J.R. Smith compares Avery Bradley to Kobe Bryant, and not in a good way 04.20.15 at 2:58 pm ET
By   |  Comments Off

Granted, Sunday’s game between the Cavaliers and Celtics was questionably officiated, but J.R. Smith hardly has a case he didn’t deserve all four of his fouls — and maybe even more. But that didn’t stop the former NBA Sixth Man of the Year from complaining.

So, apparently Smith thinks Avery Bradley is getting superstar treatment, which is … interesting … since the Celtics guard attempted all of zero free throws, and Smith somehow still managed to complain after trucking Kelly Olynyk like a linebacker.

Lakers coach Byron Scott ‘disappointed’ with players’ behavior after win over Celtics 02.25.15 at 9:46 am ET
By   |  Comments Off

On Sunday the Lakers were able to edge the Celtics in overtime, earning just their 14th win of the season. After scoring 25 points in the victory, Jeremy Lin was being interviewed before teammates Nick Young, Jordan Hill and Carlos Boozer€”€” crashed in and began celebrating excitedly.

Kobe Bryant, who has been out with injury, didn’t see the footage until Jimmy Kimmel showed it to him on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (skip to 1:30 mark in video above). When he saw it, Bryant sat in his chair glaring, but without saying a word.

And Bryant wasn’t the only one to react this way. Lakers coach Byron Scott said he was “angry” and “very disappointed” in his players’ behavior.

“Kobe’s reaction was pretty much my reaction when I was watching it,” Scott said to ESPN’s Baxter Holmes after Tuesday’s practice. “I was just shaking my head like, ‘I can’t believe this.’ ”

He also addressed the incident with his players and told them he was disappointed, but he didn’t discipline any of them as he believes “the matter is resolved” after just talking to them.

“That’s not us as Lakers,” Scott said. “That’s not how we act. It showed a lack of professionalism.”

Celtics captain Rajon Rondo and Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, ‘just two [expletives] having breakfast’ 12.06.14 at 2:37 am ET

As Lakers coach Byron Scott gritted his teeth through another postgame press conference, this time after a 113-96 loss to their equally struggling rivals, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge stopped to ask, “Want to get some breakfast?”

He was joking, of course, about Rajon Rondo and Kobe Bryant sharing a morning meal at The Paramount in Boston on Thursday, a concept that might have seemed absurd when Ainge’s Celtics and Scott’s Lakers split four straight trips to the NBA Finals from 1984-87.

It’s a different NBA landscape nowadays — what with AAU, shared agents and summer workouts making bros out of foes more than ever before — and it’s a different rivalry.

“We’€™ve had our battles, but it doesn’€™t carry over,” Bryant said after his team fell to 5-15 on the season. “The stone-throwing and all that doesn’€™t carry over to these types of games.”

Report: Celtics, Lakers have had Rajon Rondo trade talks in the past 12.05.14 at 3:16 pm ET
By   |  Comments Off

As most know by now, Kobe Bryant and Rajon Rondo shared breakfast together in Boston on Thursday, but as Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported, there was nothing to the breakfast — it had actually been planned for weeks.

That doesn’t mean there haven’t been any trade conversations between the two legendary franchises recently, though.

According to one of Shelburne’s sources, the Celtics and Lakers did briefly discuss a Rondo deal a few months ago, but talks have since ended. The Lakers don’t have much to offer, and are not keen on including a first-round pick in a deal — something Danny Ainge would require at least one of one of in order to ship Rondo out. Although the odds of Rondo being traded are slim, a deal along the lines of a first-round pick, rookie Julius Randle (who is out for the year with a broken leg), and an expiring contract would be something Ainge would at least be forced to ponder.

But even at season’s end, assuming Rondo has not been dealt, it’s been no secret that the Lakers plan to pursue the crafty point guard in free agency. Rondo has long been one of Bryant’s favorite players.

However, Thursday’s hangout session had nothing to do with Rondo giving up Boston for Los Angeles. “It was a basketball geek conversation,” Bryant said to reporters earlier on Friday.

And as for Kobe’s thoughts on the breakfast? “It was delicious,” he said.

With the Lakers in town for Friday night’s game against the Celtics, Rajon Rondo and Kobe Bryant were spotted having breakfast together earlier on Thursday.

With Rondo set to become a free agent following this season, could Bryant be doing some recruiting?

Report: Lakers to target Rajon Rondo in free agency 11.05.14 at 4:42 pm ET
By   |  Comments Off

Multiple NBA executives believe the Lakers will target Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo in free agency this summer, according to SI.com’s Chris Mannix.

Rondo’s contract expires at the end of the season and he has publicly stated his desire to test the market while maintaining Boston is his top choice. The four-time All-Star doesn’t like change and the Celtics also can offer more money and one more year than any other team — all of which points toward Rondo staying in green.

However, the Celtics drafted a point guard with the No. 6 overall pick and are years from contending in the Eastern Conference, making the decision to sign Rondo to a max contract a difficult one, even if he appears healthy.

Enter the Lakers. The C’s rivals will have the cap space to offer Rondo significant money when Steve Nash and Jeremy Lin come off the books this summer and the possibility of competing for a playoff spot next season alongside Kobe Bryant — an unabashed fan of the Celtics star — could be an intriguing possibility for Rondo come July, particularly if Mitch Kupchak lures other pieces to L.A.

However, Rondo can see the Lakers’ long-term prospects just as well as everybody else in basketball circles and the outlook in Boston seems rosier. He knows what becomes of aging legends on proud franchises. After all, the article in which Mannix cites front office sources focuses instead on the potential of the Lakers trading Bryant.

Take a deep breath, Celtics fans. This isn’t Rondo’s first rumored departure from Boston, and it won’t be the last.

NBA power and sour rankings: Top 5, bottom 5 at 10:13 am ET
By   |  Comments Off

In the NBA, the worst place to be is the middle of the pack. If you are not contending for a championship or tanking, in my mind, you are not relevant. Because of this, each week I will rank the top five and bottom five teams in the league. The rankings are based entirely on my own observations and opinions, so please feel free to call me names in the comments section.

FIVE BEST

1. Warriors (3-0)

Klay Thompson continues to score on and off the court. He dropped 41 points on the Lakers, signed a four-year max contract extension and, as recently reported, started dating Instagram celebrity Hannah Stocking. Personally, I would be more impressed if it was revealed Thompson was dating #AlexFromTarget. That dude got over 500,000 Twitter followers in about three days, which is damn impressive.

2. Grizzlies (4-0)

The Grizzlies are all about attitude, and it shows on the defensive end of the floor. They beat the Hornets 71-69 then held the Brow and the Pelicans to only 81 points. The Mike Conley injury is cause for concern, but the video of Tony Allen randomly smacking a cameraman is hilarious.

3. Spurs (1-1)

Even though they haven’t been spectacular during their first two games, the Spurs still are the reigning champs. Interesting storyline to pay attention to. The Spurs did not sign Kawhi Leonard to an extension before the deadline on Friday, allowing him to become restricted free agent at the end of the season. If I am Danny Ainge, I am offering Sugar K Leonard anything up to and including my daughter’s hand in marriage to get him to sign in Boston. Although there is little chance Pop and the Spurs let him go, a man can dream.
