • NYCBruinsFan

    And after killing off a 5 on 3 for over a minute…..

  • Gray

I still question the selection of which goal tender to face which team ~

  • Chappy

Too many turnovers in their own end, not enough punch from Lucic-Horton-Krejci…….I would have to think Horton is gone in a trade soon – he is a marginal skater with no fire and a big $$$ coming up.  At least on occasion Lucic gets a burr in his saddle…

  • Bruinsfan43

They out played the Pens for half the game and then seemed content to just hold onto the lead.  You could see that loss coming by the beginning of the third.  Khudobin stood on his head to keep them in it, but no legs left for the rest of the team.  I am not impressed with either Horton’s play or Krecji.  Krecji is not a first line center in my opinion, he does not look to score enough and is always looking to pass, which every team in the league has figured out.  Horton and company (Peverly, Lucic, Seguin) miss the net on too many open shots!  I am OK with trading Krecji as well.

  • MAS

AGAIN -2 RATING FOR LUC… BOTH GOALS JUST WATCHING THE PLAY COASTING IN ..NO DEFENSIVE HELP, I KNOW THE THIRD GOAL WAS A BAD PASS FROM SEIN BUT LUC IS STANDING FLAT FOOTED AT THE BLUE LINE THEN DOES NOT EVEN TRY TO BACK CHECK… CAN’T STAND TO WATCH LUC PLAY..

  • Kbksi

Have been folloiwng the B’s for 40 years…I can’t understand it, how is Chara rated as one of the Top 5 defensemen in the league? I like him, he’s good, at times very good but at times very average.. is the rest of the defensemen in the league that bad that he is Norris material? He is not, by any stretch of the imagination, what Ray Bourque was.

    • Fab4ever

Chara was the best player on the ice for 2 periods last night…no, he’s not Ray, not close but last night cannot be blamed on Z….

  • Kodiakdawg

In 2 of the 3 third period meltdowns, the Bruins could have “put the dagger in the heart of the opponent” – Seguin on a 2 on 1 vs Caps, and Horton sent clear in after a face-off win – and misses the net from 6 feet out…..both inexcusable as more than likely a goal in those situations seals a win….. BUT … both missed and eventuall the D gets worn out and makes mistakes.

Cant just lay back and let them take it to you – have to play your game.

  • Bruinman86

That sucks.  Kelly is a hard worker and energy guy.  I’ll be real curious to see what kinds of moves the team makes at the trade deadline…

    • ILoveHockey

the trade need just went from a benefit to a necessity, which made every other teams price go up. Good thing they have a lot of cap space

      • Bruinman86

yeah, no kidding. Too bad Savard cant play anymore. His skills would seriously boost that offense. So who do you think they go after?

        • ILoveHockey

Tough to say, I haven’t heard of a ton of teams that feel they are out of it and are sellers, You would think Calgary would be an Iginla would be an obvious choice. O heard some rumor about Ottawa trading Alfredsson but I don’t see that happening. Also heard talk of Crowe from the Sharks but I don’t know enough about him to know what kind of fit he would be.

One thing for sure they need 1 or 2 decent players- and quick

          • Bruinman86

With a short season like this, I would think that it wouldn’t be long before more teams are out of it.

    • Uncle Buck

As soon as I saw that replay I had a bad feeling.  He does play some key roles on that team and he was a big part of the Cup run. They will miss him more than most people realize.

      • Bruinman86

They will miss him no doubt. Any bets on a trade or 2?

  • Colby010

trade deadline will be interesting! They need someone.  the luc-krej-horton  line is awful!!!!!

  • Schwank

send him to Gronks Dr….put a plate in and he’ll be back in 6 weeks.

  • Masandberg10

    Iginla!

  • Nickt3

They made him travel with a broken leg.

  • kevin arel

They need a scorer now kelly is a great face off man and penalty killer…time to make some moves

  • NYCBruinsFan

Hate to see Kelly get hurt like that.  It’s going to hurt not having him around the rest of the season.

  • Innovator

Mmmmmm,Soderberg anyone? This may sound crappy, but for the 4 million that Horton makes, and the 3 million that Kelly makes, boy we could turn those two into a nice 6 million dollar all star and a good kid thru the draft or from a previous draft in our lineup for next year…

  • Kheebs

Just saw this guy play in Springfield the other night and he lit the falcons up
