Kyrie Irving, Cavaliers keep Celtics reeling 01.22.13 at 9:30 pm ET
By

Paul Pierce and the Celtics found themselves tied up with Kyrie Irving all night in Cleveland. (AP)

Kyrie Irving scored a game-high 40 points and Tristan Thompson added 21 as the Cavaliers added to the misery of the Celtics with a 95-90 win at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Irving completely dominated the Celtics in the final six minutes, scoring nine points and helping the Cavaliers win for just the 11th time in 43 games. After a season-high six-game winning streak, the Celtics lost their fourth straight and are again under .500 at 20-21. Rajon Rondo led the Celtics with 17 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists.

Making matters worse, the Cavaliers were playing without their starting center Anderson Varejao, who was ruled out for the season this week due to a blood clot in his lower right lung.

Paul Pierce had 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while Jared Sullinger had another big game off the bench with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Garnett was the only other Celtic in double figures in scoring with 16 points, as Boston shot just 38.1 percent from the field.

Defense was non-existent in the first quarter as the Celtics allowed the Cavaliers to shoot 59.1 percent, as Cleveland made 13-of-22 shots from the floor in building a 31-27 lead. The Celtics cut the deficit to 54-53 at the half.

The Celtics built their lead up to six 64-58 early in the third on back-to-back threes from Avery Bradley but couldn’t pull away.

Irving’s pull-up jumper in transition gave the Cavaliers a 76-75 lead with 7:30 remaining but Pierce found an open Rondo moments later for a layup to give the Celtics the lead right back. Sullinger picked up his fifth foul with just under six minutes remaining and the Cavaliers immediately began their charge behind Irving.

The Cavaliers reassumed the lead 82-81 when Pierce missed a jumper and Tyler Zeller raced out on the break for a layup. But again it was Rondo who answered, this time with a layup with just over four minutes remaining, as the Celtics went back in front, 83-82. Rondo then drew Irving’s fifth foul when he took a charge with 3:30 remaining. But the Celtics couldn’t convert as Garnett missed with the shot clock winding down.

Irving’s reverse layup with 2:30 left gave Cleveland the lead again, 84-83. Replays showed rookie Zeller kicking the ball ahead to Irving but no violation was called and the basket stood. Irving scored 15 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter as he took control of the game.

Then Rondo committed a mental mistake on a loose ball that careened into the Celtics backcourt. He tried to throw it off Irving but was unsuccessful, allowing Irving to go in for an uncontested layup with just over two minutes left.

Garnett drew the sixth foul of the night on Zeller with 1:30, with Garnett hitting both free throws cutting Cleveland’s lead to one, 88-87. With a chance to give Boston the lead, Garnett missed a baseline fallaway jumper. That led to another spectacular coast-to-coast drive by Irving to put Cleveland up, 90-87, with 52.9 seconds remaining.

this team  is done. talented on paper but they have so many flaws to fix.

    • Sicko

Hey moron, are you the one that predicted the Patriots at 6-10?!?

Get off these boards you New York loving douch e.

  • Really33

    wow

  • kenn2013 celtic life

The Celtics Need To get they’re priorities straight every single player starts off with pierce he is slaking cant get a basket to go in. they need to go to the rim if they wanna get somewhere im a big celtic fan i would hate to see them go down like this they have all the talent i dont see what the problem is. Doc needs to have a talk with everyone instead of demanding trades!

    • Doug

They have quit, simple as that, no drive, no fire, just a bunch of slackers that don’t care.

  • The_Public

The Celtics are completely miserable.  Doc Rivers had a big piss fest that there were players not playing hard last game two nights ago.  Nothing changed they came out flat again tonight.  Two of the players that are playing like crap are Rondo and Pierce way too many turnovers.  Bass shouldn’t be starting or playing this much, he CAN”T Rebound. Where is Jeff Green and Jason Terry?  All of these players should be considered for trades (even though I don’t want to see Pierce go).  The Celtics need length.  Ainge needs to crank up the talks with the Suns to get Gortat.  The refs made two bad calls down the stretch tonight vs. the Cavs, but why is the game this close?  I know that no team is going to take Terry in a trade alone, so good luck Danny, this team is unwatchable and can’t contend as they are.  Here is who you don’t trade – Sullinger.  He is a beast.

  • Baker

I think Doc needs to explore the idea of starting Jeff Green. He needs his minutes, and I think he can provide some offense if given the opportunity.

  • joeysmithidea

agree with baker start Green! Gives Him more Confidence

  • Matt

I’d take Kyrie Irving over Rondo if Cleveland management was dumb enough to do a Rondo for Irving swap. We’d be getting a better all-around kid on and off the court (including attitude) who is tearing it up on a team comprised mostly of nobodies. He’s scary good right now, and it’s scary to think how good he’d be if surrounded by 1 or 2 other all-star caliber players.

    • Baker

That’s the problem. Kyrie is tearing it up ON A TEAM OF NOBODIES. Plenty of players can do that ex: K-Mart playing for the Kings, Lin with the Knicks last year, etc. Rondo runs the C’s offense. I know his assists are down as of late, but I attribute that to guys missing shots.
The real problem here is, and I love the guy but honestly, Doc Rivers. He needs to set a rotation in stone. Ex: One night Green or Lee will play 20-30 minutes, tear it up and drop 13-18 points. The next night they’ll get 10 minutes and a couple baskets. Enough of trying to split minutes equally, LOCK IT DOWN. 2 UNITS. 1. Rondo, Bradley, Pierce, Green or Sully, KG. 2. Lee, Terry/Barbosa, Bass/Sully/Green, Wilcox.
Also, (and as you may have guessed, I’m a fan of Jeff Green’s game) when Green is out with the second unit, they need to start feeding him the ball and let him go to work in the low post or from 15-18 feet out. I’m sick of watching him waiting behind the 3 point line and never touching the ball.

      • Sicko

Baker I know they turned it around last year but when Doc keeps ripping on his players you know something is seriously wrong. Green is what he is and that’s a once in a while game changer. The problem is he has a great game and then 3 bad ones. He’s the ultimate tease. Hate to say it but Danny needs to either break it up or make a big trade that involves changing the culture of this team. Just not sure this team can contend for anything other than a lower tier playoff spot.

    • San Diego Dreamer

      Dream on.

  • Bruinman86

Guess that 6 game win streak was an anomaly.

    • Baker

No Bruinman, it wasn’t an anomaly. 4 of the 6 teams that they beat are playoff teams, and this streak would not be 4 games wrong save for bullspit officiating in that Chicago game. I can break this losing streak down to one reason, the health of Avery Bradley, plain and simple.

      • Bruinman86

Bradley is a solid player, but should 1 player make this much difference? It shows that there is a fundamental problem with the rest of the team committing to defense. When Bradley comes off the floor for a break, the bench should be able to hold a lead. Team seems lazy or tired to me.

  • jaypop

Well they looked old , tired and disinterested . big time trades will not be happening, nobody wants what we have. Untouchables have to be Sully, Melo and AB. Pierce coming off the bench and DA  giving Doc the order to play the youth, run run run..

  • Js Spam

Never expected this from the off season moves. I dont know what to think of Green at this point. He shows flashes but he is already 27 and should be at his peak.. and hes not even close. Pierce needs a vacation. I love him but he cant do it right now. I havent said this in the last 5 years but Id like to see the team make a move. At this point the only guys I wouldnt want to trade are sullinger, AB and KG.

    • Js Spam

..also.. i wouldnt want to bring up Melo right now. He has alot of momentum going in the D league and i dont think introducing him to this mess would be good for his on court and off court development..

  • Geetsolboy

Our cat barfed up a hair ball on the carpet just as this game ended. Very fitting.

  • Baker

A few things. 1. DA can’t trade KG, he has a No Trade clause in his contract. 2. I agree with jpop and Js Spam, Pierce needs a break. After averaging damn near 20ppg for most of the season, he is tired. Jpop is right, I think (only for a little while) Doc should experiment with bringing Pierce off the bench and starting a rotation of: Rondo, AB, Green, Sully, and KG as the anchor. It must be unbelievably frustrating for Rondo when nobody runs the fast break with him. Just take a look at the Bulls game, he is down the court in 4 seconds and laying in the bucket, while the rest of the team hasn’t even crossed half court. Lets see them speed it up with a Run and Gun, and let KG anchor the D on the other end. 3. This team needs time to recoup. I predict that after the AS break, we’ll see a different team. (I hope I’m right)

    • Js Spam

i agree but they could trade KG if he waived his clause to go to a contender.. i wouldnt want to see that happen though

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NM46GKNZIKFDM3OY7EIMXR26AI Bob-Omb

I don’t know why everyone has been waiting for this team to turn it around.  They haven’t quit, they’re just old and mediocre and they don’t mesh well on the court.  Teams don’t just turn it around like that in the NBA.  Either you’re good or you aren’t, and this team isn’t.

  • Mal Tempo

Danny Ainge will be dressing up as the Grim Reaper this week and stalking the players who will be sent packing to a better world.

  • Boston_Sports

Yup, guaranteed contracts. The downfall of professional sports. Win or Lose, $$$ keep on coming.

  • chrisindanvers

Tough to watch this team at the moment. They seriously are one of the most talented teams on paper, but for some reason it is not clicking. There are not enough guys with emotion on this team (a la Perk, Eddie House, Big Baby, Rasheed, Nate Robinson, Pietrus or Dooling) to get this team where it mentally needs to be.

Too bad, because if they found a way to ever jump start this – it is almost a bit too late now – it would be a tough team to beat.

Glad the Bruins are back, or it would be a rough winter.

  • Wes’s wife

Come on Danny time to get something for Pierce while we can. Bring Cousins in.

  • yazorrbird

Time to shop KG and Paul for something, anything, and get the rebuild under way.
