Celtics deny Marv Albert’s accusation that they use artificial crowd noise; what do you think? 01.25.13 at 11:15 am ET
By

In the midst of the Celtics’ fifth straight loss on Thursday, TNT broadcaster Marv Albert made multiple comments that the Celtics were pumping fake crowd noise into TD Garden, noting that the cheering seems disproportionately loud when many fans are sitting down.

Do the Celtics use artificial crowd noise at TD Garden?

  • No (45%, 330 Votes)
  • Yes (30%, 219 Votes)
  • I don't know, but I like to vote in polls (25%, 191 Votes)

During a drawn-out discussion about the subject, Albert told analyst Steve Kerr: “It’s artificial. It’s absurd. And they do it here all the time.”

Albert pointed out what he felt was taped applause after a Paul Pierce basket, and he noted that there were fake boos as well: “First it was cheers. And then when Carmelo [Anthony] got the ball, there’s no question someone touched a button [for boos].”

The Celtics tweeted a denial of Albert’s accusations, insisting that the team has never used artificial crowd noise.

After the game, Albert tried to play down his comments.

“It seems that way, but they say no,” Albert said after the C’s 89-86 loss to the Knicks. “There’s times when it seems like there is suddenly a bump in the sound. But I really don’t want to make a big deal out of it.”

I think Marv needs to look up at the jumbo-tron.  He’d see that the spikes in noise correlate with the “Noise meter” thing being played.  That’s the only time it gets loud there during the first half of a game.

I think Marv has been to enough live games to rule out the jumbo tron as the reason for the sudden noise increase.  Jumbo trons at every arena attempt to pump up the fans, so I’m sure he’s more than aware of the factor that plays with the noise levels.  Clearly he’s hearing things beyond the obvious messages from the jumbo tron, but whether what he hears is genuine or artificial, who knows, except for specific people in the celtics camp.

  • CantWaitTilNoMoreStern

If you don’t want to make a big deal about it, then why would you waste 5 minutes of air time talking about it? TNT announcers are useless… They rarely give you good basketball information, and they’re clearly in Stern’s back pocket.

    • Celtics1975

      Amen to that, where’s walton.

  • jb

Brendan nailed it…Marv, look up buddy, when a noise meter goes on the jumbotron everyone starts going crazy no matter what is happening

  • Celtics1975

An you could tell who he was pulling 4. An didnt he assult some chich in the mid or late 90, the guy’s truly a class act..

  • YeahHeLovesThePantyScent

I think Marv has to worry more about sniffing panties and wearing ladies clothes , his areas of expertise, and less on crowd noise .

  • BiteMe

    “It’s absurd”

Wrong Marv.  What IS absurd is that the police let you take your mugshot with your bad toupe still on.

  • Beavis

Fake boos, really?!? Lol, I was there a couple of weeks ago and the only time it got really loud was when they ran that crowd noise meter on the jumbo tron. Of course, Albert being a New York butt boy has nothing to do with his rant.

  • nupike

I’ve been to a decent number of Celtics games and I always suspected that they pumped in crowd noise.  I think Marv is right on, and I don’t think this is something the Celtics would admit that they do.

  • Dano50

Is Marv still a “biter”?  Inquiring minds want to know!

  • Boring Media Hype

Again, a story about nothing because these writers have nothing better to do.  What has this got to do with the sport????

  • Wheeler

i believe it.  the montreal canadiens do it all the time when chara touches the puck, the pipe in the boos

  • jaypop

Marv you need to shoot that thing on the top of your head !!  TNT is a horrible station to watch any game. Announcers talk about any thing but the dam game , their camera work stinks. They shrink the game picture constantly for something that could just be listened to. Last and most least is the interviews done by the idiot in the clown suits.  All in all TNT you suck !!!!

  • CoryLidle

The accusations are coming from a NY announcer.  NY…the place they can’t sell out MLB Playoff games.  Truth hurts.

    • Coolmt02

If Yankee stadium held only 35,000-ish seats, they’d sell out every game like the Sox

      • Danny Ainge

         Moron

I’m a huge C’s fan, but they probably DO use some fake crowd noise.  Apart from the noisemeter that others have mentioned, people just aren’t loud at Celtics games.  I don’t think they pipe in noise all the time, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they do it for something like a nationally televised game against a divisional opponent.  Fans in this area have gotten so lame in the past 10 years, and this was never a Celtics town to begin with, except for that one time when they were winning with white guys.

    • Beavis

”..this was never a Celtics town to begin with, except for that one time when they were winning with white guys.”

Get that racist **** off this site.

    • Sicko

Yeah, I guess they weren’t cheering back in 2008 because most of the guys were black along with their coach. Come on guy smarten up….

    • Js Spam

Bob-Omb – one of the dumbest things ive ever read on this site. I dont know where you live but in my neck of the woods the Cs have been huge over the last 6 years. Between friends and work, people only talk about Pats and Cs.. and Bs only when its playoff time.. no one talks much about sox anymore.. just the radio guys.

  • Donalmcl27

I  hope not, it seems a bit RedSoxian

  • Dansdrs

I listen to Albert last nigh & found very Pro NY & anti Boston not very professional for a national game broadcast

  • Dansdrs

Those wernt fake boos for Melo they were real

  • 364NKL

You don’t want to make a big deal about it?????  Screw you, Marv.  You don’t make comments like that on national tv without proof.

    • Coolmt02

Sure you do .. He just did and Steve Kerr, 5 time NBA champion agreed with him.

      • Danny Ainge

        Idiot

  • Johnny Spygate

Marv’s even older than UB.  Both are angry, constipated old men who get mad when their soup is served cold.  So what if the Garden pumps in noise.  It’s not a secret.  Let’s move on

    • Crime & Punishment

Such a smart@ss. Are you serious with this crap? Anyone who knows ANYTHING about basketball realizes that Marv Albert is pro-Knicks/anti-Boston Celtics.  The guy freakin’ called games at MSG for over 30 years for christ’s sake.  It’s not a secret.  Let’s move on.

  • John2375

You guys DO realize that the “noise meter” is fake, right?? There’s no decibel meter in there – they’re just doing what they can to get the crowd to cheer louder to reach the “old Garden level”. It’s all BS.

    • Sicko

Nah, they have a meter under everyone’s seat….Jon Meterparel maybe…..

  • tekton8

they’ve been doing that since the new building opened. bad teams make you do the unthinkable sometimes… a little surprised they’d have to do it on nationally televised knicks game, though

    • Beavis

”bad teams make you do the unthinkable sometimes…”

You do realize they won the championship in 2008 and lost in the finals in 2010, correct? Not sure where you get they have been a bad team for more than this year. Perhaps you just meant this year but you come off as a douch e.

  • RedSx799

He’s right, you know. Especially this year with the way the team has become dog food. Most teams do it. Green-Teamers just can’t see it because of the green-tinted glasses.

  • TheTruth99

Marv may bite but the celtics SUCK !!

    • Shennessey

       Much like your Mom…

  • Bruinman86

Even if they had, it sure didn’t help any.

  • Chrisindanvers

Marv Albert certainly has the right to state his opinion, but anyone who has ever been to the Garden in the past decade knows that it is highly unlikely that they pump in crowd noise. The place has so much other noise going on – between the timeout antics, the scoreboard action, and the NOISE METER – there is no need to add noise. In fact, when the team stunk, the same thing happened. Lots of noise all over the place. The crowd sound is not artificial….just heightened as part of the show that is the NBA.

  • Pedro

The Celts are a joke, as i watch them go from a 27 point lead to ten points down i can only wonder when are they going to blow up this mess of a team? Time to clean house and build for the future. They really are an awful team that has no shot at anything. Don’t think anybody is untouchable. Pierce, Garnett, Rondo, get rid of all of them, can they get any worst then what we saw tonight. Think about this, the Celts who needed this win badly get the hawks in a 27 point hole and lose the game. They have no spine

  • H Bouley

Yeah thats it artificial crowd noise! No wonder the Celts have the amazing record they do LOL
Actually what should happen is a league rule all Celtic games have a length of 46 minutes :)

  • markfromlynn

No doubt they pump in fake crowd noise…especially when you hear “DE-FENSE” or “LET’S GO CEL-TICS!” at the exact same tonality and volume game after game . By the way….I could care less if crowd noise is pumped in if the fans at the Garden are just sitting on their hands..

  • http://www.facebook.com/CMParce Chris Parcella

Well if anyone knows about things that are fake its Marv and his hair.

  • Hempman

The fact that I am sitting here, two days later, still voice-less due to screaming ‘wife beater’ and booing Melo on Thursday, makes me even more upset at Marv Alberts statements. The Celtics have the best fans in the game.
