|Report: Rubio to sign with Barcelona||08.26.09 at 11:50 am ET|
The DKV Joventut guard will sign a six-year contract with FC Barcelona, according to Marca.com (via HoopsHype). According to the report, Rubio’s buyout to play for Regal Barcelona will be a record-breaking 3.7 million euros, the largest in European basketball history.
This doesn’t mean Rubio will spend his entire career in Europe. The report notes that his contract will also have an opt-out clause which would allow him to leave for the NBA. The buyout would decrease after every season and would reportedly be low enough for Rubio to enter the pros in the Summer of 2011.
Rubio garnered attention as one of the most highly touted players in this year’s draft. However the complications of his buyout and questions surrounding his NBA-readiness raised eyebrows around the league.
“I don’t see Rubio being that dynamic player now,” Celtics GM Danny Ainge said on WEEI’s Dennis & Callahan Show earlier this summer. “I think he’s got a lot of potential. He’s a very flashy player. He has a great mind for the game, and he’s a terrific passer. I don’t see him, just physically, and because he doesn’t shoot the ball very well, I don’t see him having an impact as a rookie. I think he’s more of a project ‘ a build-around franchise point guard ‘ so I would put him down there below those other guys.”
Rubio turns 19 in October.
UPDATE: The Timberwolves issued the following statement from General Manager David Kahn on their site: “Based on the information I have attained today, no team in any league has reached a deal with DKV Joventut concerning Ricky’s buyout, which must be accomplished before Ricky is released from his contract with DKV Joventut.”

|Celtics spend their summer in the community||08.24.09 at 11:35 pm ET|
This summer the Celtics organization has spent countless hours improving its team for the upcoming NBA season. Meanwhile many of its players have dedicated their time to improving the Boston community.
Last week Bill Walker spent the afternoon at the Reebok Youth Basketball Camp, held at Basketball City in Boston, to talk about the importance of hard work on and off the court. Walker served as spokesperson for the six-week camp, which was also held at the Celtics training facility in Waltham and their 2008 training camp facility at Salve Regina University.
This month Eddie House and Celtics legend Cedric Maxwell dedicated a renovated basketball court to the Carter family of Waltham, winners of the RE/MAX of New England Home Court Program contest. The family also received a Celtics-themed bedroom makeover. House and Maxwell conducted a free basketball clinic for 100 children at the Waltham Boys & Girls Club following the dedication.
Walker, Lester Hudson, and J.R. Giddens teamed up with a group of 20 volunteers to help 400 families in need at the Feed the Children Event in Mattapan earlier this month. Together they handed out $45,000 worth of non-perishable food items and personal items at the Mildred Avenue School and Community Center. Walker and Hudson also signed autographs and took photos with the families.
Brian Scalabrine and Walker toured Washington D.C. in June with a group of students from the Harbor Middle School in Dorchester, winners of the tenth annual ASSISTS Community Service Contest. Contest creators Southwest Airlines and the Celtics flew the students for the field trip, where they toured other monuments and attractions in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area.

|Ray Ray to Stay?||08.23.09 at 9:16 pm ET|
Ray Allen’s contract expires after the upcoming season but the Boston Globe has reported there is reason to wonder if he plans on staying in Boston a little while longer. According to Peter May, the buzz stems from Wellesley, where Allen lives during the season. Word around town is that Allen’s daughter Tierra, who lives with her mother in South Carolina, may be moving in with her father … and the move could be soon. The reason is Allen’s daughter plays basketball and volleyball, which begins this week.
May pointed out: ‘She would be a junior at Wellesley High (and why would she come if dad wasn’t planning on playing beyond this year? Just an observation). Needless to say, the Wellesley basketball community is watching all this with great interest. With volleyball starting this week, one would think something has to break pretty soon.’
May also noted Celtics president Danny Ainge has reported there have not been any serious talks regarding a contract extension. Allen, 34, will earn $19.8 million in the final season of his deal.

Brookline, MA native and former University of Connecticut forward Jeff Adrien has signed with Leche Rio Breogan in Lugo, Spain, according to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports.
