Report: Moore to sign with Golden State Warriors 08.31.09 at 2:41 pm ET
By   |  2 Comments

Former Celtic and free agent center Mikki Moore has agreed to a one-year contract with the Golden State Warriors, according to ESPN.com. Marc Stein reported the deal is worth the veteran minimum one-year, $1.3 million. Moore indicated to WEEI.com at the end of last season that he wanted to return to Boston and hoped to work out with the team during the summer. However after struggling to click with the Celtics system and averaging less than two points and two rebounds during the playoffs, he is returning to California where he had played the previous two season with the Sacramento Kings.

If someone had told Mikki Moore in February that three members of the Sacramento Kings would face each other in the first round of the playoffs, he never would have believed them.

“[It would have taken] a sign from God [to convince me],” Moore laughed prior to Game One of the Celtics-Bulls series. “No, all of us knew that our careers weren’t going to end in Sac, but we didn’t know it was going to happen this fast. But by the blessings of God, we got out of there. ”

The Kings were 11-44 and on a six-game losing streak when Moore was waived on February 19, setting him free to sign with the Boston Celtics. Just a day earlier, they had traded Brad Miller and John Salmons to the Chicago Bulls. The Kings finished the season 17-65 while the trio are continuing theirs in the playoffs.

“It’s a crazy league and things work out crazy sometimes,” said Salmons. ” I’m happy for Mikki that he landed on his feet. He was in a tough situation in Sac from the beginning of the year and being on a good team now, he’s got a great opportunity.”

Moore is happy for his former teammates, too. That is, off the court.

“I’m happy for both him and Brad, just to be able to have another chance to be successful, for them to be able to redeem themselves after another bad season in Sac,” he said. “Those are my brothers and everything, but once the ball’s up in the air, I can’t think of that.”

KG concern: He’s the center of everything 03.31.09 at 2:52 pm ET

He hasn’t been that big a player since coming to the Celtics in February but Mikki Moore spoke volumes on Tuesday when he spoke about the news that the team is shutting down Kevin Garnett for the time being with continuing right knee soreness.

“It’s a big adjustment,” said Moore, who will pick up the slack along with Glen Davis. “He’s the center of everything. He’s the vocal point of our defense and he enthuses guys to come out and play hard. We’re going to miss his presence out on the floor but he’s always in the locker room or on the sideline out there talking to us. We’ll be alright.”

Coach Doc Rivers is hopeful that Moore, Davis and Bill Walker can step into line of fire and help while KG gets his rest.

“He’s been terrific,” Rivers said of Davis. “Mikki has a big game the other night as well. Maybe that’s the silver lining, that Mikki and Big Baby are playing more. Steph is getting more minutes due to the fact that we just don’t have enough bodies and Billy Walker is playing more so maybe that is a silver lining.”

As for others who just became more important, Rivers knows the burden falls to Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.

“We’re not going to play them more minutes but clearly there’s more pressure on them,” Rivers said. “I understand that. That may be a reason to cut their minutes a little bit as well. Bottom line is we’re going to be healthy when playoffs start and we’re going to do whatever we can to have the legs.”

Then there were the following words from Kendrick Perkins.

“We have to do it as a team,” Perkins said. “For sure, I have to do a better job of communicating on the floor and talking the defense out.”

Perkins can read the writing on the wall about the team’s chances if KG isn’t fully recovered.

“There’s always concern,” Perkins said. “A guy that has a month off from rest, comes back and he’s still not fully recovered. It’s still kind of scary. But then again, you’re dealing with a warrior, so he’ll find a way to get back.

“When he was out there, he wasn’t 100 percent, you could tell. The biggest thing is, we’ve got two-to-three weeks before the playoffs and we just want Kevin to be healthy, get treatment, messages and go from there,” Perkins added.

Too many whistles while he works 03.18.09 at 11:21 pm ET

‘€œFoul on number seven, Mikki Moore.’€

Those words have become all too familiar since Moore joined the Boston Celtics in February.

Moore has fouled out of the last two games, including Wednesday night’s overtime win against the Miami Heat. (He was gone after playing less than 17 minutes.) Over the last five games, he has been whistled for a league-leading total of 26 personal fouls. (Recap here)

‘€œI’m playing aggressive, trying to do the right thing, and most of my calls are just touch fouls,’€  Moore said after the game.  ‘€œThat’s why I’m frustrated. But a foul is a foul. I have to make my fouls count.’€

Moore explains there is a difference between a good foul and a bad foul. He should know. He led the NBA with 310 personal fouls during the 2008 season.

‘€œA bad foul is when it goes negative to the team, when it’s a turnover,’€ he said. ‘€œLike if it’s an offensive foul or if I try to come off somebody’s back and get an offensive rebound. That’s a real bad foul. And if it’s low on the shot clock and I foul a jumpshooter, that’s a bad foul. But if it’s just a hustling foul or I’m going for a loose ball, I don’t think that’s a bad foul.’€

Moore admits that part of his foul trouble has come with learning a new system. He is anxious to get adjusted, but knows he has to be patient.

‘€œI’ve got to stop trying so hard,’€ he said. ‘€œKG told me tonight, ‘Just relax and play, man. Stop trying to do everything.’ That’s what I’ve got to start doing.’€

Garnett’s advice was echoed by head coach Doc Rivers.

Said Moore, ‘€œHe said, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day so you’ve got to keep working hard.”€

Mikki Moore: 4 fouls in 8 minutes

Glen Davis: 4 fouls in 14 minutes

Kendrick Perkins: 3 fouls in 17 minutes

At the start of the second quarter … Magic 22, Celtics 15

– The Magic have scored 16 of their first 22 points in the paint. They’ve done more damage in the lane than the Celtics have done on the floor, and Howard has only played six minutes.

– This could be a big game for Gabe Pruitt. With only Marbury ahead of him at the PG, Pruitt has his first shot in a while to prove himself.  He has not played since February 25 against the Los Angeles Clippers. That night he was arrested for suspicion of DUI and served a team-imposed two-game suspension.

– Both teams are going heavy on the bigs. The Celtics have Kendrick Perkins and Mikki Moore going up against Dwight Howard and Marcin Gortat.

– The Celtics have scored just two points in four minutes. And the faint boos have already begun.

– There have been 18 fouls called in the first 18 minutes of the game.

– Howard’s on the bench with three personal fouls. Now is the time for the Celtics to do some damage at the basket. The Cs also have an advantage with J.J. Redick guarding Ray Allen. Redick is not known for his defense.

– The Magic’s deal for Rafer Alston did not get much buzz at the trade deadline but this acquisition is a difference maker in this game. Alston brings quickness to the Magic that the Celtics are having trouble stopping without Rajon Rondo.

– Pierce’s dunk past Pietrus and Battie has the crowd on their feet. The harsh reality is, the Celtics are still down by nearly 20.

- At the half … Magic 51, Celtics 33

At the start of the second quarter … Celtics 21, Cavaliers 19

– The Garden kicked off the second quarter with a trivia contest for playoff tickets, hosted by Greg Dickerson. The contest pitted a Celtics and Cavs fan against one another. Despite being spoon-fed the correct answers, the Celtics fans still got the first question wrong. Needless to say he was booed.

– On the court: Celtics – Powe/Moore/Marbury/Pierce/House … Cavs – Gibson/Williams/Szczerbiak/Hickson/Smith

– It’ll be interesting to see how the Celtics bigs handle Joe Smith and J.J. Hickson. Smith has a mid-range jumper that can pull defenders out of the paint. The rookie Hickson was working on turn-around bank shots before the game.

Mikki Moore had his first crowd-rousing moment at the Garden when he dunked through a handful of Cavs off of a Marbury pass.

– At the timeout: Celtics Karaoke courtesy of Big Baby, Ray Allen, and Leon Powe. Davis busted out into a solo performance that sounded like Simon Cowell’s worst nightmare.

– Rondo was welcomed back into the game with a standing ovation. The Cavs have most of their starters back in the game looking for an offensive spark. So far they have come up cold in the second quarter. The Celtics have all five starters in the game.

– LeBron’s posing after every shot like it’s a game winner. He’s shooting 2-for-7.

Mo Williams has the Cavs back in this game with eight quick points. At the half … Cetlics 45, Cavs 43
