Paul Pierce: Jared Sullinger at All-Star weekend is a ‘no-brainer’ 01.14.13 at 9:15 pm ET
By

Entering Monday, there wasn’t a hotter rookie in the NBA than Jared Sullinger. The first-year player out of Ohio State was a huge reason the Celtics bench had awoken from its slumber and helped the Celtics run off five straight wins. Sullinger had back-to-back double-doubles against the Suns and Rockets and is averaging 25.5 minutes per game in the first six games of January.

Sullinger is fourth among all rookies in rebounding at 5.9 rebounds per game and tied for fourth in double-doubles with three. But perhaps most significant to the Celtics is the contribution he’s made as a rookie on a team with championship expectations. Anthony Davis (New Orleans), Andre Drummond (Detroit) and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Charlotte) are all on teams that will likely be watching the playoffs on TV in the spring.

Celtics captain Paul Pierce said there is no doubt in his mind Sullinger should be part of NBA All-Star weekend activities when a team of the best rookies take on a team of the best second-year players in Houston.

“I think that’s like a no-brainer,” Pierce said with a smile. “In the rookie class, I can’t even name five quality rookies. [Sullinger] is playing well and playing significantly for the ball club. I definitely think he should be there.”

  • Hi

    number 5 starter.

  • Hesher

Bring Cook up and leave Bard in the pen, easy peasy

    • Cmummery

Why not puy put Cook in as the set up guy HMMMM he is a ground ball pitcher induces the double ball. That could get them out of jams with runners on late in games. leave Bard where he is.

  • AndyP

They might use him in long relief for a while to see if the bullpen stabilizes without Bard.

  • Benny

Fortunately the big club has so many great starters that they just don’t need another..why move Bard to the pen and bring up Cook to win games when they won last night. I love this team…W.S. here we come …YIPPEEEE.

  • ih8sno

Bard to the pen, Cook goes to the 5 hole in the rotation. Both fill exactly what this team needs.  Why is this so hard?!

    • Chickey19

      Tell that to Bard.

  • thebear76

Well, their starters and relievers have been so great, this has to be a REALLY HARD DECISION, BEN. Forces their hand???? Like they have a hand to play, for C—– sake. What they are discussing up in the golded Fenway offices is a mystery to me. I would love to see one bold move made by these people (which this isn’t) to shake these idiots out of their slumber. A big trade to get rid of the problem children… Lester, Beckett, Youk, etc. If any one says “you can’t trade a 1 or 2 starter,  it’ll ruin the rotation”, HOW MUCH WORSE can it be?????

Ben Van Winkle will wake up in about September and then think about making a decision. Or maybe he’ll wait until the pretty people stop wanting to be seen at Fenway. Then Larry will roust him up (or out).

i am quaking in my shoes waiting for this TOUGH decision to go down !…..theres just to much talent with the parent club on the pitching staff ….lol

bring up Cook and Lavarnway (ship out MacDonald (now that we have Byrd) and Shoppach….move Bard to the bullpen as the closer to stabilize it…use Aceves as set up man (less pressure on him)….such moves make us a stronger team.

    • Dano50

In his limited duty (which should be your first clue) Shoppach is batting .375.  Why bring Lavarnway up now?  Lavarnway is hitting well (.286) but most importantly he is playing regularly and getting valuable experience.

  • Dano50

Bard needs Bobby V to sit Bard down and explain the tough facts of life in the big leagues to the young man.  His time will come, but the team needs him in the pen for now.  This is precisely WHY you have a manager.

  • RockieHonk

    Make Cook your closer.. ha!

  • Jpbulldog

Talk about a back-handed compliment.  “I can’t even name five quality rookies”.  Congratulations!  Your team captain thinks you are good to exceed a really low standard.
