Irish Coffee: Banged-up Celtics ‘hoping everybody is’ 04.27.12 at 1:12 pm ET
By

He might not be a real doctor, but he must feel like one after all the injuries he’s seen in the past four months.

“We’ve got to be careful with them, even in the playoffs,” said Celtics head coach Doc Rivers. “It just doesn’t take much, it seems like, right now, for a guy to not be able to play the next night. So we have to be very careful.”

Take Paul Pierce as Exhibit A. The Celtics captain began this lockout-shortened regular season with a bone bruise in his right heel and ended it with a sprained big left toe. The original plan was to rest Pierce’s ailing feet for the final two games, but his desire to stay in rhythm won out, so Rivers played him 18 minutes on Tuesday and just 2:18 on Thursday before March’s Eastern Conference Player of the Month limped back to the locker room.

“He hurt it,” said Rivers, referencing the toe that led the C’s to list Pierce as likely unable to return. “That’s why he’s been sitting. And then he wanted to play. We’re not sure if it was the tape, or whatever, because when he wanted to come back, he just kept saying, ‘I just needed to get it loose.’ So we had a long discussion, because I had no interest in putting him back in, but he really wanted to play a couple minutes just to get up and down the floor.”

The Celtics dodged a bullet, as Pierce returned for the final 4:24 of the first half to score seven quick points and ease fans’ fears. The same can’t be said for Ray Allen, who missed his ninth straight game with bone spurs in his right ankle. On Thursday, Rivers dubbed him probable for Game 1 against the Hawks, but the Celtics announced via Twitter on Friday, “Allen will not practice today and his status for Game 1 on Sunday is still unknown.”

Then again, Pierce was improbable five minutes before returning Thursday and Kevin Garnett was probable days before missing the entire 2009 playoff run. Who knows? Rest did wonders for Garnett, Rajon Rondo and Mickael Pietrus, who showed no signs of their respective hip, back and knee injuries in the win over the Bucks.

  • Garnett (11 MIN, 4 PTS, 3 AST, 2 REB): “I feel really good. I’m looking forward to the playoffs.”
  • Pietrus (19.5 MIN, 9 PTS, 4-10 FG, 2 REB): “I was moving pretty well. Just trying to be Mickael Pietrus. I just try to get in, help my team the best way I can, try to get ready for the playoffs.”
  • Rondo (25 MIN, 15 AST, 4 STL, 0 PTS): “It’s fine. It’s as good as it’s going to get, I think.”

Two road games to start their first-round series against the Hawks is the downside of resting everyone down the stretch from Rondo to Greg Stiemsma, who stayed off the plantar fasciitis in his left foot and bone bruise in his right foot for a second straight game but has played through those injuries for at least a month. Should the Celtics have conceded home court advantage by playing a depleted roster in a 97-92 loss to the Hawks a week ago?

“Looking at Kevin, the way he ran [Thursday], I was happy with the choice,” said Rivers of the decision. “He looked like his legs were back, and so for me that answered the question.”

Count Pietrus among those whose injuries flared up as the result of this season’s hectic schedule. Rivers admitted playing him three nights in a row from April 13-15 was a mistake. The good news is the playoff schedule doesn’t even feature back-to-backs, let alone three games in three nights.

“I mean, listen, we’re banged up,” said Rivers. “I’m hoping everybody is.”

The Hawks certainly are. They’ll likely start the series without their top two centers in Al Horford (torn pectoral) and Zaza Pachulia (strained left foot). Even the Bulls — the C’s potential second-round opponent — have battled their share of injuries to Derrick Rose, Luol Deng and Richard Hamilton. Believe it or not, the Celtics might be one of the healthier teams entering the 2012 playoffs, a reflection on the oddities of a post-lockout season.

“I always wished to play for the Celtics,” said Pietrus. “Now I want to give them the best shot. I want to play hard for them to give them a chance to win the championship. And for myself, too. We have to stay focused on Celtics basketball, and that’s what we’ve been doing. I think we can do it. It’s wide open. It reminds me of ’98 when we went into a lockout and San Antonio won. Everything was open.”

Lucic gave his shirt to a first responder and the guy gave it back…

    • Troll Hunter

Hey idiot how about posting when/if the Rangers actually make the playoffs douch e.

    • fab4ever

You absolute Piece Of Sh it!!!!! To make light of anything that went on this week is beyond comprehension. Count on this douch e….I will hunt you down and get you off these pages…..there is ZERO room for that kind of comment…you wanna trash me, you wanna trash the B’s, fine. Go for it…you’ve crossed a very thin line awhole…

    • Uncle Buck

      Trolls lose. Always.

  • Titletown1

After reading Bean’s coverage of the B’s this whole year, I know he’s not that good of a writer and can come off as ridiculously homerish, but look at the two entries under “What went wrong for the Bruins.” One talks about injuries that happened last game and the other mentions Lucic’s return. So, that’s what went wrong for the B’s today? Horton and McQuaid were out? And Lucic returned? Huh? Neither accurately fits into a category that is supposed to describe what went wrong for the B’s in this game. Just horrible jibberish.

    • ILoveHockey

so a continued problem is not a problem for this game (injury)? If they had blown a 3rd period lead could he have listed that or because that had already happened in previous games is it off limits?
I have called out Bean plenty of times, but I think you are reaching.

  • Vacation Plans

Horty looks like a JOKE now… they didnt even fight they just swung eachother around and now Hortons hurt …. so funny he’s so soft… and McQuaid is a wanna be tough guy who is ALL talk. #teamstreetgang

  • jjimmydutch

cook has always played on the fringe and earlier this season he cut another player with his skates, not a mistake. And then went low on McQuids legs to hurt him. Well that is a simple call to put the troops out and take cook out of the lineup.

  • joe67

its like grow a set of balls

  • http://www.facebook.com/bob.shannon.73 Bob Shannon

The Bruins have not any leadership out on the ice….Giving the puck away constantly in the neutral zone….It really is time to sit some players to get a 3 or 4 day vacation…..What’s upsetting is the DMen can not handle the puck without giving it away…Or they successfully make a pass and the forwards give away….Who are the leaders out there on the ice…No one stepping up…It’s tough to see them getting by the Islanders or the Maple Leafs…..One period of decent play will not get you to the next round…..Peter Chiarelli, I would start seriously thinking about making a BLOCKBUSTER TRADE, like the one that brought Phil Esposito and others to the Bruins….Trade Up in the Draft and get yourself some talent ready to step in and start…Top10 talent would be a huge help and maybe 2014 Team could go all the way….Really I would sit out Line 1 for a three day stint, and so on…..None of these guys are sharp at all…This is not Bruins Hockey at all!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Bruinman86

I agree. The leadership has sucked this year. Unless they change their habits, this team will be one and done in the playoffs. Seems i get pissed off watching them every game as of late. Guess they need a makeover in the offseason.

      • Titletown1

B’man, I admire your optimism thinking that they can change their ways and still have a chance in the playoffs. I think it would be merciful to all of us if they are put out of their misery (and ours) in the first round so management can get on with the business of rebuilding this disaster…starting with the coach…followed by Lucic….followed by Horton…followed by……

        • Dinglepuss

With you on Lucic, the stupid penalties he took back when he was a good scorer drove me nuts so take away the scoring and well

Why Julien though? I don’t think this has anything to do with him being tuned out, this looks like a team being asked to play a lot of games in a short period that simply isn’t good enough.

          • Titletown1

They started off fine at the beginning of this 48 game sprint. Much of the psychological and physical preparation lies with the coach. I understand that some B’s (Lucic!) didn’t skate during the strike, but this team hit the wall 5 weeks ago. Claude’s defense first philosophy has proven a failure. Without TT standing on his head in 2011, the defense philosophy would have failed then too.
And yes, the players might have just tuned this guy out. Now we have the Boston Ballet of Jagr, Soderberg, and Krecji; completely goes against the Claude philosophy. That’s how desperate the B’s are now. I think he’s completely mishandled the development of Seguin and has actually set him back. It’s also looking like Chara is as old as Garnett; his best days are behind him.
They just need a complete face lift.

          • bench warmer

            Dead on.

        • NYCBruinsFan

All I can say is just look what Adam Oats has done for the Caps. I’m tired of hearing about the condensed schedule and how tired everyone is. Wish I had a job playing me millions a year to skate 20 minutes every other night.

        • Bruinman86

It’s either take charge, show some stones and kick butt or quietly fade into the sunset. Irritating team to watch.

    • NYCBruinsFan

I could not agree with you more Bob. This is not Bruin’s hockey! It’s so sad to watch them lose to these teams and watch such talent go to waste. Instead of the Big Bad Bruins, the should rename this 2013 team, the ‘just plain bad bruins’. It’s a wonder we are even in 2nd or 4th place.

  • bill

They suck like all the other Boston teams

    • Bill’s father

My son, please stop. I can’t keep covering for you. I bought you that trailer so you could stay off the streets and I got you the laptop so you could watch your cartoons..

    • phillip

LOL…………..Is this Mike from the Red Sox post……..lol. Same exact verbage.

      • Uncle Buck

        Same loser troll.

    • Uncle Buck

All it takes is a loss for the weak and feeble troll to reappear.

  • Dinglepuss

The tributes that Boston has been giving/receiving have started to be the only reason to turn them on anymore. Losses happen but Christ at least give me the impression you care

  • pauliespad

nice game loch….this is a contact sport, for your information

  • Shoe bottom

I agree with everyone. That Philly tribute was great. Lets get in the playoffs then I wish for luc, Horton, pev, to turn it on. I hope they get 3 points each a game. Then we off them for top value. It’s pretty clear to see they have been coasting into the playoffs which sucks for us fans cause we waited a half year while they were on strike what ever and then have basically been treated to street hockey effort.

  • BigArch

Jagr is sooo good. He can just move to any line and fit right in. How many goals has Chara scored for the other teams this month. I haven’t seen every game, but the ones I have… I count 3. each one a back breaker. Claude was hoping Chara would do the same in the slot on power plays. HA. Instead of pulling the goalie. “rest” the Captain.

  • Claude’s Toupee

The Bruins are fatigued! They’ve played 45 games since Jan. 19th. 11 players (Chara, Boychuk, Ference, Bergeron, Peverley, Seguin, Kelly, Seidenberg, Krejci, Rask, Khudobin) played abroad during the lockout. This team needs time to rest, heal and prepare for the playoffs.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bob.shannon.73 Bob Shannon

No morning skate, no meetings, no family, rent out an hotel and sleep without any interruptions…..

  • Bruinman86

    Khudobin was his only competition.

  • NYCBruinsFan

Paille also very deserving, but Dougie having a great first year season.

  • bruinsfan

    nice touch being a scratch

  • Uncle Buck

It’s frustrating. They have the talent and they have the experience. But I am not feeling (or seeing) the grit and meanness they need. And there are a lot of holes as well. No clue what happened with Lucic and Horton, but they are way off.

  • Bruinman86

I’m ready to make some serious changes to fix the problems. I don’t like how the team is constructed, nor did I like it in the Stanley Cup run of 2011. Much of the deficiencies were covered up by Thomas’ out of body play! He bailed them out too many times to count which gave them a chance. If he had played like Rask or Khudobin (both have played well with the occasional weak goal allowed) the B’s lose that series to Montreal. Cup run over.

  • fab4ever

Thanks Brick for this astute observation. I’ll tell you when it went south for the B’s; that Sunday game against the Canadiens when they blew that lead in the 3rd period…that sucked as did the shootout loss late in March….

  • Bruinman86

    I like Pie.
