Did Danny Ainge deny Leandro Barbosa’s trade request? 01.17.13 at 2:19 pm ET

Leandro Barbosa

Celtics guard Leandro Barbosa asked Danny Ainge to be either traded or released, but the C’s president of basketball operations “will not let me go,” Barbosa told a Brazilian sports radio station (h/t CelticsBlog).

Here’s the rough Portuguese-to-English translation from Google Chrome:

“I will not lie to you: I tried to get out several times, but Danny Ainge does not want to let me go,” Barbosa told Bradesco Sports FM. “He’s a guy that admires my basketball skills for many years. I was supposed to have got a good contract with the Boston Celtics, but did not. He will not let me go.”

The fifth guard on the roster after Avery Bradley’s return to the backcourt, Barbosa’s 10.7 minutes and 4.9 points per game are both career lows, and Celtics coach Doc Rivers failed to bring the explosive scorer off the bench on Wednesday until it was too late in a game tailored for his instant offense.

“I should’ve played LB earlier when we were struggling for energy,” Rivers said after the 90-78 loss to the Hornets. “He’s an energy guy. It was easy [to say] now, obviously, but that’s what I’ll probably see when I watch the film.”

In the final 2:35 of the fourth quarter, Barbosa scored seven points on four shots. His 36-minute averages of 16.5 points (44.2 FG%, 39.3 3P%), 4.1 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.2 steals aren’t far off from 2006-07, when he won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year honor, and they’re superior across the board to fellow offensive-minded guard Jason Terry‘s 36-minute averages of 12.8 points (42.5 FG%, 36.1 3P%), 2.9 assists, 2.5 boards and 1.2 steals.

Then again, the C’s committed $15 million over the next three seasons to the 35-year-old Terry and only spent the $1.2 million veteran minimum on the 30-year-old Barbosa for this year. It’s pretty clear why Barbosa would want out of Boston, and it’s evident why Ainge & Co. would want to keep him around for insurance purposes.

Evidently frustrated by being pigeonholed mainly into a backup point guard role behind Rajon Rondo rather than the 2-guard position he thrived in alongside Steve Nash in Phoenix from 2003-10, Barbosa added: “A lot will happen. In a little while, you will hear a firecracker there.”

(Oddly, Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap recently compared the two point guards earlier this week: “[Rondo] puts the ball in the middle of the paint and operates there. So, he’s like a post guy. He [essentially] makes a post pass to himself, much like Nash. He just puts it exactly where he wants it, and he distributes.”)

Barbosa’s comments sure sound like he could present a problem that’s not going to go away anytime soon. How much this weighs on the locker room could force Ainge’s hand into finding a trade partner or releasing Barbosa outright. You’ll remember Ainge dropped the less valuable Jermaine O’Neal after similar grumblings last season.

You know the pitching staff is having an epic struggle when the offense scores 11 but the play of the game is Pedroia pulling a DP out of his hat with the bases loaded on our umpteenth reliever. Bailey please get well soon! Meanwhile, come on up the interstate to Fenway, Mr. Cook–we could use your sinker in these situations!

The worst part about this is that the guy who doesn’t fit well so far is Terry. Lee is coming around and contributing and Barbosa has been great off the bench at times. Terry just looks old. He isn’t shooting well and he can’t defend. Of course, if Terry starts shooting lights-out, he will be the better piece. I haven’t seen anything that would lead me to believe that is going to happen. The opponents just make Terry go left so he can’t pull up for a jumper. When he goes left he has to pass it. He has not been hitting the spot up shot well at all. Barbosa can break down a defense and shoot from the outside.

Barbosa is right. I would be mad too if I knew I could play and was being wasted on the bench. Unlike Belichick, Doc Rivers does not do what is best for the team to win because clearly Barbosa is the best choice for backup PG for this team when they need energy and he is not being used. I don’t like how players are being used by Doc Rivers.

He doesn’t play any defense, he is a spark of instant offense though. I don’t see his minutes going up any time soon

sorry but this more of an chemistry issue..
..if the clips can have a deeper bench then the c’s..
yet they all play together and could care less about
playing time or scoring well no wonder the clips are
one of the best teams..the c’s lack chemistry and
refuse to move without the ball in their individual hands..

and terry is a gawd awful defender.
    ..nor is he shooting well..

Sounds like business as usual to me.  On almost every team in the NBA there’s a backup who feels like he isn’t getting enough minutes and money.  The difference is, not all of them whine about it in another country thinking no one around here will hear it.

Sure I’d like to see him get a better situation, but not at cost of my team.  If Rondo sprains an ankle in the next game and Terry continues to suck, who do you think will be playing point?

It’s Danny’s job to do what’s best for the team.  If Barbosa had such a problem with the contract, maybe he shouldn’t have signed here when many other teams were interested in him.

Edit: sorry didn’t mean to post this “in reply to c’sfan”. just meant to post it generally.

LOL and now he has been shown the reports and he denied ever making the comments… yet the conversation was recorded and the audio is available.  hahahaha.

Didn’t Barbosa know when he signed here that there wasn’t going to be many minutes for him?

i cant blame LB either. Ive said this many times, i love doc but I dont think he utilizes his roster to its full potential. Barbosa has proven that he can impact games in small spurts yet his playing time is regulated to garbage time. Either way, this guy has some value either with us or someone else. I doubt he will be here passed trade deadline. Danny will try to move him..

I agree. If Doc is going to be stubborn and make no use of a good bench player then at least get something for him.

I kinda agree. I’ve been saying since he got here that he should be getting the minutes. It seems like every time he comes off the bench, he’s an instant spark & he can score. He’s pretty much wasting away on the bench. This guy can still play.

Barbosa knew what he was getting into when he signed with Boston.  However, there are times when Rondo plays flat and LB would be a good change of pace player.  That is what Doc has to realize and play LB some minutes every game 5 or 10.  Last night was a perfect example of a Rondo flame out (too many Turnovers).  Two totally different styles would mess up a defense.  So Doc, throw the rotation crap out the window and coach by the flow of the game.

Interesting story and I wonder how much of it is entirely true. If you go back to the stories when Barbosa signed, you will see indications that he knew he would not get much playing time. At the time, he was a late signee and did not have too many offers. He had suggested that he wanted to be part of a team that had a chance in the playoffs and did not mind if he did not play too much. So, it seems like this story is slightly inconsistent.

That being said, he has show flashes of being a solid player, he can run up the floor with the best of them, and he is a former 6th man of the year…so he probably should play a bit more here. It would not surprise me if he finds more time. Likewise, when all is said and done and the Celtics probably trade for another big (more likely than not, they will), it would not surprise me if he is part of the deal.

We saw this before with Dice-K and the Japan media.  IMO this is a case of a player talking to the media in his homeland trying to save a little face and figuring the comments won’t be noticed across the border.

Really if the guy wanted out he’d be telling the local media.

Much ado about nothing. Go read Jessica Camerato’s fabulous piece about Barbosa and you will be rooting for him no matter what happens!
