Doc Rivers after Rajon Rondo injury: ‘You can write the obituary. I’m not’ 01.27.13 at 5:33 pm ET
By

After the Celtics’ 100-98, double-overtime win over the Heat on Sunday afternoon, Celts coach Doc Rivers explained that he didn’t tell his players the news of Rajon Rondo‘s torn ACL injury until after the game.

“Obviously the Rondo news is pretty tough,” Rivers said. “I knew it before the game; no one else knew it. I just didn’t think it was any time to tell any of our guys that. I told them after the game. Pretty emotional in the locker room.”

Rivers said Rondo went through the team’s walk-through earlier in the day, and actually believed the injury — suffered in Friday night’s loss to Atlanta — to be a hamstring issue. But after further examination by team medical director Brian McKeon, it was determined that the point guard had torn the ACL in his right knee.

It wasn’t until halftime that Rondo was informed the extent of his injury, according to Rivers.

“Very emotional. Very emotional,” the coach said of the player’s reaction. “Funny, at halftime, I knew, and didn’t know. Still. And because Dr. McKeon knew, but he hadn’t seen the MRI. But the technician had already told him. And Dr. McKeon told me, ‘Positive, but let’s wait.’ And so that was hard, too.”

Regarding the reaction of the players after he informed them of Rondo’s injury, Rivers said, “It was good, and then it went down. … I just walked in and told them. I don’t know what else you can do. Guys were celebrating and then it just …”

The Celtics coach still relayed optimism after the game, despite there be no pure point guard on the current roster whom might step in for Rondo.

“Well, you can write the obituary. I’m not,” Rivers said. “You can go ahead. But I’m not. We won tonight, and so the way I look at it is: we’re going to stay in there. In my opinion, we’re going nowhere.”

Should now trade Pierce and KG. Team is going nowhere this season.

    • Rondo4life

KG has a no trade clause he ain’t going anywhere unless he wants to

Just another excuse for getting Ainge and rivers off the hook for the lousy job they have been doing. If they get rid of both of them then is that called a triple-double. Basketball sucks and you are a loser if you watch the trailer trash playing the game.

Now that Rondo is hurt and will not be around, maybe Ray should come back!

  • thetruthlives

they made the ECF last year with rondo, a hobbled Ray, and Dooling at G once Bradley got hurt.  If you look at the Rondo injury as far as the guards that are left on the roster, they have way more talent still here at the guard position then they had last season when they went deep in the playoffs.  Bradley, Lee, Terry (given that he removes his head from his backside) and Barbosa are a formidable group, though they lack a true pg.  As Doc said, don’t write the obituary yet

i agree that last year’s team had no bench and between paul, bradley and ray injured, KG and Rondo had to carry the team.  However, even though we are a much deeper team, Rondo in the playoffs impacts the game more than any other player in the east aside from Lebron (at least last year he did and prob even the year before).  Rondo during the reg season is the 2nd best pg IMO behind cp3 or at the very least tied for 2nd with a few other pg’s, but when the playoffs start, Rondo is def the best pg and arguably the 3rd most important player to his team behind Lebron/Durant.  We should be a better team than what we’ve shown this year and I attribute that to so many new and/or healthy players trying to gel which becomes very difficult when you have a ten man rotation without enough minutes to go around.  At least now, Rondo’s 38min or so can be distributed to all the guards, as well as Jeff Green if you go big with Pierce or Green playing SOME sg while the other plays SF.  Bradley should also continue to improve quite a bit IMO as well as Sullinger.  We have a lot of good players and a couple hall of fame/boarder line all stars, but no superstar.  We won’t win a title so people can debate which direction we should go in, but I see no reason why we can’t be as good as Chicago without Rose, and the Sixers who also have no real superstar. Initiating the offense and bringing up the ball against full court pressure will be the real challenge and we’ll need LB and Pierce to take on a lot of that responsibility.

If there were takers for Pierce I would trade him.
His sloppy play and turnovers were the reason the game went to OT.
Jeff Green played well, he needs to play more and more and become a central part of the offense.
    time to phase Pierce out.

Losing Rondo should have been the signal for the Celts to pack it in and go for a chance at a high draft pick. But then they beat the Heat in 2 OTs. Cant they do anything right? LOL

  • Catman

catman says who cares about a profession where idiot fans care if someone who is way overpaid throws a ball in a hole.  why haven’t they played a game @ fenway yet ?  i’m not going to empty the litterbox until that happens.

  • Bruinman86

It will be interesting to see how the team plays going forward.  They sure were up for the game today.  My guess is Danny picks someone up from the scrapheap to fill the void for now.   Well, the trade deadline just got more interesting.
