Report: Daniels re-signs with Celtics 07.22.10 at 10:10 pm ET
By   |  2 Comments

According to multiple reports, Marquis Daniels has agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million with the Celtics.

On Thursday night Daniels (@marquis_daniels) tweeted, “Let’s try this again #celticnation I’m happy to be back.”

Daniels averaged 5.6 points and 1.9 rebounds last season. He was sidelined for 27 games by a thumb injury and appeared in just 51 games during the regular season. Daniels also suffered a concussion during the Eastern Conference finals.

A healthy Daniels fills the Celtics need for a perimeter defender. The C’€™s were left with a hole in their second unit after Tony Allen signed with the Grizzlies and Daniels was still on the market.

In spite of his limited role on the Celtics, Daniels had expressed an interest in returning to Boston last season.

‘€œThe locker room is great, it’€™s a great atmosphere, the coaching staff, everything is good,’€ he previously told WEEI.com. ‘€œSo it’€™s something that I’€™d like to be part of. Hopefully it will work out. If not, then I have to deal with everything that happens.’€

New contract gives Robinson a new beginning 07.22.10 at 8:40 pm ET

Nate Robinson is entering his sixth season in the NBA, but in a lot of ways, his career has a new beginning.

After more than four seasons with the Knicks, and a few months with the Celtics, Robinson is returning to Boston with a two-year deal that gives him a fresh start.

‘€œFor me, I think it will be a good start for me to just come in and start from scratch,’€ he said in a conference call. ‘€œI loved my time there in Boston. The fans welcomed me with open arms, the team, coach Doc (Rivers), Danny Ainge, everybody, the whole organization, they were real good to me. I decided they’€™re a great, winning organization, a lot of history, and I think I fit in well with the guys. So I was like, why not?’€

Even though Robinson was only been traded to the Celtics in February, he is preparing for next season like a player who has been with the team for years. He immediately embraced the tradition of the organization and was struck by the Celtics relentless drive for victory.

Robinson spends his days in Seattle gyms with hometown friends including Brandon Roy, Jamal Crawford, and Aaron Brooks. They work out three times a week and play games for two. (Robinson will also throw out the first pitch at Friday’s Red Sox – Mariners game in Seattle.)

For the first time in his career, he is spending his offseason preparing to contend, not just compete.

‘€œThe main thing that stood out to me was just their will to win,’€ he said. ‘€œThey expect to win every night. I was like, ‘€˜Wow, this is awesome.’€™’€

Robinson says he never experienced such strong team chemistry on the Knicks like he did on the Celtics. It makes his return that much sweeter knowing that Doc Rivers, the coach who expressed confidence in him when he wasn’€™t seeing major minutes, will be back on the sidelines and the core of the team is still in tact. Catching up with Glen Davis 07.16.10 at 12:53 am ET
By   |  2 Comments

LAS VEGAS — WEEI.com caught up with Glen Davis while he is training with Joe Abunassar at Impact Basketball in Las Vegas. He talked about the Celtics‘ upcoming season, free agent moves, and a new trio in South Beach.

Optimistic Outlook: ‘€œI think we’€™re going to do well [next season]. We have a lot of pieces back. With Ray Allen being back, I’€™m really happy he came back. I’€™m also happy that Paul [Pierce] came back. We have KG and then we just added Jermaine O’€™Neal. There’€™s a lot of other pieces that we need to put together, but I think Danny [Ainge] and the front office are going to make sure we have the team, the players, and it’€™s all about just gelling together and making sure it happens.’€

‘€œFamily’€ Reunion: ‘€œIt was great. To see [Doc Rivers, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen] come back means a lot. Especially what it means to them, and that’€™s what it’€™s all about. We’€™re family. Everybody knows that. We’€™ve been together, we’€™ve been through the ups and downs. We’€™ve been through the trenches and we’€™ve just got to make sure we do what we have to do.’€

Shrek and Donkey 2.0? ‘€œI love Nate [Robinson]. He brings a whole realm to the team that most players can’€™t bring. I just hope that he finds a place to play, and if it’€™s not with us, that [stinks], but if it’€™s with us that’€™s great. I would love to play with Nate.’€

A Big Help: ‘€œI’€™ve known Jermaine [O’€™Neal] since I was in college. He’€™s a great player. He’€™s done a lot of things in the NBA, he’€™s an All-Star-caliber player, he’€™s been on that level before. He’€™s a great post up guy. You can always learn something from him, so I’€™m glad he’€™s on our team and he can definitely help us.’€

No Sweating the Heat: ‘€œThey have a Big Three, we have a Big Three. We have players that are capable of making big shots and playing big minutes; they have players that are capable of doing all that. So I’€™m not really worried about the Miami Heat. They still have to put the team together and make it gel. And that’€™s what it’€™s all about — chemistry — and it takes more than three players to win a championship. And everybody knows that. So there’€™s no worrying. We’€™re just ready to play.’€

T. Allen agrees to sign with Grizzlies 07.11.10 at 4:33 pm ET
By   |  4 Comments

WEEI.com has confirmed with a source that Tony Allen has agreed to a multi-year deal with the Grizzlies. The Memphis Commercial Appeal first reported the agreement.

Allen, an unrestricted free agent, has spent his entire career with the Celtics since being drafted in 2004. He excelled this postseason as a defensive stopper and played a critical role in containing Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade.

Allen told WEEI.com during the playoffs that he would like to return to the Celtics next season … and beyond.

‘€œI am a Celtic,’€ he said. ‘€œI love being a Celtic. It’€™d mean everything in the world [return next season].’€

He added, ‘€œI mean, things happen but I feel like I’€™m going to be a Celtic for life.’€

Should Allen sign elsewhere, his departure would leave a huge gap in the Celtics second unit as the organization looks to rebuild its bench this summer.

Janning receives training camp invite 07.10.10 at 8:46 pm ET

LAS VEGAS — After a brief but impressive stint with the Celtics at Orlando Summer League, Matt Janning has received an invite to be part of their training camp roster this fall, he told WEEI.com.

‘€œThey’€™ve invited me,’€ he said. ‘€œI’€™ve got to sit down and kind of think about what’€™s the best opportunity for me.’€

Janning, a guard, averaged 11.5 points and shot 9-for-18 in just two games for the Celtics. Although Danny Ainge asked him to stay with the team for the duration of the week, Janning had to leave Orlando early to fulfill a previous commitment with the Suns at the Las Vegas Summer League.

Even though he will consider all of his options this summer, the chance to play for the Celtics is special to the Northeastern alum.

‘€œA lot of my friends are like, ‘€˜You’€™re playing with the Celtics, that’€™s awesome.’€™ And it really is,’€ he said. ‘€œI’€™ve been in Boston the last four years, a little more than that now, watched games down at the Garden, and I’€™ve seen those guys play, so it’€™s real nice knowing that I’€™m close to getting a chance to be part of all that.”

Allen: ‘There’s no other place I wanted to be’ 07.07.10 at 11:21 pm ET

Ray Allen reached a two-year agreement with the Celtics and is looking forward to continuing his career in Boston.

“I’m happy to be returning as a Celtic,” he told WEEI.com via text message. “There’s no other place I wanted to be.”

According to a source familiar with the negotiations, WEEI.com confirmed the deal is worth $10 million annually. The second year is a player option.

Allen, who turns 35 this month, made it clear following the NBA finals that he would like to return to Boston —  ‘€œI’€™ll deal with that when the time comes, but it’€™s obvious that I don’€™t want to be anywhere else,’€ he said after Game 7. He garnered attention from around the league, however, once he hit the free agent market. According to one report, LeBron James contacted Allen about joining him, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade on a “Dream Team.”

Allen’s return to the Celtics keeps the “Big Three” intact. Paul Pierce agreed to a four-year deal last week and Kevin Garnett has two years left on his contract.

Allen averaged just over 16 points during last season and the playoffs. He set an NBA finals record by hitting eight 3-pointers against the Lakers. Allen will be entering his 15th season in the league and doesn’t expect to slow down any time soon.

‘€œI believe I’€™m so far ahead of the game that I’€™m able to play longer,” he told WEEI.com during the regular season. “People look at basic standards of guys my age at 34, like some guys at 34, there’€™s no way they could play basketball right now. And I’€™m thinking at my age now, I can go even a few more years doing what I’€™m doing the way I’€™m doing it because for me, it’€™s not rocket science.”
