Jason Terry praises Paul Pierce, blasts LeBron James 12.20.12 at 1:10 am ET
By

Two months after his 35th birthday, Celtics captain Paul Pierce scored 40 points on 16 shots in Wednesday night’s 103-91 victory against the Cavaliers. It took a superhuman effort, as his three most veteran teammates can attest. Maybe that’s why Jason Terry called him Kryptonite in the locker room afterwards.

Pierce, Terry, Kevin Garnett and Jason Collins have a combined 55 years of NBA experience between them, but this was a first. The Celtics captain became the oldest player in franchise history to eclipse 40 points in a regulation game (at 35 and three months, Larry Bird scored 49 in double overtime in 1992).

“Not a lot of guys in this league stay in one franchise,” said Terry. “You can count them on your hand right now. It’s not many that are superstars, that have been in the league longer than 12-13 years, and he’s one of them.”

Terry played his last eight seasons alongside one of those other guys in Dirk Nowitzki, who has stayed in Dallas ever since being selected one spot ahead of Pierce in the 1998 NBA draft. There’s a certain respect among veterans around the league for loyalty like that, Terry said, especially after younger superstars like LeBron James and Dwight Howard jumped ship for the Heat and Lakers early in their careers over the past several years.

As Terry elaborated, Pierce has demonstrated a “willingness to stick through the tough times and not just jump off: ‘I’m outta here.’ ‘I’m going to go join forces with Kobe [Bryant].’ Or, ‘I’m going to go play with Dwyane Wade.’ That’s a shot right there. … I think that’s what guys look at, and they respect him.”

How’s this for respect? Pierce joined Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, Clyde Drexler, Alex English, Karl Malone, Reggie Miller and Walter Davis as the only players since 1985 to scored 40 points in regulation after turning 35 years old. None of the others accomplished that feat on 16 shots.

“Paul was on fire tonight, man,” added Garnett, who was traded to Boston after 12 up-and-down seasons for the Timberwolves. “Paul had a flashback to like ’03 or ’04 or something, man. It was good to see, though. As we walked in tonight, I could tell — just because it was a long day — that he felt kind of down in the dumps. After the game, I told him, ‘You need to feel more down in the dumps a little more often.’ But he had the rhythm going, and we were just trying to feed him. I thought he did a good job getting it out of the offense and letting it come to him.”

Give him some time to work on himself he’ll be back

  • Obvious

He needs to work on his drinking tolerance so that he can fit in with Lackey and the boys.  They sent him down to Pawtucket to be closer to the breweries.

       Idiot!!!

    • Kenkarken

This post is what the problem is with jackass fans. Why don’t you just stick to commenting on something you know a thing or two about like Lawn Darts and keep your juvenile posts to yourself. MORON!!

  • Johnny Spygate

When did your Sox become the Bengals?

  • Shennessey

The sox organization is much dumber then anybody could have imagined. Why would anybody give a injured player 142 million dollars? This guy will never come back to what he was, which even at his best wasn’t worth half that contract anyway. This organization is a train wreck, maybe they should have a beer and some chicken

  • Tonyfranco

The problem with making a mistake on Crawford is that it will not only cost you $148MM but also cost you Jacoby Ellsbury.

  • AL34

This team is looking like idiots more everyday with this issue the Carpenter issue, the Lackey issue. Has anyone ever heard of a medical staff and examination and actually reading a report. This was a hell of an investment for a guy with a bad wrist who looks like a shell of himself when he played in Tampa. Even letting Adrian Gonzalez participate in thehomerunserby and taking an extra 100 swings. How did that decision look when September came around and we needed his bat to carry the team. Then Titogiving him time off out of the lineup because he was tired.

    • Bhdyer20

Quick everyone over react to everything the Red Sox do!  The Lackey issue?  The guy got hurt while here has nothing to do with the medical staff.  Everyone is acting like they know for sure that Carpenter was injured before coming here but nobody actually knows that except for the actual doctors.  I am also pretty sure the doctor’s don’t just run randomn MRI’s on guys elbows as part of routine physicals so probably nothing there to tell them he was hurt.  Tito rested Gonzalez because he was tired?  When?  The guy played in 159 games, that’s right Tito rested him a whopping 3 times all season.  Just foolishness going on right now.

     Theo strikes again.

  • ded sox

The superb Sox medical team prescribed a steady diet of beer and fried chicken. Face it. Without Schilling in 2004 and 2007, the Sox would still be battling Theo’s Cubs 4 a century of frustration at a crappy ballpark.

I remember when, many years ago, O’s mgr. Earl Weaver called Benny Ayala, a journeyman O’s ballplayer, the Mexican Babe Ruth. Within days, after it was hyped by the media everywhere, the O’s traded Ayala 4 a great deal.  Weaver said, tongue in cheek, that his statements were SUBJECT 2 CHANGE DAILY. Joe Madden of Tampa Bay repeated history when he said if Boston signed free agent CC, the fans would ADORE him. Sox r suckers !

The biggest problem with Crawford is in his head.

  • Anthony

What a bunch of clowns !! were is the commitment here

  • Deano42

Thanks for releasing the wrist injury information the day after my fantasy draft. If they knew that all summer he was going to be late to start the year then why all the stories about him being ahead of schedule?

  • Tjfdc

When we were pursuing Carl as a free agent, we knew he had intermediate wrist soreness in his time
There is no such thing as intermediate wrist pain, there is intermittent wrist pain.  Transcription error I hope!

  • PATSOX

Ross won’t hit many HR, this spring was a fluke. Solid ball player though.

    • Bharvishsom

in platoon role 15…….but his will average goin up/ in the long run platooning will fit him better

  • Chrisindanvers

Solid pick up and player. He definitely fills a need for the team. I heard earlier this week on WEEI the debate if he was better than J.D. Drew last year…..I couldn’t believe I was actually hearing Ordway say no….then perhaps they were similar.

Strong pick up. He may be older, but he has been hitting, playing defense, and actually playing. He is not going to be the best outfielder they have, but is a great piece. He has also played in some pressure games for the Giants, who don’t have too many.

  • Mail

I would rather see Cook in the rotation starting game 4 if Beckett is out with Aceves as the closer if Bailey is out.  And this, only because we apparently are insistent on giving Bard his chance as a starter, instead of as a closer.

  • Jfd23

Don’t worry, the Ravens have their Sunday night game against the Pats circled on their calander. They have something to prove after the bitter loss in the AFC title game. Very similar to last year when the Ravens flattened Pittsburgh in the first game of the year. They had something to prove against the Steelers and they did.

    • droofus

And that is why they fail.   They steamroll the Steelers – a game they’re amped for – and then lose to the Jaguars – a game they are not.   If they beat those Jaguars, the championship game would have been at M&T, not Gillette.  Given the closeness of the game, even a Pats fan like myself has to admit that would have made a difference.

Look, I have no doubt they’re going to come out guns blazing against the Pats on that SNF game.   But that game is worth exactly as much in the standings as the 1:00pm game two weeks later against KC.   The Pats know this.   Do the Ravens?

  • Ftbrown44

It’s pitiful, Terry wants name in papers, Talk evil about Lebron James The Best Player in The NBA!! Betcha noone ever called Terry that.!

  • Fenian

RF couple of good players and McDonald…LF Crawford should have a better year…SS have Aviles and if things go bad Iglesias will get the call…bullpen has some decent arms especially if Aceves is there…and there are 7 legitimate potential starters for 5 spots…

Yeah having too many decent players is SUCH A PROBLEM…get a grip…

Last year we were the best team in the majors until Sept. with Lackey/Matsuzaka/Wakefield et al pitching at the back end of the rotation…so it can’t get worse than that!

Let them play some games before you get your panties in a bunch…
