Celtics announce Robinson signing 07.19.10 at 1:51 pm ET
By   |  Comments Off

The Celtics announced the signing of Nate Robinson on Monday. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 10.1 points, 2.9 assists and 39 percent shooting from 3-point range last season between the Knicks and Celtics.

“It’s great to have Nate back, and we think that he can contribute more significantly this upcoming season after a full training camp with the team,” Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said in a statement. “He helped us win some crucial playoff games this past postseason, and we believe that we will see great things from him this coming season.”

What Nate Robinson’s return means for the Celtics 07.16.10 at 2:02 pm ET
By   |  7 Comments

As late as May 27, the notion that Nate Robinson would return to the Celtics seemed far-fetched. Danny Ainge’s trade deadline acquisition had fallen so far out of the rotation he was spending more time with Marquis Daniels on the bench than with Paul Pierce or Ray Allen on the court.

But then on the night of May 28, Rajon Rondo went down hard on the floor in Game 6 of the conference finals against the Magic and all of Celtics fandom held its breath. Enter Nate Robinson.

In a little over eight minutes Robinson scored 13 points and the Celtics were on their way to averting disaster and en route to the NBA finals. The X-factor had finally arrived.

“I told him I loved him, and I told him at some point this was going to happen,” Doc Rivers said after Game 6. “It was all up to him to stay engaged, and he did. I get no credit for this. Nate Robinson stayed focused in 30-straight whatever games without playing. To me that’€™s more important than anything he’€™s done tonight.”

Once Robinson delivered on the court, Rivers kept him in the lineup and he provided valuable backup assistance to Rondo against the Lakers. Still, while Robinson had finally found a niche with the 2010 Celtics, there was some debate as to whether he would still fit with the team going forward.

Then Tony Allen spurned the Celtics to sign with the Grizzlies and re-signing Robinson became a higher priority. To be sure Robinson and T.A. have very little in common as players, but as Ainge looks to fill out the bench with only the veteran minimum to offer, quality players at any position have become a premium.

Now Robinson is back in the fold and that’s good news for the Celtics. Here’s what he has to offer. Read the rest of this entry »

Catching up with Glen Davis at 12:53 am ET
By   |  2 Comments

LAS VEGAS — WEEI.com caught up with Glen Davis while he is training with Joe Abunassar at Impact Basketball in Las Vegas. He talked about the Celtics‘ upcoming season, free agent moves, and a new trio in South Beach.

Optimistic Outlook: ‘€œI think we’€™re going to do well [next season]. We have a lot of pieces back. With Ray Allen being back, I’€™m really happy he came back. I’€™m also happy that Paul [Pierce] came back. We have KG and then we just added Jermaine O’€™Neal. There’€™s a lot of other pieces that we need to put together, but I think Danny [Ainge] and the front office are going to make sure we have the team, the players, and it’€™s all about just gelling together and making sure it happens.’€

‘€œFamily’€ Reunion: ‘€œIt was great. To see [Doc Rivers, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen] come back means a lot. Especially what it means to them, and that’€™s what it’€™s all about. We’€™re family. Everybody knows that. We’€™ve been together, we’€™ve been through the ups and downs. We’€™ve been through the trenches and we’€™ve just got to make sure we do what we have to do.’€

Shrek and Donkey 2.0? ‘€œI love Nate [Robinson]. He brings a whole realm to the team that most players can’€™t bring. I just hope that he finds a place to play, and if it’€™s not with us, that [stinks], but if it’€™s with us that’€™s great. I would love to play with Nate.’€

A Big Help: ‘€œI’€™ve known Jermaine [O'€™Neal] since I was in college. He’€™s a great player. He’€™s done a lot of things in the NBA, he’€™s an All-Star-caliber player, he’€™s been on that level before. He’€™s a great post up guy. You can always learn something from him, so I’€™m glad he’€™s on our team and he can definitely help us.’€

No Sweating the Heat: ‘€œThey have a Big Three, we have a Big Three. We have players that are capable of making big shots and playing big minutes; they have players that are capable of doing all that. So I’€™m not really worried about the Miami Heat. They still have to put the team together and make it gel. And that’€™s what it’€™s all about — chemistry — and it takes more than three players to win a championship. And everybody knows that. So there’€™s no worrying. We’€™re just ready to play.’€

Morrow off table after sign-and-trade with Nets 07.14.10 at 9:23 am ET
By   |  2 Comments

You can erase another name off the Celtics‘ list of free agent targets this offseason after Anthony Morrow agreed to a sign-and-trade deal that would send him from the Warriors to the Nets for New Jersey’s second-round pick in 2011. Earlier this month, reports had emerged that the C’s were looking at adding Morrow as a sharpshooter off the bench. He led the NBA in 3-point field goal percentage as a rookie in 2008-09 at 46.7 percent.

Morrow, who signed as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech in 2008, averaged 13.0 points per game for Golden State last season, up from his 10.1 the season before. Instead of Morrow, the Celtics may have to get their shooting off the bench from old friend Nate Robinson as they reportedly are closing in on a deal to bring him back to Boston.

Odom: ‘We have quickness and size’ to cover C’s 06.12.10 at 11:16 pm ET
By   |  Comments Off

The Boston Celtics are not the Phoenix Suns. Just ask Lamar Odom and he’ll tell you as much.

The Celtics do not get up and down the court like the Suns. They do have Rajon Rondo but he is a far cry from the scoring threat that is Steve Nash.

The Celtics do have Kevin Garnett but the they don’t use him like the Suns used Amar’e Stoudamire on the pick and roll.

And the Celtics don’t score between 110 and 120 points in every playoff game like the Suns.

In other words, Odom, despite Thursday’s loss in Game 4 at TD Garden, still likes his team’s chances for being able to cover everything the Celtics could throw at them.

“We have the quickness and the size to defend this team,” Odom said. “If we communicate, we’ll be alright. It wasn’t like they scored 125 points or anything like that.”

Time will tell if those words are enough to bring out more masks or spark more chants directed at his wife Khloe Kardashian.

Odom can’t control that but he, like Bynum before him, said the Lakers need to control Glen Davis and Nate Robinson better. The pair, before their Shrek and Donkey routine after Game 4, combined to score 30 points off the bench.

“Even with Glen Davis getting going and a couple of their other guys getting going, it wasn’t a barn-burner for them offensively,” Odom said.
