Why this was no ordinary division championship for the Celtics 04.19.12 at 10:19 am ET
By

The Celtics have won the Atlantic Division in all five years of the new “Big 3″.

And it’s a well known fact that they don’t commemorate division titles with banners up above.

But when the Celtics clinched the division Wednesday with a 102-98 win over the Magic, there was reason to step back and take a bow.

It was how they got there that was impressive, especially to their coach Doc Rivers. He acknowledged the significance of the turnaround by the team, which played without the injured Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen and Mickael Pietrus.

“Yeah, it does, I mean [something],” Rivers said. “It’s funny we were kidding in the locker room because I really – I usually, honestly, don’t say much about it – I don’t know if I’ve ever congratulated the team for winning one,” But I did tell them, I said, ‘Guys, I know it’s not a big deal to us – and it isn’t because we’re not in this to win divisions – but, we were two games under .500 at All-Star break and the fact that you did it and did it this early I think is very impressive.’ And it was.”

Captain Paul Pierce led the Celtics Wednesday with 29 points and a career-high 14 assists. Pierce reminded everyone afterward of what the final goal is for the team, a team that was two games under .500 at the All-Star break.

“I’m not about to go pop champagne bottles or anything like that,” Pierce said. “I know they do in baseball. I mean, it is a good accomplishment. The guys should recognize where we came from to what we are today. It’s a good accomplishment I guess. But all we care about around here is a championship banner. I guess it’s just a step towards the journey we are trying to go towards.”

But Kevin Garnett took the chance to take a swipe at the naysayers who wrote the team off, giving them no chance of winning another division, let alone championship.

“You guys called us old, over,” Garnett said. “I heard some of your pathetic articles and some of your lousy announcers [predictions]. It’s a pity. Obviously you don’t know what drives us. We thank y’all for those articles, appreciate it because it lit a fire under. One of the hardest things I’ve always said in this league is to create chemistry.”

Maybe he could center Marchand and Seguin..or then again maybe Claude will stick him on the 4th line…

    Please get this done soon!

That away Claude a defensive urgency for the next to weeks good god that must be our problem. Amazing statements after the first and only route game of the season. Claude’s services may be needed else where next season. Rask and Anton are capable of making saves lets try some offense for the final two weeks!!!

What is the scouting report on this guy? He is 27 and not in the NHL yet? What can we expect him to bring to the table?

    • Spheniscus

Bruins have been trying to convince him to come over since they acquired him, but he was happy to stay in Europe. As recently as this summer, Neely said he wasn’t sure that Soderberg would ever play in the U.S., not because he wasn’t good enough, but because he didn’t want to leave Sweden.

But after dominating the Swedish league this year, he apparently changed his mind. If he is any good, this is big for the B’s.

he’s probably going to wind up on the 3rd or 4th until they see what he can do. He’s a fantastic player in SEL, but he’s never played in an NHL game, so it depends on how the transition goes

  • Steve_in_MA

Three hurdles remain, two of which are administrative. First, the B’s need to make a buyout deal with Linkoping, and then the Swedish league has to approve it. Finally, he has to get a work visa. I could see another week slipping away before this guy is donning the black ‘n gold.

  • fab4ever

No kidding. Keep up the good work Glenn….since I know nothing about this guy, what’s the story? Puck handler? Shot blocker? Speed?

  • Deano42

Does the SEL play on an olympic size ice sheet or an NHl size ice sheet?

If he is 6’3″, a two way player, and can contribute right away then he should slide into Bergeron’s spot for the time being. You think he is good enough to center Marchand and Seguin?

  • fab4ever

Well, this came out of nowhere….hopefully this deal can be done soon, get him acclimated to the big show and move on….sounds like he can help immediately….

  • glenn88

Hey, this guy is the yetti legend from Sweden! I think a realistic expectation is 3rd line and contributor on the PP. Nobody should expect Forsberg despite the stories. He is 27 and had an eye injury early in his career that supposedly stunted his development and caused him to stay in Sweden. This is the reason for the late NHL arrival.

Also, I believe all Swedish rinks are Olympic surface, because the entire system is based on their national teams. So you have another adjustment to factor in, but lack of size is not the issue.

  • fab4ever

Sweden is indeed Olympic size…for their leagues…but not all levels…many years ago, our college team did some exhibition over there against a Swedish college team and they played on a pro rink which was Olympic dimensions…

  • Deano42

I saw the highlights of this guy and he looks like he could be a major upgrade for the third line wing. He certainly has a mean streak and that cross check to the guy’s face was just viscous enough to get me intrigued.

If Bergeron is back soon and we have a third line of Jagr or Horton, Kelly and this Soderberg (The one eyed swede) then we should be able to compete with Pittsburgh and Montreal, I am not sure about Chicago but if we make it that far anything is possible. Sounds like Bergeron will be back soon, which is the most important thing for this team.

Transitioning from olympic ice to nhl ice would be difficult especially at the center position. However, if he goes from center on olympic ice to wing on NHl ice, it should lessen the transition greatly as he will be playing in more space on the wing.
