Kevin Durant scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while former Boston College star Reggie Jackson hit a couple of key baskets off the bench as the Thunder ended the Celtics’ five-game winning streak with a 91-79 win Sunday afternoon at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 20 points while Kevin Garnett added 10. But Garnett, who hit four of his first eight shots, missed 10 in a row at one point, including his first eight of the second half as Boston fell short in their bid to sweep the Thunder, who improved to 47-16. The biggest difference in the game came at the free throw line, as the Thunder hit 27-of-33 shots while Boston attempted just 20, making 14.

The Celtics (34-28) hung in with No. 2 seed in the West, overcoming a pair of 10-0 runs by the Thunder in the first half to trail by just five points at halftime, 50-45. After shooting 51 percent in the first half, the Celtics went ice cold in the second half, making just 10-of-40 shots in the second half. They finished shooting just 37.7 percent (29-of-77) from the field.

The Celtics turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter, holding the Thunder to just 18 points and cutting Oklahoma City’s lead to three, 68-65, heading into the fourth quarter.

But the Celtics went ice cold to start the fourth. Oklahoma City opened on a 10-2 run, highlighted by a jumper by Jackson as the shot clock expired. He changed his shot in mid-air and double-pumped to connect.

The Celtics missed 15 of their first 17 shots of the quarter while the Thunder built their biggest lead, 87-73, on a Durant baseline jumper with 3:13 left. But the Celtics responded with six straight points to get the lead down to eight with 2:20 left. After a defensive stop, the Celtics appeared to get the ball back with 1:44 left and a chance to cut the lead even more. But a replay overturned a ball out of bounds off Jason Terry and the Thunder got the ball back with a new shot clock.

The Celtics forced the Thunder to use all 24 seconds without allowing the Thunder to get a shot off. Jeff Green‘s 3-point attempted rimmed out with 59 seconds left. The Thunder got the next basket with 37.4 seconds remaining on a layup by Serge Ibaka to put Thunder up, 89-79, and ice the game.

The Celtics are off Monday before taking on the Bobcats in Charlotte on Tuesday night.

Thunderstruck???? really! held ock to 91 points. The cs couldn’t hit a shot. was it bc of ock defense? or was it to the cs not or lack of getting calls in the paint when their was contact? now on the opposite side okc, who is a good team, but got 33 foulshots and some calls were ridiculous. By the way they made 27 of them. cs’ out rebound them, ok 18 turnover to14 not bad. but would like to c less. This was a one way officiated game. anyone else see it that way?  on final thought. i kinow the c’s missed a bunch of shots, which were makable. bad shooting day. but all of bs calls changed the flow of the game. especillaly on offense

Scott your comments are like jabba jabba jabba
      But, I agree.

They gave it a good effort, but they never seemed to be into this game mentally–way, wayyy too many turnovers in the first quarter.  It’s amazing they were only down 5 at the half.  Most of their turnovers weren’t even forced by OKC, it was just poor execution.  They didn’t help themselves out at the free throw line either, and with the refs not giving the Celtics any breaks (the officiating was truly terrible in this game), I actually think it says a lot they still had a chance to win.  They need to take much better care of the basketball though, that’s the #1 priority, and luckily, it’s something they can fix.

maybe at this point Doc will give his new guys a little run in the next 3 gms vs Bobcats, Raptors, Bobcats…before facing Miami next Monday night.
“Any scoring” would have helped us today (especially with all the jumpshots missing terribly). Both DJ White & Randolph were good inside scorers before coming here this year. Wilcox played ok today (10 mins, 2pts, 2rebs) but that offensive output may be improved upon with one or both these new guys.

  • One got away

Green and KG 7-30 along with the TO and FT difference. Could have stole this game. Good defense.

Pretty uneven officiating in this one.
One a high note, Bass had a really nice game, he was hustling all over the floor.

He was a BEAST on the boards and on defense. I don’t know how many boards he ended up with but he had about 7 or 8 near misses too. Just converting on a handful more possessions like that with second chance points could have stolen this game. That was the best I’ve seen Brandon Bass play.

Overall, this game was much closer than I thought it would be. There were three things that I think stood out in this game that resulted in the Celtics loss:

    1. Turnovers. There was some really poor passing throughout the game, particularly the back pass and cross court pass. Ugly. Because of those alone, OKC should have won by 20.

    2. Getting away from going to the hoop. During the fourth quarter, the Celtics took an inordinate amount of jump shots – early on because they seemed to want to and later to catch up. Going to the basket works for them…and they should have done this more often throughout.

    3. The theory of relativity (which relates to the officials). The theory that a team is relatively better and closer to the playoffs was well at work with the officials. Granted, there were a couple of bad calls bother ways. The goaltending call was awful. Garnett’s shot that seemed to roll out look like it may have been affected by a hand catching near the net. Three different drives between the 9:00 and 6:00 mark of the fourth quarter were fouls that the Celtics didn’t get. It doesn’t take Einstein to know that the refs whistles went away for the Celtics at light speed. Too bad.

Not sure if the Green would have won this game anyway…I expected a scene much like last year’s OKC game…but this game was much better than I expected.

Ugly shooting by the Celtics but defensively they were in the same league as these contenders.
