Doc Rivers: ‘Just like we wanted Ray to stay, I know they wanted Wes to stay’ 03.13.13 at 7:34 pm ET

The shockwaves from the Wes Welker signing in Denver extended not only beyond New England but beyond the NFL.

Just ask Doc Rivers. The Celtics head coach is a close friend of Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and was the guest of the Patriots coach on Dec. 10 when the Patriots beat the Texans on Monday night football at Gillette Stadium.

So, Rivers, who grew up a Bears fan, actually felt badly for Patriots fans and acknowledged as much before the Celtics hosted Toronto Wednesday night at TD Garden, just hours after Welker’s seismic signing with the Broncos.

“Say it ain’t so, Wes,” Rivers said in opening his pre-game press availability Wednesday night.

But the most interesting part of Rivers’ reaction came later when asked if he ever talked about team building and keeping it together. Rivers compared Welker’s exit to that of Ray Allen to the Miami Heat.

“We lost Ray, it feels like, the same way that they lost Wes,” Rivers said. “We wanted him, we did everything we could, and somehow they go somewhere else.”

The similarity is striking. Allen left via free agency for Boston’s chief rival and defending champion Miami Heat. Welker is now going to the Broncos and playing with Peyton Manning, New England’s biggest rival behind the Ravens in the AFC.

“Just like we wanted Ray to stay, I know they wanted Wes to stay,” said Rivers. “It just sometimes doesn’t work out.“

The difference being, Ray left for less money. The Pats and BB chumped Wes out!

The Pats did not want WW anymore. Period.  It was not the money.  WW was the best slot receiver in the NFL, but he was a one trick pony in the offense.  Aaron, Edelman, Amendola and Woodhead will fill that void and give you more.  It seem like they will be keeping Lloyd since they have not cut him yet.  I am thinking they will get him to restructure his deal then trade in for a decent deep threat.  Lloyd and WW combined for half of Pats pass completions last year.

Sorry Doc, bad analogy.  If the Pats matched Denver, Wes would still be here.  Ray left for LESS money.

No they didn’t!!! That weak offer proves that! I hope BB know what he’s doing because I AM UNIMPRESSED!

Doc, Stick to Basketball. You don’t have a clue what you’re talking about on this one.

The people who are now criticizing the Patriots are the same one’s that blow a gasket (and rightfully so, imo) when the Red Sox bid against themselves for a player. Who’s to say that if the Pats agreed to match Denvers offer, Denver would have added more and more until the price blew up. The Patriots assign a value to a player and hold to it. They don’t put themselves at the mercy of agents and players. Something tells me at 2/12m the market for Welker was lukewarm at best amongst a lot of great football scouts and general managers. I wish him the best and don’t blame him one bit for going for the extra $$. Thanks for the gritty play while he was a Patriot.

except the Celts really wanted Ray and showed it with their offer.  Pats didn’t want Wes back, hence the cynical matching offer.  Pretty disgusting

Bottom line is Wes dropped several important passes including one that most likely would have sealed the SB last year.  Then in the AFC Championship he dropped 2 passes one that would have changed the complexion of the 2nd half.  Pats don’t seem to go above and beyond for players that cost them championships, see Asante Samuel (dropped interception in SB).  Amendola is the same as Wes was when we traded for him out of Miami.  We will see if he can stay healthy which to me is the only question.  Talent wise they are the same but Amendola is younger and more explosive.
