Rajon Rondo messes with reporters, admits time away from Celtics ‘was difficult’ 12.04.12 at 3:58 pm ET
By

WALTHAM — Rajon Rondo said he really got away during his league-imposed two-game suspension for his role in the brawl last Wednesday with the Nets.

“I went to Mexico for a couple of days and watched the games,” said Rondo, who was immediately asked if he was being serious. “It was cool.”

Rondo, who practiced with the team on Monday and Tuesday, said he just wanted to give his body a chance to rest. Team officials had no knowledge of Rondo traveling outside the country, leading to the conclusion that Rondo was simply joking with reporters.

“Why not? Had days off, allow my body to get a chance to rest,” Rondo said, insisting again that he went south of the border. “I wanted to be out there with my teammates but obviously a two-game suspension, and I was glued in front of the TV.

“Hopefully, I don’t feel too winded [Wedensday]. I’ve been off for about a week. We’ll see [Wednesday].”

The Celtics return to action on Wednesday night at 7:30, when they host Kevin Love and the Timberwolves at TD Garden. The Celtics went 1-1 without Rondo, beating Portland Friday easily before blowing a 17-point lead Saturday and losing in Milwaukee.

“We moved the ball very well without me,” Rondo said. “Guys played great, guys stepped up. Courtney [Lee] played well. We got off to a great start in Milwaukee but our defense slipped in terms of our blitz pick-and-roll defense. Other than that, the guys did a great job.”

Rondo said there was no lesson learned from the suspension.

“It was difficult,” Rondo added. “I love being around the guys; I love coming into the practice and just being around the team playing. I’ve missed that for a couple of days but other than that, everything is back to normal. I want to get better; I want to run off about eight or nine games straight. It starts in practice and it starts with staying in the game. I just want to go out there and give it all for my teammates and try to get some wins. We have to get this show on the road. We have to have a great Decemeber. November is behind us. We didn’t play well. We’re 9-8. But it’s a new month and I’m ready to go.”

As for his double-digit assist record which ended Wednesday at 37 games, Rondo was philosophical.

“It’s over with. It may be [important] when I get 40 [years old] or 50 but right now, it’s a record and records are meant to be broken,” he said. “I was second, tied with John Stockton, so that’s a great accomplishment but nevertheless, it’s about wins and losses.”

NOTES: Leandro Barbosa was not at practice again on Tuesday, missing his second straight day due to illness. Doc Rivers said he “has no idea” if Barbosa will be available off the Celtics bench Wednesday when they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves at TD Garden. … Doc Rivers, after letting assistant Armond Hill run practice on Monday and just watching, was back running the show on Tuesday. … Also back on Tuesday at practice were Jason Terry and Paul Pierce, who worked out early Monday morning but did not practice with the team. Kevin Garnett also returned to practice on Tuesday after taking Monday off.

You guys are lame for putting this poll up.

    WHO “EXPLETIVE” CARES

  • 123Star

This poll is bogus.  If I were owner, this guy Beckett would be traded promto.

Shows you how much of a team player he is, cannot except responisbilty for his actions.

No excuses for a guy getting paided so much. I think lackey was the poison pill and it rubbed

of on others, such as Buchholtz and Lester. I hope Bobby V sees thru it all.

The birth of a child is a once in a lifetime thing, and it’s their first kid too. Yes, I’d think just about anyone in that situation is going to be distracted, nervous, concerned for the wife’s well-being etc. If he gets distracted by the kitchen renovation, that’s another thing entirely….

    • Spinninghorsevideo

Yeah, right. Well, what about soldiers in the field of battle; would the birth of a first-born give them the right to abandon their fellow soldiers when the bullets and shells were flying. Yes, the birth of a child is, indeed, a wonderful thing; it should not be demeaned by a second-rate, mediocre, overpaid crybaby pitcher who uses this occurrence to justify him drinking beer, eating chicken and not showing up mentally for games.

This a fraud poll, for a fraud story. Having taken PR 101 in college, I see this as WEEI’s evaluation of the effectiveness of latest spin efforts from Beckett/Bradford. How about pointing out that lots of major leaguers have kids, yet somehow manage to not embarrass themselves in September?

This is stuiped on so many levels. Beckett should just keep his mouth shut with stuff like this. Every one who has a family puts it first but that dont meen he isnt very focused an passionate about his job an team. I do feel like he just wont take responsibilities for his actions an this is a huge problem. He could be a even bigger cancer to this club then we ever thought. Lacky is a huge problem but Beckett could be just as bad. I no Bucholz thinks hes the greatest thing since Pedro an that his head is huge an he needs to come down to earth a little an get alot maturer. He too may be a big problem as well. I think Lester is an will be fine.

I would try an trade Beckett ( assuming he is a HUGE problem in the club house) but only at the right price. I wouldnt give him away. I would want fair market value for him. Plus we probally wouldnt want prospects back because we are a playoff team an already thin with good ML SP so unless we could deal him for a another good SP in or use the prospects to get him in a deal to get another SP I would sit tight. I would be all for getting a top SP prospect ready or just about ready for the show like Shelby Miller. But that one aint happening.

Beckett did not deliver the on the field performance for which he was well paid. By his view, a surgeon who has family issues on his mind should not be solely focused on his job. By his standards. it would be ok for that surgeon not to perform professionally and give 100 percent. If Becket wanted to focus on his familly, he should have taken an unpaid sabbatical from the team.

And he likely gets paid much more than a surgeon. Or, how about our soldiers in Afghanistan? Do they not have family issues on their minds most of the time. And,  yet, they find the personal fortitude and dedication to perform heroically on the field of battle. But, the way that whiney Beckett sees it, its ok if he sloughs off, all because his wife was having a baby. What a baby Beckett is.

Of course, the whole team, with the exception of Pedroia, is a bunch of overpaid, oversensitive crybabies. Go ahead Beckett. Whine and whine; it’ll make it easier for me to root against you when you’re pitching. That kind of arrogance deserves a losing record. In my book, you are far from the team’s top pitcher.

This year, what’s next? Oh, your young child has a cold; that’ll be enough to throw you into a tizzy and give you the right to under-perform. Really. The more I see these Red Sox whine, the more I’m looking for a baseball team with true winners.
