Magic drama and the Celtics postseason 04.05.12 at 3:35 pm ET

Dwight Howard and Stan Van Gundy may not be together much longer. (AP)

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy blew the lid off the simmering tensions in Orlando on Thursday when he told reporters that management had informed him that star center Dwight Howard wanted him fired at the end of the year.

Or as Howard Beck from the New York Times put it:

“A well-placed Orlando Magic source claims Dwight Howard has asked the team to fire Coach Stan Van Gundy. The well-placed source? Stan Van Gundy.”

What followed was a revealing, and then awkward press conference. “It’s 12:02 right now,” Van Gundy said. “If they want to fire me at 12:05 I’ll go home and find something to do. I’ll have a good day.”

Then Howard appeared, apparently unaware of what his coach had just said. Some awkward small talk ensues and it’s clear that Howard still doesn’t know what just happened, setting up the walk-off line as Van Gundy throws Howard to the wolves: “Are you guys done with me? You can talk to him now.”

Various players have already spoken on, and off the record, in support for Van Gundy yielding a giant mess for a team that as of last week seemed fairly secure in the third spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. But the Magic have lost four straight and been passed by the Pacers in the standings.

That leaves them in fifth for the moment, opposite of where the Celtics are sitting as the fourth seed. (An important note: Winning the Atlantic Division doesn’t guarantee homecourt advantage in the first round. If the fifth seed has a better record — like the Magic do know — they would get homecourt in the series.)

Regardless, the Celtics playoff positioning is a tenuous thing. They have a game and a half lead on the slumping Sixers for first place in the Atlantic Division, but also are in the middle of facing their toughest stretch of games against quality opponents. They could finish anywhere from third to seventh.

Here’s how the standings look at the moment:

3. Indiana 33-21
4. Boston 30-23
5. Orlando 32-22
6. Atlanta 32-23
7. Philly 29-25

Here’s how they look simply by record with Games Behind noted after record:

Indiana 33-21   –
Orlando 32-22   1
Atlanta 32-23   1.5
Boston 30-23   2
Philly 29-25     3.5

The Celtics play all four of those teams once and the Hawks twice, which will set up a frantic race to the finish.

Rask was in net, that’s what went wrong. I really hope that Chiarelli doesn’t trade Subban, because their goaltending situation is very shaky.

    • NE1935

Chara scored the tying goal not Rask. Tough with puck leaving yard however third period collapses are a real bad sign. 5 goals at home should be an easy win.

  • Gman

How about the refs going wrong, again, with the B’s?? Chara gets an elbowing penalty for defending himself, Marchand gets called for a high stick when his stick pushed Subban to the ice instead of hitting him, the refs can’t even count as they didn’t call Montreal for too many men on the ice right before their third goal and that bogus call on Johnson for delay of game for deflecting a puck in the air out of play. Not to mention when Paille got flattened right over the Canadiens’ blue line and no call. This was another embarassment to the NHL with the Canadiens’ diving and flopping and the refs siding with them. I’ve seen better officiating in the NBA!!

      Agreed!

  • Geetsolboy

Iginla was scratched from lineup tonight, he’s been traded.

  • Cambee

Ill call a spade a spade on this. The refs were horrible! I almost want to say they fixed the game.
The Habs 5th goal should never have counted. Gallagher Cross Check Seid 10 ft away from him!!!!
The Chara penatly might have been the worse! The midget put his head into chara while cross checking him!
Still they look much better and lost more cause of the officials than anything else.

  • Fab4ever

One of my Bruin buddies is going t o have to talk me down off the ledge because after what I just watched, this ain’t championship caliber. The Habs are good. Real good. I really don’t to hear about “what coulda been if….”..there’s a pattern here and it spells “failure”

  • stevied

Subban went end to end at least 3 times last night,,this Bruins team is a mess,,they dont check,,the power play still sucks,,and lucic and krejci are lost out there,,all this team does is turn the puck over,,they are the sloppiest Bruins team I ever seen and I have been watching them since 1969!!!
