Report: Clippers interested in trading for Kevin Garnett 02.03.13 at 3:08 pm ET
By

According to Sean Deveney of Sporting News, the Clippers have reached out to the Celtics about potentially acquiring Kevin Garnett.

Garnett does have the right to waive the no-trade clause in his contract.

The two Clippers players mentioned in the report, Bledsoe and Butler, are each average approximately nine points per game. The Clips’ point guard signed through the 2014-15 season (maxing out at just more than $3.75 million), while Butler’s deal stretches until after the ’13-14 campaign (paying him $8 million per season). The NBA trade deadline is Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. ET.

Should Celtics trade Garnett to Clippers in deal involving Butler/Bledsoe?

I’d dump Pierce and/or Rondo before I’d let Garnett go. Besides, without Rondo they look like they may be coming around….don’t give up on this season just yet.

    • Brian

Trading Rondo while he’s out for the year with an ACL tear is smart.  So smart.  Bet you’d get great value.  Good ideas.

  • Jonontime

YEAH RIGHT–then who will play defense and rebound?

  • Natedizel

If it was Caron Butler and Drew BLEDSOE its still a now….

  • Huh?

Doesn’t KG have a no trade clause?

    • Bruinman86

       He and Pierce do.

      • markfromlynn

Pierce does NOT have a no trade provision in his contract. There are only 4 players in the league with no trade clauses. KG,Kobe,Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitski

        • Bruinman86

No that’s interesting. I just saw that article myself today. Here’s a clip from the article posted on Celtics Blog when he signed a 4 year extension in 2010
“Happy news for the Celtics and us the fans. Paul Pierce is set up to retire as a Boston Celtic.
From updates (posted below) it sounds like they are still negotiating the terms surrounding the 4th year. I believe they are working on partially guaranteeing the 4th year.
The value to the Celtics is having the option to cut most of his salary from the books in the 4th year (or trade him to a team looking to cut payroll). The value to Pierce (other than the extra money) is getting a no-trade clause (that only kicks in if he signs for 4 years). Sounds like a win-win.”

KG can waive the no trade clause, if he wants to, allowing the trade.

      • markfromlynn

LOL…doesn’t matter what KG wants….Ainge decides who gets traded.

    • Whoknowsanymore

Yes, he does.  He would have to waive the clause.

  • Stephen

I hate hearing this crap after a great win!!let a team have a season without this looking toward the off season type of move.It takes the joy out of a win to hear crap like this!

  • I_hate_crime

DUMB move.  The Celtics need quality size. Garnett is the only quality big they have. Why trade to get smaller?

    TERRIBLE trade.

The talk the other day was should the Celtics trade Sullinger or Bradley. Is everyone nuts!!  Why trade young talent?

    • ScoopBurton

That’s right…Let’s keep him and see how good he is when he is 40

    • markfromlynn

Keep in mind..this report came from the LA side. For all we know,Ainge may have already told the Clippers no thanks.

  • Donalmcl27

         NO  !!!

  • Carlb

it’s already crowded at the SG spot. and we’re proving that having a pure PG isn’t as important as having a defensive player like KG. no

Not a total surprise that this report would surface after this game. No doubt, the two teams probably chatted about the deal the past day as well. I doubt the Celtics would do this trade anyway, particularly the way the team looks. However, as they get closer to the trade deadline, if the team falls apart – then I could see them listening to it.

Danny is not going to do this trade, unless a couple of things happen. KG says he would like to go there and finish out the year with the chance of a ring, then retire. And, the Clippers would have to offer more than that – probably Bledsoe and Jordan – to make the Celtics think about biting.

People….Think big picture here…one more week and we can get a much better deal for him…and the odds are pretty good what the Celts get back won’t be needing a walker to get up and down the court

  • markfromlynn

Trade their best big man and the anchor to their defense for yet another small forward and a point guard we don’t need? Yeah…great idea….NOT. If anything,I would like to see the Celts sign free agent Kenyon Martin for the remainder of the season. Martin will give them rebounding and the toughness inside that  no one else on the team currently provides.

By the time the draft rolls around,Rondo will be 4 months into his recovery from ACL surgery and Danny Ainge may have some interesting trade offers on draft day for Rondo. I would definitely entertain dealing Rondo for a top ten draft pick if a quality big is on the board.

  • 123Star

I’d say “Yes” to the trade !  Only that the Clippers would give the Celts a draft pick as well.
We do need a Center that can play minutes on the floor. KG is now limited to his minutes, so
the trade would give the Celts a good point guard and a strong forward.
When you think deeper, look at all the trading players the Celts could put together to get the men
    they are looking for.
There is NO one like KG, if you trade him, Pierce will go next. And if something comes up with Rondo of interest, we may be looking at a truly different team next year. Danny is able to piece
the team together. But just like it was when Bird-McHale-and Parrish were together, we never
wanted to see them ever leave either. Age talks….and there are rising stars coming !!!

The difference here is…Garnett is still performing at a high level. If the Celts could acquire a quality big to spell him KG could easily play another 2-3 yrs. Let’s remember…this isn’t some slow footed guy with a history of injuries. KG is still one of the best conditioned athletes in the league, age notwithstanding.

  • Bruinman86

Last thing we need is another Bledsoe in NE.

  • MR.MAJISTIC

deandre jordan and jamal crawford for K.G and barbosa…………yes

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IXKMFZWFCXJ6RGFDJRVYTQS5LM Big

Id do KG for Bledsoe and Jordan…..THAT would make SENSE.

    • Celtic rican

Me too thats the only deal we could do with the clippers

    • markfromlynn

Right…the Clippers will trade their 24 yr. old, starting center for 36 yr old KG. In what Universe does that make the Clippers a better team?

  • http://twitter.com/Ossurworld Russo

How reliable is a report from someone who cannot spell the name of Bledsoe correctly?

  • Marshallshouse74

Those are not the chips we need.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gregg.walker1 Gregg Walker

Why don’t they just throw in a bag of fisheads and rice too. NO!!!!!  KG is a Celtic until he retires and then his number hangs in the Gaaaaaaden

  • RickinNH

Continue kicking the tires on available big men to COMPLIMENT KG. A stronger rebounding and defensive presence is what we need, not another SG!

  • Whoknowsanymore

I think it would be a decent trade but I don’t understand why you would want to get smaller.  I would do the trade for Pierce because he still has trade value and is from Cali.

  • BostonBaby

I would trade the whole Celtics team for Blake Griffin, just saying

    • markfromlynn

It’s a good thing you don’t run the Celtics. By the way, where was Blake in crunch tme yesterday?

  • yazorrbird

No deals for anyone unless it is a 6’10″ wide body or a legitimate center.  Otherwise, Danny doesnt do anything significant.  Makes more sense not to make the playoffs.

  • Dfx523

Lets get real here…KG for Bledsoe and Butler is a joke, not gonna happen. Now KG for Jordan, Bledsoe and a # 1 is a different story. Secondly, PP is NOT going to be traded, end of discussion. The Celts will not include Rondo, AB, or Sully in any trade, they are the future. The guys to trade are Green, Terry, and Bass, and combination of two of them, they are expendable and can bring us back something good in return. Keep KG and PP, trade for Gortat, and go to war.
