Paul Pierce gets attitude adjustment and Celtics pull away 03.01.13 at 11:53 pm ET
By

Doc Rivers saw it. Paul Pierce knew it.

The Celtics captain was sulking in the third quarter as the Warriors came out fast and took the lead after Boston controlled most of the first half.

Both knew it had to change and fast.

“Yeah, I think I was the one that kind of brought the body tone down a little bit, because I made some bad turnovers there to start the third quarter, kind of got me down,” Pierce said. “So it was up to me to kind of get it back, get the team back on. That’s what I try to do, I cant have any lapses like that because it really affect the team and I realize that, so I have to do a better job in that department.”

“He started out playing great and then when I subbed him and brought him back in, I don’t know what happened. We were turning the ball over and he was struggling,” Rivers said. “It was funny, in the third quater, the only thing I told him was I don’t care that you’re not playing well in this stretch or we’re not, I just hate our body language right now. And I give Paul a lot of credit, he basically said, ‘That’s on me. That’s my fault.’

“I thought we were hanging our heads a lot in the third quarter. We were turning the ball over and we were missing shots. The end of the world is not going to happen. We just have to keep playing. I didn’t like the way we responded to that and I thought Paul did a good job in the timeout right after that of getting the guys back.”

Pierce finished with a game-high 26 points in Boston’s 94-86 win over Stephen Curry and the Warriors Friday night at TD Garden.

“It was good,” Pierce said. “You play a quality ball club who’s playoff-bound who’s very dangerous in the West, capable of beating anybody. Sometimes that first game at home feels like a road game, your body is readjusting. You know you haven’t been in this building in a couple of weeks, so sometimes its difficult. We were a little sloppy with the ball, but it’s a good win nevertheless.”

The Celtics actually went into a zone defense when Avery Bradley went out with his fifth foul with eight minutes left in the third quarter.

“I think it really bothered them,” Pierce said. “They’re a great one-on-one team who really thrives on taking you off the dribble, making an extra pass, shooting the three-ball….I think it altered their offense a little bit once we got into the zone. It was really effective, especially in the second half.”

Jeff Green took a hard spill on his left side midway through the third and when he returned, the Celtics went on a 9-0 run to pull away for good late in the third.

“He was awesome tonight,” Pierce said of Green, who finished with 18 points. “He really carried us in that fourth quarter, took it upon himself to be aggressive. You know, he’s coming into his own, after a slow start, which you can expect. Its tough when you take a year off from basketball and try to get back in the game, but I think since January he’s just been phenomenal, very consistent doing what we ask on both ends of the court, and he’s getting better and better as time goes on.”

100 mph is the new 95 mph.

Doc is such a good coach….and the players know it and respect it….shame on the fools who believe that players don’t want to come to Boston and play for the celtics and Doc….

  • Larry33

When a superstar free agent comes here to play, you’ll be right, until then, you’re wrong. They want sun and fun and glamour, not cold and snow and fat Boston girls.

This coming from someone living in their parent’s basement wondering what life is like away from a dark room typing away at sport websites.

Coming from a girl who didn’t know who the Celtics were until they won a title. Go get your pink hat on and xxxl Varitek jersey and go watch a Sox game you bandwagon broad.

      Sad but true.

Interesting, but I also think it is a common misnomer that all players would prefer to go to LA or Miami as opposed to any place else. Sure, those places may be appealing….however bottom line is players go where they are going to make money. Boston may not be as attractive in terms of glitz and weather, but if the green offer a good contract, players will come here.

Sure, not all players would, but enough would to make the team appealing. Jason Terry came here, Shaq came here, Rasheed Wallace came here….Al Jefferson said he would return, Josh Smith has said several times he would love to play in Boston, and Jared Dudley also said he’d come here. And OJ Mayo said he would, then wouldn’t, then would. And last year, David West was open to coming here. So, the perception that no one wants to come here has been proven wrong. The Celtics just have to find the guys who want to come here.

    • Larry33

All that may be true. But I wonder at times if players use the Celtics as leverage to get better deals from other teams i.e. David West. IF they get Smith and/or Jefferson, then I will be proven wrong and I hope I am, but so far the players that have signed are all at the end of the line. I’d like to see an A list player say ” you know what, I love the tradition and Doc is a great coach, i’m going to Boston ” I just dont see it with these players nowadays.

Larry33….while some of your comments are true you should try to stay positive and not attack other posters, nor put down Boston chicks. If you haven’t realized they are some of the finest in the world then sad to say that you just might be spending too much time under ground. As for signing free agents, if you build a winner, and pay them, they will come, plain and simple. GO CELTICS

I do find the idea about free agents and Boston rather interesting. While I do agree that they will come here if paid – and the Celtics have been able to lure solid free agents past their prime  – I would like to see if some of the prime free agents would come here (aka Josh Smith, no matter what you think of him, is a prime free agent). I am a firm believer that they will for the money and a chance to play for Doc (his reputation seems to have spread far and wide) as well as a team that seems to have helped their players no matter the issue.

However the Celtics in this current carnation (2003-2013) have never either had the cap space or the winning ability to lure a prime free agent. Let’s face it, who would want to be on a team that won 20 games; and its hard to sign a max free agent now. Under the 1990s ownership, which did not really care too much about the team, the attempts to lure free agents really were an attempt to keep the team afloat or, when Pitino took over, an attempt to figure out how to consistently remake a team after failing to get the number 1 pick. Under Danny, the team has tried to sell assets to get new assets to make the current team. It will be interesting to see what will happen during the next five years. I do think players will come – BUT I would like to see it in action sometime soon.

sheesh. do they always ask so many questions? I give tons of credit to real leaders for standing there and being able to deal with that aspect of their job like professionals, but this seemed like overkill. do they have a set amount of allotted time? 2 minutes of legitimate attention seems sufficient for a regular season game. now for Rondo? i say make him stand there for 20 minutes until he loses the attitude… which he won’t. he’ll just give those smarmy “i’m smarter than you” answers like he always does with that obnoxious attitude. dude’s such a baby.

Paul Pierce should never handle the basketball for long stretches of the game again.  Give him the ball on the elbow (his sweet spot) or while he is open for a 3 pointer.  He turns the ball over way too much which kills the momentum of the team.
