Irish Coffee: Kevin Garnett, Cake Boss of the Celtics 05.07.12 at 10:27 am ET
By

In the preseason, tortillas were Kevin Garnett‘s preferred metaphor for cooking up the main course that was to be the 2011-12 regular-season Celtics. In case you missed it, here was his recipe on Media Day in December.

“Timing is everything, and chemistry isn’t something that you just don’t throw in the frying pan and mix it up with another something, and throw something on top of that, and then fry it up, put it in a tortilla, put it in the microwave, heat it up and give it to you, and expect it to taste good. For those who can cook, y’all know what I’m talking about. If y’all don’t know what I’m talking about and can’t cook, then this doesn’t concern you.”

Now, it’s time for dessert, and Garnett is baking the cake that is to be the 2012 postseason Celtics.

“I always like to use baking a cake as an example,” said Garnett. “Nothing’s going to come out of the first two minutes. You have to sit there and wait on it, for y’all who know how to bake. Some of y’all don’t know how to bake, but don’t worry about it. Ask your mothers and fathers or something — someone who knows how to bake. But it’s very similar to that. You have to give it time for it to turn into what it’s going to be. Time tells everything when the results come, and I’m just glad we’re in a nice rhythm right now.”

Regardless of the recipe, Garnett’s point is clear: This Celtics team, the one that destroyed the Hawks by 22 points in Game 4, isn’t the NBA’s version of a Hot Pocket, quickly made and easily consumed. What you saw Sunday night has been marinating for months, ripe for the pressure cooker that is professional playoff basketball.

Kevin Garnett and his veteran Celtics teammates know the recipe for postseason success. (AP)

At one point in the 101-79 masterpiece, even during a run when the Celtics led by as much as 37 points, Greg Stiemsma‘s voice echoed into the rafters once the Garden crowd had grown quiet from bringing the noise. Stiemer’s voice, one that stewed quietly in the NBADL last season, could be heard calling out defensive schemes.

“When you talk, everybody is in tune — what we call initiated,” said Garnett. “You can’t use the excuse that you didn’t hear it or you didn’t know when guys are talking fluently, loudly. We have a very loud building, so you have to say things continuously over and over. Sometimes the guards give us crap from a big man standpoint for us not talking loud, but we try to say it repeatedly.

“It helps the guy,” he added. “It gives him confidence that he can guard the guy in front of him. Everybody’s been on an island, when you’re 1-on-1 with a guy, so you try to put yourself in that perspective and in that guy’s shoes and help him out, especially when you can.”

Celtics coach Doc Rivers and captain Paul Pierce called the victory “the best we’ve played this series.” Forget that, though, because it was the best the C’s have played all season. The game was over by the end of the first quarter, when the Celtics forced eight turnovers, shot 66.7 percent and took a 32-19 lead.

It had the feel of the 2008 first-round series between these same two teams, when the Celtics won all four home games by margins of 23, 19, 25 and 34 points. That team, in case you don’t remember, won the NBA title.

“I just knew that when we went over schemes and some of the new stuff that we wanted to correct that we were all locked in,” said Garnett. “Sometimes, man, individually we kind of get a little dysfunctional at times, but for the most part everybody was real communicative in what we were talking about. Guys were giving tips.

“I don’t like bringing up some of the past, but it was similar to some of the things we’ve done in the past. Obviously, this is a new group, new guys, deeper — and I say that as far as experience — but there was a lot of dialogue today. You could tell going through the layup lines, when we came in here, guys were focused in, and you could feel it. Not only were we just like that, but we carried it over to the court, so that’s big.”

From the leaders — Rajon Rondo‘s double-double (20 points, 16 assists) and Pierce’s shooting (24 points, 10-13 FG) — all the way down the line to the surprising contributions of Keyon Dooling (10 points) and Mickael Pietrus‘ defensive effort on Joe Johnson (9 points), it was a total team effort and all those other cliches.

“They’re just running the plays way more harder than we are,” said Hawks forward Josh Smith (15 points, 5-13 FG). “Whatever play is called, you know, Ray Allen is running off screens 100 miles per hour, Paul Pierce is finding a way to get open, the bigs are setting screens, getting the guards open.

“We have to try to duplicate what they do,” he added. “We have to try to get open. They’re trying so hard for Joe not to catch the ball. They’re being real physical with him, so we have to be able to match their physicality and be able to try to return the favor a little bit, see if they like it and stop being so passive.”

But that Celtics recipe wasn’t developed overnight. It can’t be replicated by Tuesday. It’s been reworked over the course of this five-year window, passed down to everyone from the veteran line cooks of the NBA world like Dooling and Pietrus to the young waitstaff in Stiemsma and Avery Bradley. It’s even had to be tweaked since that Media Day, when thoughts of Garnett as a center and Allen as a Sixth Man seemed ludicrous.

“We have our schemes down,” said Garnett. “Although we may not shoot the ball well on some nights, we like to say that we hang our hat on the defensive end. These last couple games, that’s where our focus has been.”

“We had a lot of fun,” added Bradley. “It’s fun playing the right way, playing the Celtic way, and that’s what we did.”

After their most complete performance of the season, these Celtics are enjoying themselves, especially since snaring a 3-1 series lead and facing the possibility of home court advantage in the Eastern Conference semifinals against the 76ers, themselves owners of a 3-1 series edge against the top-seeded Bulls.

Anything beyond that is the cherry on top of Garnett’s postseason dessert.

    BRUINS SUCK

  • Fab4ever

As happy as I am about them winning, hats off to the Leafs. They played great …they got up 3 and seemed to play “not to lose”…Last year we were on the other side of the coin…and how ironic that Bergeron scored the winner….last year he couldn’t lift the puck over the goalie in OT because of that rib injury…and we had a Lucic sighting….

    • Shoe bottom

      Bingo dead on

    • http://twitter.com/Zj_6 Zack Jones

      thanks

      • Troll Hunter

Great series and the Leafs remind me of that Montreal team sans all the flopping. Team speed is fantastic and they were even missing a couple of key players in Bozak and Fraser. They look like a very good team that will contend for years to come.

        • fab4ever

Absolutely…they did remind me of a team in the bright lights for the 1st time in a long time and not knowing how to close it out…we’ve been there…oh yeah…it’s a stinging loss but they’ll be back….and they play the game the right way…the Canadiens are such a joke….

    • anguillaman3

Well said…that was an historic collapse by the Leafs with less than ten minutes left in a game 7 up 3 goals…and then 90 seconds up by two. The Leafs have some good players and played a very good series..no flopping or cheap shots.

  • Troll Hunter

HAHAHAHAHA go suck it “mike”, “dave”, “steve” or what ever IDs you are going to use tonight. Bruins win and you lose douch e……………………….

Best comeback, in the playoffs, I have seen especially coming being down 4-1 with 10 minutes left in the third.

  • NE1935

I was way off as I predicted a 5-2 win however a win is the thing. Need the defensemen to get healthly. Hamilton comming of age and kessel Tyler did have a assist for winner.

  • Bill’s father

Bruins fans, I’m taking a moment to tell you that my son with the multiple ID’s, you know, Mike, who is Bill, Pete, Ron and probably a few others that I can’t remember, can’t come to the site and post suck, Boston sucks, Bruins suck, everyone sucks, because I found him in a drunken stupor, lying in a pool of his own urine and vomit. Right now he’s hooked up to an IV of glucose…I’m sure he’ll be back as obnoxious as ever, the coward that he is, as soon as any Boston team falls upon a hard time…we tried therapy but he was kicked out because he was constantly exposing himself…we don’t know what else to do.

    • Suck it Trolls.

Best part is that he was probably eagerly perched in front of his computer waiting for the game to end so he could spew his verbal diarrhea in all caps. Now he’s just spewing verbal diarrhea to himself.

      • Dave the Truth Grippo

Awesome, unbelievable, greatest comeback ever……but Jagr still s*cks donkey.

      • Bill’s father

He just woke up…we’ve had to change his Depends now at least 4-5 times since the 14 minute mark of the 3rrd period….doctor said only soft foods for awhile..he’s having a tough time keeping the dentures in..he insists on sucking the Poligrip right out of the tube…

      • patty

bruins suck so go upstairs and play with your 10 year old sister

        • Suck it Trolls.

You’re a moron so turn off the computer, put the straightjacket back on, and cry yourself to sleep, you absolute waste of life.

        • Troll Hunter

Same loser with the many IDs……………..

    • sally

Bruins will destroyed by the Great New York Rangers

      • Troll Hunter

“Bruins will destroyed by the Great New York Rangers”

Yeah, that makes about as much sense as your other ramblings. Changing your ID to a female, nice try but you are pretty easy to spot because your posts never change. Now go out and play in traffic you piece of shi t.

  • Chris Anastos

leaf’s are a tough problem going forword and a tough “future” oppoonenet
Great win and hopefully they parley this

    • NE1935

Their speed killed the bruins until they got it together by contolling the puck.

  • Daveyboy

The better team lost, hands down, Leafs rule, wait till next year, time to rebuild and trade the old men Boston

    • Troll Hunter

Wow, coming from a team that lost two of their 3 games at home that says a lot. Leafs played fantastic in the series but they were hardly the better team. The Leafs deserve all the credit in the world but they lost to a more experienced team no shame in that. But let’s get off the better team garbage. BTW where do you get Boston is an “old” team?

    • fab4ever

Dave…take your lumps like a man…the Leafs were terrific..but they were hardly the “better” team…a better team would have NEVER relinquished a 3 goal lead with 6 minutes to go…we know. We’ve been there…We give mountains of props to the Leafs…..

    • Bruinman86

Man, that’s just sad. If your Leafs were the better team they wouldn’t have lost. Instead, they showed why they weren’t ready yet to move to the next round. Maybe they are better next year. They certainly showed some heart in the series, no doubt. But they need a better goalie first.

    • Dick Dorkins

That team was so gracious and pure class in the loss, shame you’re not enough of an adult to do the same

  • http://twitter.com/Zj_6 Zack Jones

Wow what a game. Definitely a let down. I admit I thought the Leafs had it. They came all the way back in the series. Great game to the Bruins and good luck in the rest of the playoffs, Go Sox, and I suppose go Bruins now

    • Troll Hunter

Nothing but class man……..If the Leafs had won tonight, I would have been on their bandwagon going forward even with them beating Boston. They are a fun team to watch and they play it clean.

      • fab4ever

As I would have been as well…

    • glenn88

Zack, you are too relaxed. Your team just had a Buckner moment that will haunt the organization for decades. You really need to vent or break something (that you own). Not healthy man to be classy after what has just happened.

    • Bruinman86

I thought the leafs had it as well. B’s looked over-matched for most of the game. Seems like they decided to sit on the lead and got away from playing the game the way they did when they built the lead. Shows they have a pretty good team. An upgrade between the pipes and they could go much further. BTW, thanks for showing class in what must be a disappointing defeat. If only the other fans could handle it like you did. I’m sure next season’s game’s between the two teams will have much more meaning now.

      • http://twitter.com/Zj_6 Zack Jones

In my opinion, Reimer is the guy going forward. Watching this team all year and I can say confidently he was the MVP of the regular season. He’s only 23 so despite him really not helping out at all in either OT game this series, I’m confident enough in him going forward

        • Bruinman86

SO probably in a year or two he’s likely to step it up to the next level. He’s still quite young and developing, so if he can work on shutting down the rebounds, he would be a pretty good goalie.

  • NYCBruinsFan

Still jumping around we won tonight. What a great come back for the record. Now bring on the Rangers. I’ll be the guy in black and gold in a sea of Blue shirts at MSG. Go Bruins.

    • Bruinman86

I’m still in shock. Did what I saw really happen???? Talk about going from pissed off to elated in a 15 minute time period. What a monday!

  • NYCBruinsFan

    Boston’s Strong.

  • colrainkid

Give credit where credit is due. That was great, Claude deserves all the credit. Outstanding job Bruins, on to the next round!!!

  • Dick Dorkins

One of the more unlikely comebacks you’ll see, they looked like they were going to go down without swinging or even particularly caring. Then suddenly HOCKEY TEAM

  • Gray

wow that was an impressive come back to watch.. shouldnt have come to that but damn what a come back

  • Dynamite

Been watching the B’s for 60 years, and I’ve never seen anything quite like that. I remember 2 goals in the last 10 seconds against the Nordiques years ago, but that wasn’t in the 7th game of a series. Probably the only thing I’ve seen that rivals this was way back in the late 60s or early 70s when South Boston beat Arlington at the old Boston Arena in the state high school tournament. I think Southie was down 5-0 and won 7-5. Anyone else remember that?

  • glenn88

Lucic was player of the series. He carried that team when they went down 4-1. Unbelievable series by the big man and great to see his game and emotion back.

    • Bruinman86

Well…….there were a few games he took off. Krejci could be considered the player of the series as well. His 5 goals and 8 assists are tops in the NHL postseason so far. But there’s little doubt Lucic got them going tonight. Can’t take that away from him.

  • TheLegend33

U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E !!! 37 ….Thank You for waking up just in time.

  • Dan in N.

holy crap !!!.. I left after it was 4-1 leafs.. went out to eat had no idea until i just got back.. thought i was seeing things when i saw that score !!! what happened !!! the b’s looked cooked when I left…i swear im a jinx.. maybe i should keep not watching boston teams.. they seem to do better that way.
anyways.. im stunned and so happy for them.. hope i can see the highlights that i missed

  • Harsh Realities

JVR was ignored entirely appropriately because he had taken dives in every game of the series. That elbow to the face by one of the real good guys in the game with no penalty called was exactly how his behavior should have been dealt with. Well that and Z tossing him to the ice. 7th games should not be decided by refs and these refs did an amazing job of trying to keep themselves out of the way. JVR made himself look like a real loser the whole series and gave himself a reputation that should result in him getting his face beaten in on a regular basis for the next several years, and in penalties against him being ignored for a long time to come. Slash him, cross check him and punch him in the face until he abandons that approach. He’s too talented to allow him to play that way.

When it comes to the diving game, it really does come down to “who started it?” because whoever starts it is damaging the game and is a huge baby who needs a good beating.

  • TheLegend33

Wow, I’m still in shock ….2 Goals with Rask on the bench. Even getting it to 4-3 with Tukka still on the bench I never thought they could tie it up b/c all Toronto had to do was clear it down the ice and the clock was on thier side. Unreal !! Back down to earth now, in time for a resurgent Lundquist and the Rangers.

  • bench warmer

Bergy is the best damn center in hockey.

    • Uncle Buck

Steve from Fall River called into EEI yesterday and went on one of his endless rants saying I told you so the Bergeron is a “nice player” but not even close to being a top ten forward in the NHL. I never wanted to punch that pric k in the head more than when I heard him say that. He is one of the most complete, all around forwards in the game. Amazing two way player, physical, fast, smart, penalty killer, master face off man, clutch and skilled scorer at the right times. He could lead the league in points if he didn’t pride himself so much on his defensive abilities. If I am starting a team, I start with him.

  • Uncle Buck

Like the rest of the fans, I wrote this one off after the Leafs bagged the 4th goal. When Horty scored the 2nd goal I looked at the clock and knew it was possible, but still had no hope as I would not allow myself to get sucked back in for the pain. When Claude pulled Tuukka I said to myself, this never works, it’s gonna be a 5-2 game and we get to see the mob in Toronto again freaking out. When Bergy tied it I’m pretty sure my dog just about crapped herself I yelled so loud. Been watching a long time and never, ever saw anything close to this. Best part, we get to see the Rangers with home ice. Faith restored.

  • Salezguynh

so it took 3 months and 7 playoff games for his head to pop out of his ….? Where was their sense of urgency in games 5 &6? Time to break up the band..

  • worstmayorever

wow. bruins cheat and refs hand them game on a platter. what a shame, but no surprise.

    • worstmayorever is a tranny

What a pathetic turd you are Mike, Pete, Bill, Sally, Ron…now the B’s cheated…dude, you have a serious problem…a really, really BIG problem with life…

  • lobsterfarmer

who is this post intended for?

  • lobsterfarmer

do you really think the players look at this drivel?

  • Troll Hunter

    Nice call douch e……

  • Wayne Cashman

Been watching Hockey for 40 years, that was one of the greatest comebacks i have ever seen in the playoffs. To be down 4-1 and looking down & out they find a way to dig deep and score 2 goals in the last two minutes to get to overtime. Then they come out on a mission and take it away from Toronto. What a Hockey game. They need to play like the third period the whole game. Next its old time hockey, The Ranger’s. Bruins in six

  • Bruinman86

That has to be one of the greatest comebacks i have ever seen in all my many years of watching hockey. I have never seen a team score 2 with the goalie pulled in a playoff game. Great win, but to bring it down a notch, the Bruins should never have put themselves in this position to begin with. So as great as the win was, it still gives me some doubt about them against a real goaltender in lundquist in this next series.

  • renben

Don’t like a Ranger match up at all- Lundqvist can steal a series

  • Troll Hunter

HAHAHAHA the douch e shows up and still whines……

  • Your mother’s a whore

    I almost pity you… almost.

  • Dick Dorkins

What a sad, empty life you live. I’d genuinely feel bad if you weren’t so devoid of reasons to care.

  • Uncle Buck

good stuff tom. thank you for that.

  • worstmayorever is a tranny

I doubt that very much…your presence, your diction, your overall lack of the English language tells me (and everyone else) that you are a 100%, grade A compulsive L-O-S-E-R!!!!!

  • worstmayorever

7 years graduate work in languages, baby. Buy one has to lower the skill level to communicate with the yobs.
