What he brings: Although he played primarily as a power forward for Georgetown in his first two seasons, Thompson was moved during his junior season to the wing, where his skill set makes more sense. Thompson is a natural athlete at 6-8 with a 6-10 wingspan, and at 205 pounds he can run and up and down the court smoothly.

Thompson’s best attribute clearly is 3-point shooting, as he ranked among the best in the NCAA and in Georgetown history. He shot 43 percent from long distance last season and has a smooth and accurate form. He is a little bit one-dimensional offensively, however, and is no more than average creating his own shot off the dribble as he lacks the necessary ball-handling skills to blow by a defender.

Scouts might look to see Thompson build some weight and strength to play more effectively on the defensive end at the next level. But he usually plays defensively on the perimeter and possesses a solid understanding of how to contest shots and stay in front of his man with the correct footwork.

Where the Celtics could get him: Had Thompson returned to Georgetown for his senior season and improved his all-around game, he’d surely be considered first-round material. As is, he’s more likely to end up going in the middle of the second round. He helped his cause with an impressive showing at the NBA draft combine in Chicago earlier this month. If Ray Allen departs Boston via free agency, Thompson’s shooting skills would be valuable for the C’s.

Notes: Thompson previously declared for the NBA draft following his sophomore season, but he ultimately decided to withdraw his name and return to Georgetown for his junior year. It turned out to be a smart decision, as he improved his game and averaged 12.8 points, second-best on the team.
