Irish Coffee: 5 questions Celtics must solve in Game 6 05.09.12 at 2:04 pm ET
By

In many ways, the Game 5 loss was simply a string of statistical Celtics anomalies that favored the Hawks.

  • After making 21-of-82 treys in Games 1-4 (25.6%), The Hawks shot 7-of-16 from 3-point range (43.8%).
  • The Hawks committed four more turnovers (18-14), but the Celtics scored four fewer points off them (21-25).
  • After the Celtics kept pace on the glass in Games 1-4 (174-178), the Hawks won the Game 5 battle, 41-33.
  • Paul Pierce air-balled a would-be go-ahead 20-footer with 18 seconds remaining.
  • Rajon Rondo lost his sure handle and failed to deliver a pass while time expired.

Of course, there are reasons for those anomalies, so how must the Celtics adjust to avoid a Game 7 on the road?

THE WAR OF ATTRITION

At series start, Ray Allen was the biggest — and maybe only — question mark on the Celtics injury list. Meanwhile, injuries decimated the Hawks frontcourt, only made worse by Josh Smith‘s Game 2 knee strain.

What a difference a few days makes. Pierce (knee), Avery Bradley (shoulder), Mickael Pietrus (hamstring), Greg Stiemsma (feet) and Kevin Garnett (hip) are all hobbled to various degrees, and Allen is among few fresh Celtics.

“I don’t really think it [left knee] bothered me too much,” Pierce told reporters in Atlanta after shooting 7-of-17 and failing to get to the free throw line. “I didn’t really try to think about it. I probably was a little step slower. I didn’t have my usual lift that I usually do. But I don’t think it really affected me, too much. I mean, I’m not a high-riser anyway.”

While the Celtics limp their way back to Boston, Josh Smith returned to form in recording his fourth double-double in as many games (13 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists), and Al Horford produced 19 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals in just his second game back since Jan. 11. Combined, the two gave the Hawks eight extra possessions on the offensive glass and blocked four C’s shots on the defensive end in Game 5.

What kind of ramifications will Pierce’s knee (he sat for a 7:38 stretch from the late third quarter through the early fourth) and Horford’s conditioning (played 41 minutes in Game 5) have on the remainder of the series?

THE MATCH GAME

In the first four games, Celtics coach Doc Rivers stayed a step ahead of Hawks counterpart Larry Drew. Rivers adjusted minute-to-minute, and Drew reacted game-to-game. When Atlanta announced Marvin Williams‘ insertion into the starting lineup early Tuesday, giving the C’s ample time to adjust, it seemed like more of the same.

“The Boston Celtics are going to make you grind for every bucket, every point,” Smith admitted postgame. “You have to think and outsmart them on a lot of plays because their defensive I.Q. is almost perfect.”

The Hawks finally took advantage of a move the Celtics anticipated in Game 1, sliding 6-foot-7 Joe Johnson into the shooting guard spot opposite the shorter Bradley, and perhaps Rivers stewed on it too much, playing the veteran Allen 30 minutes off the bench to Bradley’s 18 and sacrificing defense for offense.

In 18 minutes, Bradley and Pierce respectively held Johnson and Williams to six points on 2-for-14 shooting (0-5 3P) and forced them into four turnovers. In the remaining 30 minutes — largely with Pierce on Johnson and Allen on Williams — that Hawks duo scored 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting (4-6 3P) and committed just two turnovers.

Williams shot 3-of-3 from beyond the arc with Allen on the floor and 0-for-3 with Bradley playing. Coincidence?

Swingmen Mickael PIetrus and Joe Johnson have both underperformed in the series. (AP)

BENCH PRESSING

After Horford and Williams joined the starting lineup, the Hawks trotted out over-30 shells of their former selves Erick Dampier, Tracy McGrady, Kirk Hinrich and Willie Green off the bench. The result was a 25-9 scoring advantage for the Celtics reserves, aided of course by Allen’s 15 points.

And that was without much if any contribution from Mickael Pietrus offensively. He scored two points on four shots, and he passed up an open 3-pointer moments before Pierce’s air-ball. Repeat: Pietrus passed up an open 3. For the series, he’s shooting 3-of-14 from the field (21.4%) and 2-of 13 from 3-point range (15.4%) for eight points. Pietrus scored more than eight points in 15 of his 42 games during the regular season.

Sure, athletic Ryan Hollins (5 points) outworked unathletic Dampier, and Keyon Dooling continued his surprising contribution (8-14 FG, 5-9 3P for the series), but the C’s could take more advantage of Atlanta’s awful bench.

Smith, Johnson, Horford and Jeff Teague all played more than 40 minutes, and Williams played 35. Only Rondo played more than 40 minutes for the Celtics, and that could pay dividends in Game 6, barring health issues. So, can Drew continue to ride his starters that much, and can Rivers extract more from Pietrus & Co.?

FROM START TO FINISH

Outside of Game 4, when the Celtics took an early 17-9 lead on their way to a 101-79 blowout, the Hawks have outscored the C’s by 21 (53-32) in the first five minutes of the remaining four games, in which the two teams are separated by all of three points. The Hawks are frontrunners, and the early leads only feed their confidence.

“We have just to come out and play hard again,” Teague told the Atlanta-Journal Constitution after Game 5. “It’s going to be a hostile environment. We’ve just got to get past those first five minutes and we’ll be fine.”

In the final five minutes and change of Games 1, 2, 3 and 5 — when the Hawks pit their five best against the C’s top five — the Celtics have outscored Atlanta each time, by a total of 14 points (46-32).

We know how these playoff-tested Celtics can finish games, but how will they start against the Hawks in Game 6?

NO-SHOW JOE

Johnson earned his sixth consecutive NBA All-Star Game selection this winter, and for good reason. He averaged 18.8 points while shooting a fairly efficient 45.4 percent from the field and 38.8 percent from 3-point range.

His 8.5 estimated wins added this season ranked higher than anyone on the Celtics but Pierce, but neither of the Hawks victories and perhaps all three of their losses this series can be pinned on Johnson.

In three regular-season games against the Celtics, Johnson averaged 23.0 points while shooting 48.1 percent from the field (25-52 FG) and 50.0 percent from 3-point range (7-14 3P), but he’s been unable to match that in the playoffs, producing 17.2 points per game but shooting only 36.5 percent from the field (23.3 3P%).

Since 2007-08, in 13 games at the TD Garden, the former Celtics first-round draft pick has shot just 38.8 percent from the field (84-216 FG), including his 11-of-28 performance in Game 3 of this series.

Johnson is capable of scoring 30 points on any given night, but can the Celtics contain him again in Boston?

    New York will sweep Boston
    Bruins have no chance

  • Dick Dorkins

I was dreading Krug being in the lineup for this, boy did he shut me up.

Great job of not giving up after hitting the post 200 times, I guess after the last game there’s not much that’ll make you feel like this game isn’t going to work out.

    • Bruinman86

Same here. I wasn’t giving the B’s much of a chance given the disadvantage in net and missing 3 of their top defensmen. Impressive win, especially after hitting so many posts.

  • glenn88

The Rangers look slow. I don’t want to get over confident, but I think this is a good match up for the Bruins. Just keep Chara on the ice for Nash, because after Nash the Rangers don’t have much.

  • NYCBruinsFan

Great game and an even better OT win. Great hocky, especially from our freshman defensemen. Hat’s off to all of them, especially the way they moved the puck on the power play. They played very smart hockey. Now three more. Go Bruins.

    • fab4ever

There’s one rule in the NHL that needs to be reviewed in the off-season and modified; It’s that “intentional delay of game”…modification should be done by motive. I watched the Kings/Sharks last night…Sharks were up 3-2 with a couple of minutes left…they get called for a dubious tripping penalty…it happens…they’re doing a good job on the kill when a Shark tried to move the puck out of the zone…he kind of flips it up by the tip of his stick…CLEARLY not trying to get it over the glass…in fact, replays could have indicated it grazed a King on the way out…he got the penalty…5 on 3 and the Kings score 2 goals in 22 seconds, game.

  • https://twitter.com/BostonSportFan1 ChrisinDanvers

Solid game and a great way to begin this series. The Bruins came out strong, particularly starting three rookie defensemen (who came through quite well). A couple of things that stood out.

1.Krug did not look out of place at all and Bartkowski can give some hits.
    2. The switch in lines with Jagr added to the Bergeron and Marchand line was more effective than I thought and brought a strong pace, which the Bruins will need in order to win. Too bad Jagr can’t hang onto the puck for long stretches.

    3. The Bruins set up shop nicely in front of the net. Leads me to believe there won’t be as many hit posts in future games.

    Overall, a great OT win.

  • johnbalducci72

MARCHMONT BACK = TROUBLE FOR RANGERS !!!!!!!!!!

  • Uncle Buck

I was very impressed with the showing of all three rookie defensemen. Bartkowski in particular played with a lot of confidence and Hamilton looked as good as we have seen him in the playoffs yet. Goes without saying the Krug surprised most folks including myself. When you can put three rookies in the rotation and not only not skip a beat, but get solid production from them, things are going your way. But, and it’s a big but, they need to get Seidenberg back asap.

  • ANON

Pierre is a tool who care what this guy says…

    • ANON likes the NBA

A lot of folks do…he probably has more hockey knowledge in his pinky nail than you have in your entire body…

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000218460416 Michael White

Yeah, true but, he doesn’t have much play by play knowledge. he walked all over Dave Strader last night during the call of Marchand’s OT goal

  • Brooklyn Bruin 65

Imagine what we can do with our 3 back liners in the line up

    • Bruinman86

Nice to know they have the depth and future players ready to step in.

  • bsox67

Big screen tv $800, cable bill $80….Not having to listen to “the puck is knocked up into the “protective” netting” and “Lets go Bruins is the chant from the TD Garden crowd” 15 times a game…..priceless.

  • Schwank

Krug is no slouch. As far as prospects go he’s a 7 which means he projects as a 2nd line or 3/4 defensemen. (The offense equivalent in a 7 is a top six second line forward.) He’s just young 1st year in the pro’s after 3 years at Mich St where he was 1st Team ALL STAR his last two years. (I presume he left after his JR year.) I bet he takes over for someone next year. But again no slouch.

  • glenn88

DS is a big plus and the Bruins need him back. I am starting to question if Redden and Ference are really better options than the three young kids. The young guys can move the puck and even the PP has actually improved a little.

  • NYRFan_RF

It doesn’t matter much. I hope they do get those old injured defenseman back in the lineup for game 2. Those kids played well but that won’t last. One game was needed as part of a feeling out process. Watch a little film and get on them. Expose them a bit either way. Young/inexperienced or old/injured. Take advantage. Chara is gonna fall apart if he keeps playing 1/2 the game.

  • bench warmer

Ference sucks, keep him out. Trade him next year for a water bottle.

  • Rod Steele

I’d rather have the kids that Redden. I like his experience, but Redden is too slow. The Rangers have good team speed on the back end and against slow D men they can get to loose pucks and rebounds. I also like the speed of our young guys on transition; takes the Rangers forwards off the back check in the neutral zone and leads to more offensive zone ice time, which is what we need against Lunqvist.

I think it was McGuire that compared Krug to Don Sweeney and I think he’s right. So for me, unless it’s Seidenberg coming back or Ferrence, keep the youth. Hamilton has made some bone-headed coverage plays, but he is a quick learner and I think will be OK. And Bartkowsi was played lots of minutes at the end of the season to get his speed into the mix. With Chara’s and Seidenberg’s minutes, we can’t really expect them to be sprinting through center ice on transition. Let the young guys do it.

For my money I’d double shift Seguin and cut Jagr back to PP only. Maybe then Seguin will get tired and learn that position trumps frantic chasing and take next step.

  • CraftyandSly1

Terrific win by the Boston Bruins, today. Balanced scoring among the lines, and the fourth line could well have scored another three goals. Paille’s short-handed shot of the post would have stabbed-the-beast, once again. The Bruins bent during the first two periods, but they did not break as New York gave us their best. However, their best produced only two goals while fatigue is showing on Henrik Lundqvist. The Bruins, on the other hand, have a goalie who appears to be gaining more confidence for every playoff game he plays. Tuukka Rask was awesome on so many excellent scoring chances for the NY Rangers. How about that Torey Krug, huh? He scored a goal and assisted on a second goal (scored by Campbell). Awesome! Boychuck? Cannot say enough about his higher level of play during the playoffs, this season. He is leading all defensemen with three goals scored, and he leads the entire NHL in blocked shots during the 2013 Playoffs. Their special teams? They were five-for-five on the PK, and oh-for-one on the PP. Gregory Campbell won the coveted US Army Ranger Jacket, today. Nice job, Soup!

  • bench warmer

Let Krug stay and keep Ferrence in traction.

  • bill/steve/tom

I’ll just go suck my thumb and cry in the corner of my basement now.

    • Uncle Buck

Pity the trolls and their NY lover boys.

  • Shoe bottom

Great start to the series b’s. keep on the pedal and the leafs would be up 2 as well can’t see a lot to like about rangers but Pierre between the glass will make up something he might want to get his glass prescription checked though

    • jj

not sure how people make assumptions how toronto would be winning. who cares, toronto is DONE. bye. they are up NO games. lol

  • PDiddy

Where’s that big shot Rangers fan that was talking trash about the defensive rookies and our old timer Chara? Still holding on to your guns? Thought you said we’d get spanked game 2. Why so quiet now?

  • innovator1

    I believe it’s spelled Henk,,,not Hank…..I used to know a Henk from Lundqvist’s area…At least I think so ,anyway…

  • innovator1

Also, which shouldn’t be lost in all of this is Julien finally givng in,and moving Jagr to the right of Bergeron….It was about time, and the longer that line spends together, the more cohesive a unit it will be..They just need to learn how to play off eachother….Look out for this line the rest of the way!!!

  • Uncle Buck

14 Comments long after the Boston win ? Oh, where have the NY schlong boy trolls gone ? Amazing how that works. A sports board for fans, with not one troll.

This team has found itself. The kids on D have been huge. Give Claude credit for letting them play to their strengths and involve them in the offense. May not work every night against certain opponents, but it is working now and the Rangers are stymied by it. I think Redden and Ferrence can take their sweet time getting healthy. The playoffs are a long grueling battle. My main takes from this one….Tory Krug has skilled footwork and Lucic is engaged. Anytime we thrash a NY team is a reason to celebrate. Off to MSG.

  • NE1935

Instead of clearing the puck time and again along the side boards when in trouble was nice to see Krug with speed skat it out.

  • disqus_56EHBIkZcr

big win! 1 out of 2 in msg is ok with me.

  • NE1935

Just keep on giving and they will keep on taking.

  • Bill

These athletes are like children, making excuses for why they lost at a game. Grow up.

  • mike

Who cares because neither one of these teams has a chance against Pittsburgh

    • JJ

Funny Pitt lost tonight. Guess they are so good they wanted to play 2 overtimes lol

      • mike

Talk to me in three weeks when both teams are golfing and Pittsburgh is winning the cup

        • Gray

Well im sure the Kings or the Blackhawks would love to see Burg in the finals.. theyd know they had the physical edge easily and in the Kings case the superior goal tender too.

        • Uncle Buck

talk to me in three minutes you useless little pussie troll. Why do you hide from the Sox boards when they are winning ? Rotten little piece of s hit

        • Mike’s real name is Dick Head

Mike/Tom/Bill/Sally/Ron/Yankee27…once again, you prove your worthlessness…first it was “Bruins are OUT in the 1st round. Then it was Knicks this, Knicks that (they proved less an opponent to Indiana then the C’s did against them), then it’s ALWAYS Sox finish last…”. Keep throwing that spaghetti against the wall…something is bound to stick. While you’re at it, get a call into the Penguins to see if they can find some goaltending worthy of winning a Stanley Cup….

    • Antonio

Mike…….the B’s and NY Rangers most certainly do have a chance against Pitt. Pitts’ goalie and lack of defense from time to time is bound to catch up with them sooner or later.

  • voice of reason

no you had you arses handed to you

  • CraftyandSly1

Did Lundqvist lay the blame for yesterday’s loss on his offensive and defensive players, AGAIN? That’s two games in a ROW where he blames SOMEBODY ELSE for giving up the goals!

    • Phil

Funny to hear him complain. There were three posts rang against him in the first two games that he didn’t even move for and was clearly beat on! The B’s could have won yesterdays game 7 – 2, IMO.

  • Rod Steele

The Rangers need to get faster. If they can do that in two days then they have a chance. Otherwise, the Bs will continue to roll, unless they go back into hibernation. Hank better bring some honeypots and start singing lullabies! Keep the kids at D! They have matched the forwards speed and now we have a fast team. Fast gets to pucks, jumps into plays, makes the forecheck effective. Just teach them to hook guys on a breakaway. Rather PK than give up odd man opportunities ‘cuz the Rangers won’t score as much on the PK.

  • glenn88

Strange comments. Someone at his level should take the blame for the goals and not even address teammates or suggest someone other than himself is responsible. Also, he plays on a team that has guys who lead the league in blocking shots. Show a little respect for the guys playing that system. I lost some respect for the King after these comments.

  • Antonio

I can understand the intent of blocking shots and the Rangers are by far the best team in the league at doing such. However, there were a couple of instances where the main objective was to block a shot and a shot never came, resulting in many of the Rangers’ players out of position. Not to mention that on at least two occasions, the Rangers accidently screened Lundqvist in an attempt to block a shot which resulted in goals.

  • Fab4ever

I hate the Rangers game…packing it in all the time…notice how the B’s put some bodies in front so that Lundqvist couldn’t get a clear view? NY may have appeared slow, especially after the Leafs who were fast, but this series is gonna be grueling…

  • Fab4ever

He scares me..he’s the one goalie that can take over a series..

  • blinding glare

Couldn’t agree more! I’m a huge Marchand fan, but how can you describe the winning goal without any mention of the hard work and beautiful touch pass from Bergeron? Plus, the mention of Boychuk’s ringer off the post leaves out the fact that Campbell redirected that shot. Boychuk is also a great competitor, but that shot was gonna hit Lundqvist right on the pads til Campbell almost scored with it.
B’s definitely felt the residual effects of the 7 games with Toronto, especially the OT in game 7, but they dominated the end of that game last night. Give Lundqvist his due, but I lost track of how many times the B’s hit the crossbar and/or the goalpost! And they finally had a powerplay that looked like a powerplay!

  • Bruinman86

He can, but Lundquivst is a better goalie. On a 1-10 scale I see Lundquvist as a 9 and Rask as an 8. Rask can play awesome, but isn’t strong on breakaways and gives up his share of soft goals. That said, he’s still a great goalie. Just no Tim Thomas in his prime.

  • Dano50

Oh I’m certain he HAS been. More than once. But to his credit…he gets back up.

  • Old Time Hockey

your annoying with your post Bob L

  • NYRFan_RF

Do you think those great young defenseman are gonna play if the 3 veterans come back? No, likely not and I don’t think the will be. I believe Julien is just playing games. Those kids scared the crap out of him. The Rangers didnt have their legs for some reason and if not for a dumb penalty, The Rangers had that game won. We usually don’t take too many penalties either. Hank is a little better and our D is healthier. Can’t see the B’s winning this series.

  • Uncle Buck

Well, you have to win a game before you win the series. Good Luck. The kids did not scare the crap out of anyone. All three made solid contributions and showed they had fresh legs. You’re welcome on here to talk trash when your team gains control of the series.

  • NYRFan_RF

Yeah, I don’t think so! I’m not talking trash only the truth. You’ll see. Let down is coming and it’s gonna get away from the Bruins so quick the wont have a chance to react. Chara is 37? He can’t play 37 mins every game and if he does, it’s only a matter of time before he gets caught tired and flat footed.

  • Uncle Buck

I’m sure you would love to see a let down. Will you stay available on these boards if your Rangers fail ? Otherwise I won’t waste my time debating.

  • B’s cup_again

    Nice call, idiot.

  • fab4ever

As Michael Corleone said in Godfather III; “Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in”….I can’t figure this team…for 2 months they looked like they couldn’t beat a college club team…and they didn’t care that they couldn’t beat a college club team…now they’re 2 wins from the Conference Final…

  • Uncle Buck

Yep. One word may sum it up. Playoffs.

The Bruins have beat the Rangers along the boards. There’s no debate. That’s the Rangers game and Boston has beat us at it. In their defense. The Rangers are missing 3 important players. 1-Ryan Clowe is a 230lb beast who keeps opposition honest. The Bruins are too big for the Rangers and to not have a big body like Clowe hurts badly. 2- Marc Staal is a shut down defenseman that’s able to log top pair mins and can make whoever is playing with him better. As good as MacDonagh is, Staal is right there. 3-Brad Richards might be on the ice but only a fraction of himself. He was supposed to be the top Pivot paired with Nash. He’s a great skater and is the only dominant Center the Rangers were supposed to have. He’s been injured all year and never got going. The Rangers will buy him out and have 20mil in space to find a top C or he gets a full Camp to find his game. 2 Centers played really well up to this point in Stepan & Brassard. If they’re the 2nd and 3rd Centers this is surely not 3-0 Broooins!
