Cedric Maxwell on D&C: Doc Rivers must now regret leaving Celtics 04.29.14 at 11:34 am ET
By   |  Comments Off

Appearing on the Dennis & Callahan Show Tuesday, Celtics radio broadcaster, and former Clipper, Cedric Maxwell responded, “Yeah,” when asked if he thought Clippers coach Doc Rivers now regretted leaving the Celtics after the recent controversy surrounding owner Donald Sterling.

“I don’t think anyone could foresee this coming,” Maxwell said. “I don’t think anybody could see this coming with any owner in the NBA. If you know that, if you knew that before you left here, you were a fool to leave. And I know Doc Rivers is not foolish.”

Maxwell noted that when he played for the Clippers, no mention was made of the owner’s rumored racism, citing the infancy of Sterling’s NBA tenure at that point. “Nobody was talking at that point,” the former Celtic said.

Maxwell said he believes action has to be taken in regards to Sterling’s involvement with the Clippers.

“Most people that I know, most players that I’ve talked to, most people of color and even most people not of color, they want him out of the game,” he said. “Even then he still owns the team. There will still be a stigma associated to it. Until he’s out of that arena, out of basketball, I don’t know about anything that will appease the general public.”

Maxwell did take issue with how the audio was attained, while making it clear the message was inexcusable. “I have a problem with (the taping) and I have a problem with what was said,” he said, adding, “He’s not the only owner who’s ever said anything about a black player. It’s just the fact that the curtain was pulled back because it was a taped conversation.”

Grande & Max to host weekly ‘Celtics Summer Cooler’ 06.05.13 at 1:27 pm ET
By   |  Comments Off

Celtics radio announcers Sean Grande and Cedric Maxwell will be hosting a weekly radio show on Saturdays from 1-3 p.m. on the WEEI network called “Celtics Summer Cooler.”

The first edition will air this weekend, and the show will run through Sept. 28, leading up to training camp. Grande and Max have called more than 1,200 games since teaming up for Celtics radio on WEEI in 2001, including the 2008 title. The two expect to have C’s front office personnel, players, beat writers and columnists on the show.

‘€œThis is going to be the most interesting offseason for the Celtics since 2007 when [president of basketball operations] Danny [Ainge] pulled off the big trades for KG [Kevin Garnett] and Ray Allen,’€ said Jason Wolfe, VP of Programming and Operations for WEEI. “Celtic fans deserve a show that will be devoted to the team’€™s efforts this summer, and no one knows the strategy better than Grande and Max.”

Cedric Maxwell: Celtics placed $10 bounties in NBA 03.06.12 at 12:37 pm ET
By   |  8 Comments

During a discussion about the recent report that coaches for the New Orleans Saints were offering rewards between $1,000 and $1,500 for injuring opposing players, former Celtics star Cedric Maxwell claimed the NFL isn’t the only league that’s doled out bounties.

‘€œWe did it in the NBA,” Maxwell told Steve Burton on Sunday night. “We had a guy, Len Elmore, who used to love to take charges. He’€™s an analyst right now for CBS. You might want to hear this Len. We had a bounty on you. If you stepped on his chest, you got paid.’€

Admittedly, the stakes were much different from the allegations against the Saints. The current C’s radio analyst said he got $10 from a pool gathered by the players each time he put an imprint of his size 15 shoe on Elmore’s chest, but there was neither an intent nor reward for inflicting injury.

‘€œEvery time he tried to take a charge and you stepped on him, you got paid,” added Maxwell. “What are they going to do, come back and fine me now?’€

Maxwell responds to Rondo rumor 03.01.09 at 4:45 pm ET

The Internet has been buzzing with rumors of a heated conversation between Rajon Rondo and Boston Celtics radio broadcaster Cedric Maxwell. According to reports, Rondo shot harsh words at Maxwell in the Celtics locker room following Friday’s game against the Indiana Pacers. Maxwell cleared the air with WEEI.com during halftime of Sunday afternoon’s game against the Detroit Pistons.

“Me and Rondo were talking about a card game where he and I had played,” he said. “That’s what we were talking about and we were poking fun at each other. It wasn’t any argument that we had at all.”

Maxwell told Rondo about the rumors. Both he and the Celtics point guard laughed at the reality of their conversation.

“The words were, ‘You played the wrong card the other day when we were playing in the card game,'” Maxwell said. “That’s what that was.”
