Matt Bonner’s day-after-Thanksgiving sandwich saga 11.22.12 at 12:57 pm ET
By

In case you you haven’t read his “Sandwich Hunter: The Quest for the Hoagie Grail” blog on NBA.com, the Spurs’ Matt Bonner is the league’s sandwich connoisseur. (Although, I have to disagree with the New Hampshire native’s selection of D’Angelo’s as New England’s sandwich haven. Total rookie movie from an NBA veteran.)

Considering the day-after-Thanksgiving hoagie is the greatest in history, we couldn’t let him escape Boston without first getting Bonner’s recipe for that sandwich Squanto and Myles Standish probably invented in the 1620s.

“Typically, you’ve got the turkey out of the fridge with some stuffing and gravy and cranberry sauce,” said the pride of Concord, N.H., “and you’ve got yourself an amazing leftover sandwich.”

Unfortunately, San Antonio’s 112-100 win over the Celtics on Thanksgiving eve was the start of a long road trip, so after relaxing with family after the game, he joins the Spurs in Indiana for a Friday night game against the Pacers. And that means Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili are the only heroes the Red Rocket will be seeing.

“I’m out of luck,” said Bonner, “because it’s the first game of a six-game East Coast 10-day road trip. So, we’re having a team Thanksgiving dinner, which means no leftovers, so no sandwiches.”

Hey, professional basketball players can’t have it all, so be thankful when you’re devouring that leftover turkey, stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce (and my brother’s secret day-after-Thanksgiving sandwich addition: mashed potatoes) — all on toasted bread, of course. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Quentin in left and Crawford in right woulda worked

  • jarvisgrislore

Sad…RF with absolutely no production.  SD gave up crap to get Quentin…still no depth whatsoever at SP and no RF…Sweeney/McDonald/Aviles/Khalish (injured)…really?  Right handed bat with power was there for the taking and once again Cherington doesn’t get it done….”scared off”, really?  When your giving up fridge minor league prospects, who gives a crap i.e. the Bailey trade….that’s exactly what SD gave CHI for Quentin, your telling me the Sox don’t have some fringe minor league prospects…cmon Ben smarten up.

    • mark

Quentin sucks and will make $8 million and would force the sox to pay a 40% tax on him.

    • Dddd

      Go away

      • jarvisgrislore

Your a joke along with Zack Jones…stop wasting bandwith and post something meaningful you toolshed.  Otherwise “Go away”…

Now for the other comments…Quentin is well worth $8mil, Drew was a bargain at $15m right???  Granted he was injured this year but still managed 20HR’s, etc…and is not considered a clown in the clubhouse.  I don’t think that list of people I mentioned would hit 20 combined.  Perfect stop gap for a few seasons and wouldn’t break the bank at the same time.  Juding by what SD gave them…we could have stole him.
Now Werth…negative…had his one big year, cashed in, and choked horribly…if it wasn’t for Adam Dunn, Werth would have been the worst FA signing in a long time..actually it will be once it’s all said and done.  Just a KO machine.
Quentin would have been a major upgrade over that cast of minor leaguers Ben has projected for RF.

Should the Red Sox have traded Anthony Ranaudo and another lower pitching prospect for Carlos Quentin?

Simon Castro, one of the pitching prospects traded for Quentin, ranked No. 57 in 2010 and No. 58 in 2011 in Baseball America’s preseason Top 100 prospect lists. Ranaudo, who is 17 months younger than Castro, ranked No. 67 in 2011.

If Simon Castro is “crap,” what is Anthony Ranaudo?

    It’s only Jan 1st…………relax

The Sox really are not showing commitment here by going on the cheap when they have so many options to put themselves in great shape for 2012. After last years disaster the onus is on their management to do the best they can to put the best team on the field. management has failed so far. If they were pinching pennies, then the Ortiz contract makes no sense, and the could have gotten a good right handed DH bat for far less, enabling them to get a RF with some production numbers. The cost would have been less for both slots than Ortiz and production likely as good or better between those two players.

  • madmc44

Larry I agree–CC in RF works–give Carl 4 months to prepare himself mentally and physically for playing RF. It should work for a Major Leaguer who has played nothing but OF his entire professional life to switch to the other corner. I also have to say for a professional outfielder he played left field very poorly both home or away with the Sox last season.

The alternative, which I have mentioned in other threads, is to trade CC to the Nat’s for Werth and have Werth play right and platoon Lavarnway in left with Sweeney, when he’s not catching and DH’ing. Yes Lavarnway has played the OF–he played approximately 50 games at Yale before he was switched to catcher.

  • Chris

Werth is terrible why would anyone in Boston want him and Quentin has really faded the last 2 years as a player.  Id much rather get a consistent player that can field and throw out there, the Sox have a ton of bats and I think they have done a tremendous job gathering unheard of solid pitchers from HOU and OAK.

  • Ortiz34renteria16

We could of kept Quentin in LF an moved Crawford to RF. Why not Crawford could more then handle RF.

  • NHSox fan

I am so sick and tired of the Sox complaining about money … seriously give me a break. I understand not going out and breaking the bank for some of these guys, but quit crying poor. I don’t mind going on the cheap, but the reason they are “poor” has nothing to do with baseball. It has to do with the stupid racing and soccer teams.

  • Nate

We have to start somewhere and see who will step as a quality pitcher when March rolls around.  It can’t hurt to try.

  • madmc44

The team needs to have players at the minor league level in Pawtucket to field a team–you need roughly a dozen pitchers maybe one will be the diamond in the rough. They all have the dream of getting one more shot at the bigs.  Most of the position players have been signed–these pitchers may not be with the PawSox after ST breaks–maybe 2 might might stick with the PawSox.

  • Zeke

Charlie Haeger is mentioned here but you forgot(?) to state that he is a knuckleball pitcher.  Why would a 28 yr old choose to be a minor league?  He has shown the he has the potential and Wakefield could be his coach. Why did the Sox sign him? A secret weapon?

  • Paul Gram

his  bat is worth mediocre defense. I like this option.

  • Normdubois

Another great announcement.  Imagine that!  Mike Aviles says he is ‘ready, willing and able’ to
become a Red Sox right fielder. Sounds like someone looking for a job at the unemployment
office.  Experience wise Aviles caught five fly balls in the outfield in 2011, but he says he is up to
the challenge of ‘potentially’ becoming an outfielder.  Imagine that!  the Red Sox only two options
to play right field, as of now, is 34 yr.old bench player Darnell McDonald and an apprentice named
Mike Aviles.  Maybe the Red Sox plans for any celebration in the 2012 season are only to
    celebrate Fenway’s 100th birthday.

    • Bbboston

Personally, i think this guy is an enormous plus to this team. He can play passable defense now arguably at every position but two-four AND bats well with the added benefit of speed. He is the consummate utility guy and can be a reasonable plug in starter when injuries occur.

  • thebear76

As noble as this sounds, I think the Sox need a different option. Playing right in Fenway is not a place for a novice. I like Aviles’s attitude and team spirit, but he’ll get plenty of games in the IF. There are any number of relatively cheap options out there to hit RH and spell the other guys once in a while, and RH DH. I think Sweeney will be a real good platoon player, but we need another from the right side. I suppose long term, some of those guys who were from the 2010 draft might be the answer, so no need for an expensive long term guy, but Aviles or McDonald– I don’t think so. I got very amused at Ben the other night telling the other Kool-Aid drinkers that Darnell was a good outfielder. YIKES! We’re asking this guy to make trades for us?

  • Demarco606

Alex,140k is not low for a player drafted in the 17th round.I think it’s a little high.

  • frogbogg

Jenks must be Czech for Yugo.

  • http://twitter.com/SoxLaundry Red Sox Laundry

Last I checked they did not sign Ortiz, he accepted Arbitration, which they offered to him to get a potential draft pick had he left. That being said it is not a guaranteed deal and they can cut him. I can’t imagine they would with his production being worth way more than what 15mill will get you in FA.

  • Paul

The Sox are trying to minimize their luxury tax payment, that’s what signing a high dollar David Ortiz has to do with it. Just because you disagree with someone, that equates to “pink hat” status?

  • Pedro

Will he be your favorite when he makes 3 errors in one game, this gets more comical everyday, do the sox really want to put a player in right with no clue how to field out there?
This guy is a bum anyway so who cares where he plays

  • Nepatriots1stfan

What police record…Charges were dropped and he was exonerated…Check your facts first before you make a comment.

  • ricoss1967

    This “guy is a bum”?????
“makes 3 errors in one game”????

Where do you get your “insight” (sic)?

Just dont bother to post here anymore. You’re such an idiot

  • R_emmet

Yeah the original Sox made a real good move.

  • Robert5286

Jenks sneaks in as one of Theo’s worst moves. With so many good relievers available after 2010,Theo did nothing untill Jenks was one of the few left. He burned himself, the team, and the fans with this boneheaded signing. Now he is busy dismantling the Cubs, sending away Cashner and Marshall for unproven minor leaguers.

  • Robert5286

Agreed. Send them a good prospect just for taking him off our hands.
